  1. You also left out his god-awful 2012 and a couple god-awful years prior to 2010. This guy hasn't been consistently good, so he's more of a high-risk #2, more reasonably slotted #3. And he's aging. He's more of a proven innings-eater than some of the supposed innings-eaters they've signed. I'll give him that. But he doesn't wow me enough to put another roadblock in the way of Gibson. If your point is that you'd rather have had Santana over Pelfrey - I agree 100%. But we have Pelfrey and he isn't going to be traded, so signing another pitcher really only blocks the guys that are in AAA - not the guys already signed. The offense needed more help anyway, so I'm glad Santana went for the 1 year deal that I was referring to earlier. The notion a 4th year at a reduced yearly average was going to put him over the top never made sense. You either needed to break the bank or give him a one year deal - neither made sense for the Twins.
  2. Well now I have a sound basis! Sweet - thanks!
  3. I'm not convinced those tackles get picked in the top 10. Matthews probably will be but neither of them are said to be high-end talents. Though one point in favor of your argument is the mad rush to add OL in FA. So I could be totally wrong there. Also, I stand corrected on the DT thing. If you're going to go out and spend a bunch of your money on a DT, a guy like Linval Joseph is a good bet. Only 25, good pass rusher, very capable run defender. Good signing.
  4. Sorry, my post gave a false sense of this. I was referring to precisely this when I used the analogy of the bear in the corner. For me, Russia's incursion just goes to illuminate how far (and really, it's not far at all) the West is willing to go to hold back Russian influence. Russia isn't going to lose their seat at any major table over this and they will continue to be a super power. What this goes to show countries in the region is that you can do things Russia's way (which many of them are inclined to do anyway as you point out) or....you can still do it Russia's way eventually. And don't expect that being part of NATO or tied to the EU is going to change that. You can call Russia a lot of things for doing this, but stupid isn't one of them. They knew the West was trying to squeeze their turf with some covert stuff and they called their bluff.
  5. To me the choice isn't Santana or Pelfrey. It's Santana or Gibson/Meyer. That's why it's not so clear cut for me when we're talking about a guy that's a year removed from 74 ERA+. Rebuilding teams eventually have to hand the reigns over to the young guys and let them sink or swim. Cobbling together a bunch of middle tier starters at the expense of opportunities just doesn't appeal to me. Especially since Gibson and Meyer are likely already behind 7 or 8 guys. This now pushes it to 8 or 9. Possibly more depending upon how the Twins view Johnson. (Their rhetoric indicates 9 is the safer bet) I'd just assume we go after the 2015 version of Ervin Santana when Correia is gone and spend this money on offense instead.
  6. You must not be trying very hard then. If Russia is going to stir up revolution, separate states, use military intervention, and stage coups for considering alternatives.....you should see very quickly how that could have a tremendously powerful influence on decision making in that region. Especially if all the West can do is lob meaningless sanctions and rhetoric.
  7. I'm not saying it makes it right, but if you don't think Putin's actions ring louder to Poland, Khazakstan, Bulgaria, etc. than the EU/USA diplomacy....you're fooling yourself. I'm not suggesting that they do anything to counteract that, but merely to suggest that sometimes if you back a bear into a corner....don't be surprised when they come back out with the claws.
  8. In that scenario it's clearly Khalil Mack. But I'm not sure he's going to fall that far.
  9. In addition to being unconvinced by Santana's erratic career...I'm even less convinced these two are the victims of being pushed out.
  10. This was a very good post. I think I could handle the amount of guaranteed contracts/spots being handed out in the case of Garza. So it got me thinking - I think a big part of my issue is that I'm just not all that impressed with Santana. If it were Garza or Ubaldo Jimenez I think I'd be more inclined to throw another impass in the way of a prospect. Santana? No, just not doing it for me.
  11. But don't take it out of context either. This is still not a good staff, but the Twins have already tossed a lot of commitments into it. FA will still happen next year and they can add more then, especially if they have shed some of these players and have more clarity about their youth. We're not talking about passing up on an ace here, we're talking about adding another fourth starter on a good team that will continue to push Correia/Pelfrey into an interference role with young player development. There would be far better ways to allocate this money.
  12. None of them fixed ticket sales either. That's why it's a silly argument to make. http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/eye-on-baseball/24472284/report-ervin-santana-now-seeking-one-year-deal-wants-to-sign-quickly This is what is being said about what Santana wants. A one year deal to re-establish value and get away from having a comp pick attached to him.
  13. And yet many other reports say Santana wants one year, not multiple years. So this source with direct knowledge is implying a method to improve their chances that directly contradicts the majority of other reports. In any case, Ervin Santana and his inconsistent career aren't going to make any significant changes on ticket sales.
  14. Rosenthal reporting it and the Twins confirming it are not the same thing. Nor does that mean it wasn't offered, but it leaves questions.
  15. Well I appreciate the context, I didn't hear anything other than the snippet. What went on in those negotiations is anyone's guess. The reports are that an offer was made but there are also conflicting reports. In any case, I think Antony's point should be well-taken. FA, as far as I know, happens next year too. It isn't essential to hand out as many 2+ year deals as we can right now as if we'll never have the money or opportunity to do so again if needed. Especially since we (hopefully) have some young standouts on the way very soon (as in this year!) that will need more than injury fill-in opportunities.
  16. I guess that depends on guys like Barr or CJ Moseley right? Though I suppose they could probably slide back 5-6 picks and still get those guys. If one of the QBs slips I think they have to go that route, but I really think this team is in desperate need of a linebacker influx.
  17. The quotes might be out there somewhere but I just heard a clip of Lavelle asking Rob Antony about this offer and Antony basically said "We have a lot of multi-year commitments right now, this probably wouldn't be in our best interest" Maybe that was out of context, but that was the jist of it.
  18. I'm not looking to judge them by sacks or anything ben. I'm a former lineman, I get how you bring your lunch pail and don't expect to get any glory or credit for what you do. But I think you can get lunchpail, nose tackle types later than the top 10. I wouldn't target that position there.
  19. No, that's ok. If your point was that we have crazy depth in our farm compared to the last decade you have my complete agreement. Using Johnson as the springboard was why I think your quote was misleading. Makes much more sense now and is absolutely spot on.
  20. This is a more clear and concise way to say what I've been trying to. At some point these multi year deals start to create impediments to prospects. If you want to do something like this, do it for Morales or Drew. This isn't the best allocation of resources.
  21. 29 year old journeymen aren't prospects.
  22. Wow. This might be a sign that his workouts were thoroughly unimpressive. Even still, that's a cheap gamble.
  23. To be fair, I reread your quote and I would've never assumed you were referencing prospects as well.
  24. I would be thrilled if the landed Alturran Verner from the Titans. We have some strong connections they think may help with that. Landing him would really give us some options with that 8th pick, including trading back a bit. I'd prefer they address the DT position in the draft. You can often get some quality play from that position without shelling out a top pick for it. (It also seems like a high-bust position for earlier picks).
  25. That is fair and this could be the same thing. My preference, if they are going to make a signing of this ilk, would be to go with Morales or Drew instead. And I'm not a big fan of either of those guys, but it would make more sense for this team at this point IMO.
