  1. You can do that Van but you still have to have playing time for them. I am in favor of it every 3 years or so.
  2. I would argue the two go hand in hand. The increase in power has coincided with the increase in executive orders.
  3. They've always been around, but they're being used now as a sort of shortcut for the way our process is supposed to work. So I'm all for curtailing them back to pre-Bush.
  4. Here's what I want the Republicans and Democrats to agree on: time to dramatically curtail the use of executive orders. We are on a 16 year run of ramping this up and Trump is abusing it like crazy. Republicans should be all about this (not letting the executive branch run crazy) and the Dems have obvious interest in it right now. Convincing the Republicans of what they should favor is the difficult part, but you might have enough principled members stand up.
  5. Yeah, shut it down. We also need to just completely turn these matters over to the police. It seemed like some of this was intentionally being lost in the exchange of the case back and forth. Much to the detriment of the victims.
  6. I will about why I'm a teacher at some point. I suppose since I am a second time new father recently that i could do that as well. Anyone who takes time, in their day and in their life, to brighten the life of a child is a hero in my book.
  7. I love that rant, but I think the thing that sticks out to me is what he opened it with: majority of Americans want the platform of the Democrats. And he's right. So how do they keep losing them? And lose them to someone who so obviously doesn't share them? Warren is smart and almost always on point, I hope she takes some leadership in solving this issue. It's the one Democrats should be focused on at all levels of government.
  8. These last few pages seem to indicate that it isn't nearly as obvious as it should be. At least not when we decide to swap in a similar prospect to Berrios (DeLeon) and make the same comparison. Which is where this vein of conversation started.
  9. I don't disagree, I was just pointing out that sometimes we get caught in our own little bubble of American issues and we lose perspective on how things are going throughout the rest of the world. Sometimes our plight isn't as isolated as we might think.
  10. It was simply to point out that what gave rise to Trump is not necessarily an American-only phenomenon. Which doesn't make it better, I grant.
  11. Maybe. I acknowledge that possibility as well. He's still a significantly better prospect than Mejia.
  12. Keith Law was also very slow to put Berrios as high as he did. It isn't that there has to be an agreed upon consensus, but more about what is the general tenor of the evaluations. And they ring a lot like they did with Berrios.
  13. Canada has their own issues, flared up tonight. As much as I dislike the policy Trump enacted, this is a global point of conflict in most all Western nations.
  14. If I truly felt I couldn't get anything else in that deal (which I don't believe to be the case), I may well have taken him alone. But I wasn't in those conversations. Having two Berrios-types, plus May in the rotation would sure make me feel a lot better about the long term outlook of the team.
  15. Knapp addressed some of that in the Pioneer Press article. But it is a concern I share about him. I also have concerns about Berrios though.
  16. May has also cited working out of the bullpen as being a likely cause of his injuries. And there is reason to believe that, he was extremely durable as a starter. Injuries didn't start occurring until after he was made a reliever.
  17. The majority of scouting outlets disagree with you. Especially since you just said his likely return is basically his ceiling. There are scouts that think Berrios will have to be a reliever due to his spotty command and stature. And they've been saying that even as he ascended through the minors.
  18. Right, but that wasn't RB's point. He was talking about deliberately putting bad defenders at various places on the field in the name of keeping their bats in the lineup and then shuffling them around depending on matchups. It's my opinion that having 3-4 guys that can play 3-4 positions is great, if they can actually play them. I'm all for that. Hell, I agree with RB that we could train kids in the minors to be better at this. And if Sano could actually play OF and 3B - great! We could put him out there in LF against righties and put in Escobar in place of Rosario. But if he can't play OF, what did you really gain? I know it's tempting to think that Escobar's offense offsets Sano's defense, but we have a lot of evidence to suggest otherwise.
  19. Except your personal preference is just that. If we're going to talk about trade returns, we're talking about general consensus of the players involved not our own personal scouting book on each player. Given Berrios had many red flags as well (and people putting him as a #3 ceiling) he and DeLeon are a good comp. If I started a "Berrios and Mejia are barely different as prospects" thread...how do you think that would be received?
  20. Sure, but I don't think the solution to this is to just shuffle guys around to a variety of positions that they can't play. Find the position the guy is best at and play him there. If you're backlogged....fix the back log. The defensive issues will cause a problem. Your own example shows that,
  21. It should also be only right and fair to compare DeLeon at his best/worst if we do the same with Mejia and Berrios. It feels like a lot of cherry picking. Berrios has had vocal detractors of his own. He and DeLeon seem very comparable and then personal preference takes it from there.
  22. Working with at risk children is extremely rewarding. (And challenging!) Kudos to you Ben.
  23. Yeah, I think you may have shot your own point in the foot RB. You illustrated all the things you liked about the Cards and then mentioned their pitching struggled. That's exactly my issue. They did what you want with players that can't hack it. Where you would you check the effectiveness of that if not their run prevention? I'd suggest the cause of that is the very thing you are lauding. Fangraphs had them a bottom ten D. I don't think it's coincidence the pitching struggled.
  24. I would argue Metheny and Maddon illustrates my point. Both do the same thing, but only one has players capable of it. Check out how that looks on fangraphs to see why the player's abilities matter more than the philosophy. I'm all for what you suggest....when we have the players for it.
