  1. Yeah...that was my issue with Seth's remark too. Jeter is "inner circle" - what does that mean? I judge a player being overrated by comparing him to similar peers and how they are perceived. There is no question, in my mind, that compared to his comparable peers (Alomar, Biggio, Damon) that he has been over-rated.
  2. Desktop using chrome. Next time it happens I will. i think thrylos is right, certain ads are carrying it.
  3. pcinstantalert.com was what was listed on my browser. My malware found it instantly. I ran a check on my PC and I think TwinsDaily is a breeding ground for malware right now.
  4. That's more reasonable. Though I do think their are some that put him that high.
  5. I hope so, I wouldn't disagree with top 5 SS. Top 5 for all positions. No.
  6. This is the over-rating I'm talking about. He's not a top 5 player ever. That's just totally unsupported by evidence.
  7. How about every schmuck who thinks the middle of the concourse makes for a good place to stop and text or anything else. Can we eliminate that tendency? I've been many places and we are uniquely awful at this.
  8. What-ifs and maybes seem like a poor basis for an argument. The facts are that in terms of production - they were effectively equal players. Jeter was worth less than a half a win more per year than Biggio through his career. One player is lauded as the King of all Shortstops and the other guy is going to go on his third time to get in the Hall. Does. Not. Compute.
  9. In fairness, Jeter played a more valuable defensive position to get those results since Molitor moved from 2B fairly early in his career. You're spot on about the rest. He's basically being given MLB Mt. Rushmore status and it isn't deserved. It's not that he wasn't a great player, it's that where he ranks among the greats has been vastly overstated. Especially when you look at him basically being a clone of Craig Biggio in all the stats, but getting exponentially more love/respect/adoration publicly.
  10. Distinction without a difference to me. The overexposure lead him to be overrated. I really don't care for the suggestion that seeing them play leaves no doubt. I saw Jeter and Biggio both play. They were extremely similar players, just one better with the bat and one significantly better with the glove. The stats back that up. Their quality of play isn't the difference. Their market and supporting talent were.
  11. Isn't that largely the vehicle for a player being overrated? My bone with Jeter has always been that the media fawns over him and created an image of a player that's better than he really is. As a contrast, Craig Biggio was a similar player (and MUCH better defensive player) and doesn't get even a fraction of the hype/love as Jeter did throughout his career.
  12. They should really just do a tournament for him. For every show. They could easily fill a daily bracket for him, it's almost not fair.
  13. Well played. And auto-correct can bite me.
  14. Isn't it possible Jeter is both an elite player and wildly overrated? He's been an elite, historic talent but he has also been exceptionally overblown. (Especially in his notable deficiency - fielding)
  15. I have to imagine this is Thielbar insurance. Caleb is about 100% likely to see a production decline. If that decline is precipitous than a guy like Raley may come in handy. My guess he gets moved permanant lay to the bullpen down there.
  16. I'm not sure there is an adjective appropriate to describe how much I prefer throwing money at this guy over Drew.
  17. To me, they were wasted because ABs and Innings were devoted to players with little upside and little trade value even if they succeeded.
  18. id gladly take that in spirit. I get the sense the only thing actually better about Nolasco is the uniform he'll put on in 2014. If it was Garza in that uni at the same price your position would flip.
  19. In terms of value, in hindsight, it appears aggression was not the best move this offseason. But in general it is the best way to act. So I can't criticize the team at all. It didn't work out for them but the strategy was sound and will be sound in the future. So I think one can fairly assess the strategy as having been less effective this year than it usually is without blaming Ryan for it. He did the right thing, it just didn't work as well as it usually does. Also, Nick may want to brace for bizarre arguments that in terms of talent Nolasco = Garza. I still haven't wrapped my head around that.
  20. I think this and what JB said are why it's not fair to say "No, it won't be successful because they aren't making the playoffs/winning the title" It's just not a fair or realistic way of measuring success for this year. We do this all the time in real life too. Yes we have some objective measures we apply, but we also take into account limitations. To me, progress is success THIS year. In future years, that bar will rise with the talent on the team. Right now, with this groups talent, I just don't want them to be playing Red Skeleton's music during the team's performance. Mike said better what I was getting at - the last two years feel utterly wasted. I just want to feel like we're taking a step in the right direction this year and for the competency of play to allow me to enjoy baseball. By the end of June I was just forcing myself to stay engaged it was so bad.
  21. While I appreciated, and agreed with, the spirit of the message that success alone shouldn't be measured in titles.....you completely lost me here. A team should always expect to contend as a goal, there is nothing shallow about that.
  22. This team won't be sucessful in the sense of being competitive for the playoffs. I'm not sure they would've been even if they had gone nuts in FA either. What I want is a this season not to be wasted, I want progress. Watching losses is hard enough - watching it with little to nothing progressing for the future? Unbearable.
  23. I would imagine our 13 position players breaking out of camp look like this (unless I'm missing something): C - Suzuki, Fryer 1B - Mauer, Parmelee IF - Plouffe, Escobar, Florimon, Dozier OF - Willingham, Pressley, Arcia, Kubel To me, that leaves room for a guy like Bonifacio to serve as a super utility player. I'd prefer him over Mastroanni or even Bartlett.
  24. I'll write down what it says but it's something about a warning and warn1.com. Something to that effect along with a warning that you have a virus.
