    That's a fair point, I guess it comes down to how effective that changeup can be.

    As a general rule, I think you should exhaust your options to leave a guy in the rotation before you move him to the pen. I'm not sure we've exhausted our options yet with Duffey.

    Given that ownership and the former GM both have stated in the past that budgets and money for the team don't work that way.....not really.

    Bit of a small sample to declare those trade wins wouldn't ya say? (And this is from someone that argued vociferously that the deal was a good one at the time) It's not like we spent the Nolasco money this offseason either, so let's not go down that road....

    A player you have control over for more than a year+ has tremendous value to your objective as well. At the end of the day, the team needs to be able to identify and acquire the players that will push us to contention. Dealing short term controlled vets in down years seems like one ideal way to do that.

    So what has to be the main piece? I feel like you, and some others, say these things but there really isn't much actual substance to it. Or you're well aware your expectations are unrealistic. You demand a return so narrowly defined as acceptable that you basically stack the deck for your skepticism to be warranted. So is your main piece demand based in the real world or are we back to a lot of what it seemed like this offseason with Dozier?

    Well, you can never know for sure. But you're suggesting a good starter with some control will net less than Eduardo Nunez. I understand skepticism, but don't you think you're taking it a tad farther than that?

    I am wary of trending down the "what could we get in a trade" road. But I'll say this: A good return with a Top 50 pitching prospect in it may not make you fall out of your chair. "Good return", thanks to Dozier this offseason, seems to have morphed into "blow me away" territory. A top 50 SP prospect and one or two other guys with upside is what I'd look for. The closer to the majors the better.

    Yeah and if you're going to do it, aren't you pretty much hell bent on stealing a base too? That never seems to happen either.

    As good as the outfield defense has looked, the infield defense has been pretty good too. We just need them to be competent and they've more than done that so far.

    Pitchers are often not attacking the same way in ST. They are working on pitches or locations and not approaching at-bats as they typically would. I'm not as worried about him being 1-15 or whatever. I'm worried about how he got there and how he got there is not a new issue for him. I think he needs to be up and working on it, but I'd prefer a little less pressure on the kid while he does so.

    That's true. I just worry this move had very big upside and very big downside. It's too early to say either way, but my feelings about that haven't changed. If Buxton can come through in big spots, it might really drive the kid. But continued performances like this and we may not have his defense in CF for the season. At some point, striking out this often will necessitate a demotion.

    This kind of start is part of why I was worried about him hitting third. Maybe they were doing it as a confidence boost, but it's time to hit him ninth. The kid needs to focus on making hard contact and not striking out.

    Man, one game. We're a desperate bunch huh? I too hope Santana is great this year. And we move him for an arm that will be great for the next 6 years.

    Bunting for a hit is fine. "Hit it on the ground and run" = awful. There is a difference.

    I think the two "long" men are an indication of two things: 1) The FO really wants Haley on the roster, but everyone is agreed he's functionally useless 2) There are serious concerns about the ability of our starting staff to pitching significant innings early on. Neither of those warms my heart much.

    I don't disagree, but it would seem the Twins made the decision on Duffey second to Haley. Which is a problem.

    I think the lingering doubts about Hughes play into that thought about having a viable long man. But I agree, if the FO likes Haley's future, toss the Sox some cash or some meh prospect. Don't jack with your roster. It reminds me of JR Graham. He largely just held a spot his rule 5 year only for us to dump him unceremoniously a month into the following year.

    Yup, I own that. And sometimes he vindicates me and sometimes he makes it valid. I worry we'll wish we could have anything close to DeLeon for him by July.

    Honestly, with how erratic he is, anything from 20 to 40 is defensible. But I'm a pessimist about him, but that may just be because I fear he'll binge again and then get a totally awful contract extension. I think I need more time away from Terry Ryan to center myself.
