  1. Quite possible, but his playing time also became inexplicably sporadic.
  2. I get that you don't like Vargas, but this is far from even-handed analysis. Do you treat Buxton's production the same way? I see Vargas having changed his approach significantly last year, I'd love to see what he could do with a full season of ABs. If he can't produce, then we move on, but this team needs to invest in players like Vargas.
  3. I'm not disagreeing, I'm just saying the Dept of Ed, through it's existence to date, hasn't been able to accomplish much. Various initiatives have been sloppy and stupid at best. Harmful at worst. And I would suggest that comes from the weird state vs. federal battle that is constantly being waged. As I said, I'm good with common core, I'm good with national oversight on a great many things. But my argument is that the Dept. of Ed. was never really that. It was more meddler than overseer.
  4. For better or worse, how this plays out is going to be a major test, for me, for this new FO. I'm quite confident how Terry Ryan would do this. (bleed it out, probably have him on the 25 man roster, tell everyone he's fine, suddenly he's throwing 85 and getting shelled for three weeks, put him on the 15 day DL for a month, then finally 60 day DL him somewhere in August) So, I'll definitely be watching how this is handled. I hope to see change for the better.
  5. Absolutely, there are a lot of ways to become a fan. But if you're baseball, you want to hook them young and not hope they come back later,
  6. Why not just sign another damn coach then? I don't get wanting another no-field 1B/DH guy.
  7. True, but when you combine a batting average like that with his walk rate.....ouch. I'm hoping the Ks come down and the BBs go up, because i think that BA might be about right.
  8. I think all sports are experiencing the regional issue. The advent of a cable channel devoted to every region has had the effect of minimizing the national, spotlight games in favor of following your own home team more closely rather than the sport at large. I'm guilty of that for sure. I pretty much only watch Minnesota teams. (except for football) I don't think rivalries change that much, I think that's just a reality we have to deal with now. So i think that leads back to pace of play - how do you get new fans interested? I don't think you do it with 4 hour baseball games. The days where a kid like me grew up enjoying Twins games on the radio during the summer are over. The product on TV matters a lot.
  9. Well, you could argue it's been problematic from the get-go, under administrations from both sides of the aisle. There needs to be federal oversight of education, but mostly it should be in regards to licensing charters and assuring a minimum per-pupil funding among other things. I'm also ok with federal standards like common core, largely because some states need the kick in the ass.
  10. Time to start pursuing some ethics violations. These are pretty stark and a way to at least get the ball rolling.
  11. I don't know how to react to those numbers....at first I though "ugh", then I got myself from "meh" to "alright", but I think I'm back to "ugh".
  12. Would it though? I can't look it up, but just from memory Mauer isn't particularly good at hitting the ball up. If the new strike zone happens, that's where he'll see more pitches. I'm not sure this is correct, but what is your reasoning?
  13. Well, I worry it's a backhanded way to boost offense. I'm not sure i like tinkering for the purpose of selling commercial time.
  14. Yeah, I don't see what these changes do to improve the sport. Pass.
  15. As far as I know Legion (and his mother I suppose) are the only characters in the x-universe. Plaza was a brilliant casting choice also.
  16. I'm good with this.
  17. On what are you basing your assessment of his defense being "teriffic"?
  18. I wouldn't call him injury prone, but we're close to that. Some bodies absorb impact and avoid injury better than others. So far, his track record isn't very good on that front. It's a major concern i have about him.
  19. I agree, but the only way to fight those is to find a way to get people into office. So it's an uphill fight for sure, but it has to happen. It's the only way to reverse some of those things. And these aren't new problems, it's how the House became a ****-show for crazies.
  20. If you think an identified socialist can escape examination on whether he'd raise taxes, we're well into a fantasy land now.
  21. That only reinforces the same issue, IMO. That's where those reluctant voters show up (or don't, as it applies here) are felt even more.
  22. The votes are there, the key is keeping the momentum and passion up so they turn out. I read an interesting study on the Rust Belt that claimed it wasn't so much flipped or gained voters that put Trump over, but the total collapse of the electorate turning out that really doomed Clinton.
  23. He would have had to explain it away, somehow. But it's that sort of thing that has doomed further left candidates for decades. You can't run on tax increases, no matter how sweet you promise the returns will be. That's just not how people think and it will take a long time, here in America, to change that.
  24. Here is a link. Everyone but the very bottom sees a tax increase, including the middle class.
  25. And you lose every single one of those working-class, rural Americans the moment they find out their taxes increase significantly. And, if any are holding on, you for sure lose them when you ask them to vote for a guy that is no on God and has a long, sordid history of anti-patriotic behavior. (Or, at least, reams of examples that don't need much push to look that way) The Slate articles come from a site that has no bone to pick with far left ideals. It has every reason to back Bernie and argue he could have won. The arguments made are well researched and thorough. It seems like you're dismissing them because you don't like the conclusion.
