  1. Absolutely, it's why the idea of Correia being "beat out" for his spot by Worley or Diamond is just a false solution to the roster glut. This whole fifth starter competition thing bugs me for precisely this reason.
  2. Bad results should drive evaluation, but it doesn't necessitate throwing the baby out with the bath water. There may be something to learn from/improve from that evaluation. And you can do that case by case. We aren't there yet, but certainly some of my positivity about the deal has dulled.
  3. This is a good point. Just because it's hindsight doesn't mean it wasn't a bad trade if May and Worley wash out and Revere sticks around. You can say the idea/method was good at the time, but something went wrong in the deal if it didn't pan out. You can still say that without totally trashing the thought process.
  4. As others have said, Duensing represents potential trade value. If his salary isn't above 4M, he might at least command something intriguing. It's certainly not worth dumping that potential over 2 million.
  5. Non-tendering a generally effective reliever seems like a poor decision to me.
  6. After their challenges are used, there is nothing that stops this from happening right? Or that a manager can't argue but not challenge? I'm unconvinced this system eliminates that. But if they are as efficient as the NHL....then my concern is gone. It just worries me to model this after the NFL, which does cause major game delays to do replay.
  7. The added time is my biggest issue, so this is somewhat reassuring.
  8. I love how straightforward Molitor is. Damn I want him taking over this club so badly.
  9. If you've noticed, you have slid back with every post.
  10. I'd probably look at a push. I think give or take that's about right.
  11. I'm glad I read the comments first because I was about to post the same thing. I'm heavily in the camp for Molly as our future manager.
  12. It's a great point and I have always wondered why we seem to have so few ways of measuring coaching impact. You would think, given the degree of analytics we have, that we might have a few handy, meaningful ways of analyzing coaching staffs.
  13. Given the logjam with out of options starters, I'm not sure any of these pitchers make it unless there is a wide array of injuries. I vote Bartlett makes it over Escobar, however.
  14. Except that you put an almost entirely positive spin on your projections. How often does everything go right? The number of "ifs" in your projection are precisely the problem. When you have that many question marks, it's fairly likely that a decent percentage of them will not be answered with a surprise positive outcome.
  15. I have to imagine we have the monopoly on it.....
  16. One. Matt Lawton hit a ground rule, opposite field double that managed to hit some empty metrodome seats and after a few fortunate bounces off both person and plastic - I had myself a ball! The best part was that they were running a "get your ball signed if you catch a foul ball in the fourth inning" promotion and their PR guy waddled down and said "What the hell...ground rule doubles too". I reluctantly gave up the ball and had it shipped to me a few weeks later with Matty's signature. I took a ton of heat for just handing it over and trusting I'd get it back.
  17. It's Garza for me, mostly because I think he'll be the best bang for your buck. There is a good chance you could get him now for significantly less than the talent he represents.
  18. 181. That 1995 lineup I would've never guessed in a million years, jesus. I can't believe I forgot guys like Winfield, Bartlett, and Coomer. They seem so obvious after I gave up.
  19. I don't expect anything else and, for me, that's ok. This team might still be a 90 or so loss team even if they sign Drew. (I'd still like to see them do it, but just being realistic about the impact) It's been great to see them go outside their own comfort zone to address one part of the team's recent failures. That alone exceeded the threshold I was hoping for.
  20. Unless Diamond undergoes a splits transformation, there isn't much competition there. Diamond doesn't do well getting lefties out. I don't see, if the pitching we signed actually helps out, why we'll have more than one long reliever. Hence why I think sliding him closer to a 6th/7th role might be beneficial for everyone.
  21. You took a comment completely out of context. Especially in light of the fact that the discussion started with the implication that stat-oriented people were arriving at conclusions and then finding facts. My point was that if you are trusting your romanticized bias of a player over (and especially in direct contradiction to) stats, there is an issue with your reasoning. Especially if you're lobbing that kind of accusation around.
  22. Of the three returning starters in the rotation, two are veterans being paid to start. The other is a young pitcher whose had major league success. Frankly, I'm with Nick. The guy, at best, is 7th in the pecking order, I'd rather they start to work him in more towards late-inning situations and see if they can't generate some long-term value in him that way.
  23. At this point, we could have as many as three long relievers in the pen because of 40 man issues. So who knows.
