  1. I think a more lucrative minor league wage is probably your best best for increasing the percentage of African-Americans in the game as well. The path to baseball takes awhile and without the financial incentive to be patient I think that potential group of players is the one hurt most. If baseball negotiated these payments directly with the minor leaguers, that would be something and the free market arguments would be valid. (They are valid, to a degree) But baseball has an anti-trust exception and that muddies the waters significantly.
  2. I'm also confused by the notion that we gave out almost 100 million to have placeholders for prospects. That's some very gaudy placeholders.
  3. Sure what the hell!
  4. Right and we may end up not liking the length of the Pelfrey contract more than the amount. Much like Correia. I'd prefer, if we're going to watch bad baseball, to at least see it invested in youth/upside. Two of our signings did a nice job of that. One last year and one this year did not.
  5. Exactly, how much of Smith's blundering was caused by having little or no ammunition in his farm? When you have nothing on the way and little ammo to improve your club, you do tend to get desperate because you don't want to appear stagnant. Also, we may have looked completely differently upon his tenure had Ramos stayed healthy and he swapped Hicks/Ramos for Lee instead of Capps. I've read a few places that the deal was all but done prior to that injury.
  6. See, this is where this stuff starts to breakdown. You can toss extensions all over the place but doing so for unproven, shakey, or still developing players takes on a tremendous amount of risk. Should the Twins consider this option? Absolutely, if the stars line up and it makes sense for everyone - go nuts. But, as far as I can tell, this has happened for a significant player only twice in league history and one of those two guys is another roiding error away from being an awful investment. The stars don't align often, it shouldn't be planned on nor advocated as a common strategy IMO.
  7. It's a very mature take to be sure. That said, I wish the Twins wouldn't back guys into corners like that. That whole "our way/twins way or the highway" element to the old school style is just such a useless way to manage personnel issues.
  8. This is the key. If you can't reach a dollar value that gets the agent salivating, it's a moot point whether it makes sense for the Twins.
  9. Wouldn't DHing him work against your argument? What better way to keep him healthy then to dramatically reduce the number of opportunities he could get hurt by having him only get off the pine 3-4 times to hit? This is especially odd to me since you and a few others in the thread are campaigning for "win now!" as much as possible and then want to trot out a god-awful fielder in the name of a risky gamble for future trade value.
  10. Nick said it already but I'll try another way: Willingham being in left field is not the same as him being able to play left field. It's not going to fool anyone, in fact, it may actually be illuminating. (In the wrong way for trade value)
  11. 10 players total in the AL hit 30 homeruns last year. I'm going to suggest having 3 from this Twins team do that is unlikely. To put it kindly.
  12. Arcia with 22. We aren't going to trot much this year.
  13. I find the prospect of him being a highly sought after trade piece a bit dubious considering he can't get a contract to play for anyone right now.
  14. Sometimes to get to winning you have to let young players take lumps in the majors as part of their development. At some point, you've learned all you can at AA and AAA.
  15. I want true competition if you don't have guys that are truly rotation figures. We have a big pile of guys that on good teams are 4s or 5s. That isn't stability. That isn't a wealth of options. It's just an improvement over they pile of 6s we had recently. Let's not lose perspective here - we improved (and I heartily endorse the Hughes and Nolasco signings) but it wasn't like we brought in a couple aces here. ERA+ for Hughes, Pelfrey, Diamond, and Worley are all below 80. That's not good, they all should have something to prove to have a spot. Correia was ok last year, but he's old and recently was demoted to the bullpen by another team previously. Given the team's need to build for the future, he should have to show last year wasn't a fluke. So should most of the group, including guys like Hughes that I'm high on.
  16. I have zero confidence the Twins will give a rookie a spot over a well compensated veteran. No matter what the performances are and that's a huge part of the problem: this isn't going to be a true competition for 2 or 3 slots. 4 will be gifted and you can make a case that only one really deserves it.
  17. They would have to pass through waivers to elect to go to the minors. Given their track records, I think it's highly unlikely that any of them would pass through waivers. It's pretty much three options: we DL them, they make the roster, or they get claimed on waivers. I don't see any other way.
  18. If that sorting out is two of them making the bullpen, then it still puts him behind three. I'd feel a lot better about that finding space if it wasn't made more difficult by at least two guys ahead of him that I'm less than thrilled are there at all. Stability that isn't very talented or young or with much upside is not the kind of stability I want blocking Gibson.
  19. He's also behind Worley, Diamond, and Deduno. Possibly also Swarzak, Gilmartin, Johnson. Remember, I said 3 injuries before he gets a spot and those first three are all very possibly ahead of him on the "if someone gets injured" list. At some point Gibson needs to learn how to get big leaguers out. It's disappointing to not get to see that all year and even more disappointing why he's not getting that chance.
  20. I 100% agree with your sentiment. What I think you may be missing is that there is leverage working against the Twins - the qualifying offer, namely. When you consider every bit as glaring a need for the Mets (and maybe the Yankees for that matter) and they aren't rushing to do this - doesn't that give any of you pause about Boras' approach right now? Or concerns, within MLB, about Drew specifically? Florimon is not a long term answer, but he's pretty universally regarded as a good defender. The Mets can't even say they have that and they have mountains of money to play with. The Yankees have little going forward with or without Jeter in their infield. And yet, he still sits there unsigned. I completely understand the appeal of Drew, I just disagree it's the right move. What I would suggest to those arguing so forcefully that it's a slam dunk...if that was the case....why is ST happening and several teams with big money available and I high degree of need...not also pouncing on this move? I think it speaks to the concerns brought forward about him and how these are legit concerns that even those in very powerful positions in the league agree with. It has nothing to do with ignoring this very excellent strategy you lay out spycake and everything to do with the warts of this particular player.
  21. I've been eyeing Chris Owings for awhile. I hope Didi has a great year and he becomes an offseason target. (Maybe deadline too)
  22. At this point, there are 3 injuries that have to happen before Gibson likely gets a shot. Possibly more if they were to decide Gilmartin, Johnson, or someone of that ilk is unexpectedly given preference. I was really hoping we'd see the payoff from allowing him to sample the bigs last year and come in ready from the start this year. It's disappointing we may have to wait awhile to see that and who we have to watch in the meantime.
  23. That's no more of a guarantee. His floor is still much lower, but he's got a nice ceiling too.
  24. Thome was, at least in part, what Thome represented and his larger than life persona. Willingham doesn't provide any of that. But if he wants to sign for a couple million to DH? Sure, I'd consider that. I just highly doubt he does.
  25. I think we need more than a month's worth of at-bats before we declare his floor is a solid starter.
