  1. It would also likely violate their contract with the union and the major league players would probably see this as part of their piece of the pie being unfairly used. Or, more likely, used without authorization/approval by the union. We've turned this into another tired battle of CEO vs. working man and the reality is this is more like the powerful working man vs. the powerless working man.
  2. However, just like in the workforce, team dynamics can (and do) have an impact on performance. I think having a blend of personalities is incredibly important so that they work as positive forces for each other. And for me - I don't care if enthusiasm crosses into some sporadic showboating. Baseball is way too uptight for a game that gets played out in the sun, in beautiful weather, with a minimal of physicality. We as fans should lighten up about it and maybe the players will too. There's far too much pouting by millionaires about someone being excited about their achievements. If you don't like it - don't let them do it the next time.
  3. I second this so strongly. I love how humble and hard working Buxton is, but this team needs Sano's attitude so much. He's the one I really hope makes it to his full potential. (Though, obviously I hope both do. Just saying Sano brings something to the table desperately needed that Buxton can't/won't) While I appreciate Gardy's take here, his words don't carry as much weight with me as his/the team's actions do over the years.
  4. As someone who has studied philosophy and theology, I can share that some of our greatest minds with some of the most profound ideas ever put to paper by human beings have absolutely some of the worst grammar and sentence structure you'll ever encounter. Pseudo's right - it's about priorities, not laziness or incompetence as a writer. I certainly can see how it annoys you, but that doesn't annoy my brain. I easily see what the person meant and move on. I don't dwell on it and it doesn't detract from the central point for me. We of this persuasion take a pretty fierce beating these days for our priorities and I think it gets lost that our concentration on substance rather than style isn't all bad.
  5. For what it's worth...I do the same thing. I know that I make grammatical errors frequently because my brain and my fingers don't work at the same speed. And sometimes, even when I re-read it looking for grammar, my brain starts working on revision of wording/emphasis more than grammar. I almost feel like my brain just doesn't care as much about grammar as it does, as you say, about the intrinsic value of what I'm saying. So, you're not alone. I share your views about it not always being a matter of laziness. I'd say it's more about priorities.
  6. The problem with Parmelee is very specific. I know it's an "e" and not an "a" but for whatever reason (how his name is pronounced is my guess) - it's super hard to spell his name correctly all the time. I slip into what I think it should be rather than what it is. I don't think it's intentional, just somewhere along the way his family decided to spell and say their name in a completely confusing way.
  7. I would suggest that the real villans here aren't being identified: the major league players. They are the ones not allowing the minor leaguers to be at the table and a strong part of their union. As so often seems to be the case in unions, they become their only little exploitative structure with little care for those impacted. At the end of the day, they're the ones with the most power to change those circumstances, not the league or the owners.
  8. He's redundant. If the report is true it's mind-boggling that they would look at this roster and say "You know what we need....another 4th starter!"
  9. I think for many it's frustration out of what feels like a constant series of these sorts of things. I don't think the Twins are worthy of criticism here, but the frequency of these injuries has become frustrating whether it be incompetence or bad luck.
  10. Atta boy Parms. I'm unjustifiably high on him for this season.
  11. Oh...whew! Could always use more of that! Er....right?
  12. Can Saunders play third all of a sudden or am I missing something?
  13. One positive to this is it may align Sano and Buxton to come up at the same time, but this is still a huge blow. I'm sure he'll recover just fine but it delays this team's future for sure.
  14. You're right, this one chicken is a gold egg layer. So it matters a lot more than your average chicken. Of all of our young hopefuls, this is the one I want to work out the most. But if you're waiting for all of these prospects to workout and the parades to start next year, you're entitled to your belief but it is in complete opposition to the odds. So let's just all hope that this is a minor setback for this major chicken and the odds effect players far less important to our future.
  15. Should I win, I promise I'll give you that highly lucrative prize for winning the over/under in appreciation for this.
  16. I had, what I thought was, a completely unjustified bad feeling about this over the offseason. I'm sad to hear it may have been justified. But it is another valuable lesson about counting chickens......
  17. I picked over. But that's because I have them right around 70 and I flipped a coin.
  18. Grantland had a really good article about underappreciated stars as well that was heavily focused on Mauer and Votto. Worth a read for sure. (I'd link, but I'm at work)

  20. I don't want this thread to feel left out, so here goes: This is yet another reason to give Stephen Drew a 65 year contract worth 8 billion. We'll have like, the most super amzing, flawless person to ever play shortstop ever and he'll be able to shave that scraggly beard due to not having to worry about the playoffs in the near future. Whew, now we can go back to Hughes having a yard......
  21. That's probably true, but people lump them both together more than is fair to do. And that has been particularly true when we are trying to project the offense relative to last year. I think people need to at least recognize that C/1B/DH could be an enormous downgrade this year if Pinto isn't ready or has a rough adjustment period to full-time duties. It might be even if he comes up and does ok.
  22. You are comparing production by positions no? People are double dipping their predictions because they project improvement at first because Mauer > Morneau and then citing Mauer's lack of health as a drain on 2013 catching numbers. But the Twins' production at catcher actually got better after he was hurt. Recognizing that only further widens the downgrade. As as for the position change and Mauer, I find all the hefty improvements being predicted as mighty dubious. I'm guessing whatever difficult-to-quantify help the switch is may be easily offset by Mauer's aging and bat speed. But I hope I'm wrong.
  23. I would call that a pretty massive downgrade. It's the area of this team's offense people don't seem to understand. Especially when you are adding into it that a "healthier Mauer" will have an impact. That's a talking point among many on the board here that just doesn't hold water. The time Mauer missed was filled by a player (Pinto) that outhit Mauer! (And by a fairly significant margin too) So it's not just the downgrade from Morneau to Suzuki - it's the likelihood that we'll also see a dip in the combined performance we got from our catchers last year. It's a double downgrade and quite possibly a massive one at that.
  24. Yeah, the more the dust settles on the Pelfrey signing the more akin to Correia I find it. And right now if Correia decided to go on a sabbatical for the next 6 months I wouldn't miss him. I really don't like that 40% of our SP innings are going to guys with limited ceilings.
