  1. Marvel gets it - superhero movies have to be fun. They can only be serious and dramatic if you have brilliant storytelling. Action and laughs are the real money makers. It's what I'm hoping Fox realizes soon with X-men.
  2. This is incredibly unfair to Kubel.
  3. We are gonna find out real soon about that last part. I get the feeling the "negatives" are far more inclined to be effusive with their praise than you will ever find Ryans defenders be willing to assign criticism. Lots of people on the record that it will be "on Ryan".....we will see how true to their word they are. I Would love to do nothing but shout the praises of Ryan this offseason. HE most definitely has the resources to do it.
  4. Nice to see that from May.
  5. I heard they have to wait 2 weeks for swelling to go down to know more about surgery needs. I don't know if that's true.
  6. And if he doesn't sign them....then all backdoors are closed? It will be fully on him for not doing it? I guess I'm not so optimistic that the excuses will end simply because of a couple of mid-20s IFAs.
  7. Unfortunately, if the Twins don't make any signings it's backdoors like this that allow people to continue to assert that we "don't know" what Ryan would do or that the situation wsan't right, or whatever. There is a never ending supply of weak supports people can concoct. The problem is that the much stronger evidence contradicts them, unfortunately they continue to put the burden of proving the future on other people and asserting that their guess is just as good as anyone else. When, in fact, it isn't - even if it comes true in the future.
  8. The beauty of hope, no? You can always get an amazing surprise!
  9. Absolutely, the degree of likelihood is relatively close. Especially for mid market teams. They knew they'd have a new ballpark and the revenues to go with it. You could argue they were choosing between Mauer and Santana, but the truth is Ryan bungled Santana any way you cut it. So we have seen how he handles top flight pitching that met every box on the checklist for "shell out big cash". And he still didn't do it. No, you didn't, but then you go on to claim no "true evidence". Well, sure. But if I asked you what genre Kanye's next number 1 track will be in and you said "Rap" and I said "Blue Grass" - you think those guesses are on equally footing? You can spin it however you'd like, the truth is that there is far more evidence (some that is not even Twins specific like the difficulty of bidding against many other teams) to the contrary of your position. That, by it's very nature, makes it a more well-grounded guess. But, as with any guess, you could be wrong and Kanye might be blowing into a jug and playing the fiddle on his next album. It's just far less likely. Ditto the situation here, at least until some direct evidence to support you starts to shine through.
  10. At this point, the only reasonable assumption is we won't sign these guys. Because evidence of the teams tendencies, the odds against you just based on the number of teams bidding, teams poor record, and the GMs stated thoughts on long term deals for pitching all weigh HEAVILY against any evidence to the contrary. Ryan had a chance years ago to prove that for the right guy - healthy, dominant, hometown favorite, Cy Young caliber - he would pony up. And what he did was stall and stall until he could pass the burden off on a green GM. The usual refrain that "we don't know how Ryan will act" defies reality. You are welcome to hope for a change in behavior, but don't pretend you are equal grounds of evidence. You're not, guesses can still be better supported than others and this isn't even close. Meanwhile, I will share your hope.
  11. My god it seems impossible around here to just give due credit and due blame. This whole discussion wouldn't exist if just a few people got off the idea that some one person is free of blame/worthy of credit. As was said earlier, the Twins are here due to the actions of both men. Their success is also largely dependent on moves both men made to Improve the team long term. You don't need any advanced metric to deduce that.
  12. Given how rare it is to find an elite third baseman...you only move him to first in an complete emergency.
  13. That's a really great article, lets hope all this promise comes through.
  14. It's a pretty good one, I'm hoping it's gone now. He needs to be a guy we're throwing out there.
  15. 6 starts was nice, I'd like to see the same. To me I wouldn't put a number on it, I just feel like they are overreacting to tough starts. I'd like to see him get a chance or two after a tough start as a vote of confidence.
  16. See, I think he even had the extremely short leash last year too.
  17. It's foolish in the sense that he has struggled significantly but I still believe he needs more chances. There is zero reason a guy that has dominated AAA like he has (for stretches) not to have had more than a handful of starts at a time. It seems, and this could simply be perception, that he is on an especially short leash for some reason.
  18. I also find myself in the (probably) foolish few who think Hendricks can still be a solid contributor to the future. Gives me a reason to watch today.
  19. Very well said.
  20. Absolutely. In fact, being more involved in this may actually confirm in the positive some of the things the Twins do well and make it easier for them to accomplish.
  21. Who is disagreeing with this exactly? In fact, I'd argue advanced metrics don't apply to drafting anyway. (Or at least, significantly less so) I'd say their most useful application would be on minor league players. The data from high schools and some colleges just isn't all that reliable. Advanced metrics should also help you recognize market inefficiencies and undervalued players among those already playing professional ball.
  22. We can all agree not to throw the baby out with the bath water, but your post has a real fundamental misunderstanding. Scouting, just like stats, are interpretations. In fact, scouting is much more about interpretation than stats. Scouts also only provide limited observance/data whereas stats can take at least one part of the whole picture. As jay astutely said earlier, the cost to really use advanced metrics on par or beyond other teams pales in comparison to the scouting enterprise or player salaries. It isn't going to break the organization and they needn't pull anything from scouting to better utilize this route. if you disagree about their prescriptive value, fine. But we are very clearly lagging behind many other teams. I don't like always being the last to catch on.
  23. I just posted about this too. I don't know who I'd pick, but this would have been one of my top three "no" picks.
  24. Considering 2 of the 3 starts Arrietta has had for the Cubs have been very promising (and one very big clunker) - I'd still say they did pretty well for themselves. A player with even a little bit of promise is worth more than nothing. I don't see fit to keep bringing him up, I'm not sure why you insist on it. I know if I compared a former opening day starter and team top 10 prospect to Pedro Hernandez, I'd probably appreciate any opportunities to avoid that conversation.
  25. Affleck as Batman just made the kid in me cry.
