  1. Honestly, I don't see a way to fix this offense. It's going to be below average if things break well in some respects. If things even break slightly more to the negative this could get horrific. Just imagine how bad this team could be to watch offensively if Hicks and Arcia aren't ready to take the next step? Nevermind the rest, just that alone is going to make this a trainwreck.
  2. If budgets worked on a strictly year by year basis...fine. Putting all your eggs into one year's basket that restricts future flexibility? That's foolish. And the label I would give to that kind of short-sighted impatience would probably get me a warning. Suffice to say, this kind of criticism is bunk and it undermines legitimate criticisms to keep hammering it home. So let's stick with the real point - the tone and effectiveness of this public criticism. The FO does deserve some heat for these remarks because they were handled incompetently. Anyone who has been in management and developed skills to be a competent, influential manager knows that bash-bash-bash without any effort to reinforce positives is a horrible way to influence behavior/sentiments. And if the positive reinforcements are coming privately...their practices are flipped from what would be best practice. There isn't much room to wiggle out of this being poorly articulated. You get A LOT further with your criticisms when it comes couched in an effort to praise those that deserve it. This just comes off as resentful.
  3. Exactly. It's hard not to question an injury that sounds like Dr. Nick Riviera came up with the name.
  4. The problem is that the foundation of talent isn't sufficient here to buy themselves much past mediocrity. The problem isn't the money spent, the problem is about a half a decade's worth of drafting that produced little in the way of contributors, some bad luck with centerpiece players (looking at you Morneau), and some bad personnel decisions. The notion they could spend their way out of all that just isn't feasible or reasonable. It's also not reasonable, as Barreiro was right to say, to feign shock publicly that your meagerly talented team is performing meagerly. I would've had more patience for these quotes if Antony had gone out of his way to laud Deduno, Gibson, and others for coming in ready to earn a job. This would've felt more authentic and meaningful in that case.
  5. I'm completely the opposite - I've found yahoo to be less cumbersome and more streamlined than any other for most any fantasy format.
  6. For as well as Gibson has been pitching, that Rob Antony thread sure doesn't embolden me to think he's coming north. If those results yield that kind of "meh" reaction...he might as well get his Red Wings uni out for ironing.
  7. The unfortunate par for the course. The Twins have always been awful about this. On the plus side, at least these are veteran fringe players they are beating on for a change.
  8. I don't understand why we have to belittle the value Revere would have had to us the last two years in order to establish that Worley has value as well. We gave up a valuable outfielder that surely would've helped this team. (If the injury hadn't happened of course) What we got was a pretty solid looking pitcher....we just have to hope we can find that guy again and find a way to keep him.
  9. Alien Abduction. Because it's only slightly less plausible than some of the things I've heard.
  10. I agree with Psuedo - don't waive him now. Waive him after final roster decisions are made and hope he slips through. This guy was too good with Philly for these results to be taken as what he "truly" is. Something's wrong either with his approach or the way he is being coached or something. It would be a huge loss for this team to have dealt Revere for him and have him flame out this badly. I'm hoping he gets another shot to figures things out with us.
  11. I'm very ok with signing Suzuki. I think a split role, at minimum, is a wise move. But the notion the veteran pitching staff needs Suzuki? Blech.
  12. Kepler should get the nod because his upside is significantly higher than either of those two IMO.
  13. You know what would help me swallow the "we need a veteran to squeeze the most out of these guys!" argument a bit more? If our pitching staff was young. If anything this veteran group of starting pitchers, with Suzuki as the 30 in a 70/30 split with Pinto, would be a double whammy of learning experience for Pinto. But this group of pitchers shouldn't need Suzuki and it's maddening that the team believes they do.
  14. That's just it, these are rarely genuine competitions. There is always a horse given a lead (how much of one depends) and the actual results are only a fraction of the decision. It's why people need to be cautious before a season starts to proclaim that people will have to "earn" their way into anything. Rarely is that even possible and usually minds are made up long before ST anyway. There might be some genuine competitions, but I think by and large it's a falsehood teams all over the league tell their fans in all the major sports.
  15. Right and this was hardly an isolated incident. So the real question is whether Escobar has the mythical "leadership skills" requisite for any Gardy SS. Since I don't have the slightest damn idea what those are....I guess we'll find out soon enough.
  16. I'm relieved Hicks wasn't part of these cuts. I need something to watch early in the season after my "yay baseball is back!" enthusiasm wears off and I have to watch this brutal offense. He would fit that bill perfectly.
  17. This story is seriously nuts.
  18. I think the idea that Gibson makes the rotation is based on hope. It's a hope I share but I don't see any scenario, barring a pile of injuries in two weeks, that makes that happen. I'm almost positive it will be Deduno with Worley going to the pen. To me, the question is if Diamond makes the pen too.
  19. Teams don't do it because players don't want to/have agreed as a union not to. That goes for front-loaded deals and hometown discounts. Lots of discussion on this in the past, probably not worth rehashing - just look up the threads.
  20. Good deal for both sides. Perkins is an easy guy to root for. And, sure, it takes a nice trade chip off the block but at some point you have to keep some guys around for stability too. So good move by the Twins.
  21. I thought I had read the asking price was REALLY high too.
  22. You're right that clarity with the 5th spot is going to go a long way, but I'd caution something else. The Twins know that Hughes, Pelfrey, and even Correia have a lot to prove yet to be cemented in a spot, but they're going to be tough to dig out of the rotation because of their contracts.(anyone pretending the Twins are just going to ignore what they signed those men to do based on even two months of poor performances are being really naive. Hell, it may be unfair for the Twins to give up on them at that point even if they are horrible.) Even still, the Twins know that they are a precarious bunch, which may lead them to keep more of those guys without options than any of us would like to see, just as insurance against collapses. I really have to see how this shakes out before I have ANY confidence in seeing Gibson before June - even if there are injuries or horrid performances.
  23. Im generally with you on that. I want Gibson up now but I won't be irate about it until June. But I strongly disagree with the notion that a guy gets blocked only if the options in front of him are superior and that teams always swap out veterans for young guys when it's been earned/deserved. We have a ton of evidence to the contrary and any more arms added are only going to further muddy the opportunities.
  24. In an interview question about the 5th starter Antony implied very heavily that it was a three man race. Then he talked about Johnson/Gibson.
  25. We've formed bizarre loyalties in the past also. The rhetoric about Johnson and Fryer this year has made it seem like loyalties are already formed. Right now he's in 8th until something with the roster changes. I think a good case can be made for ninth. either way it's splitting hairs because the path is anything but clear. I believe Gibson will get a chance. I also believe it will be far later than most of us would agree. People can claim the Twins will drop loyalties to the 7/8 ahead of him but there is almost no historical evidence for this team doing that midseason.
