Aren't wins a team stat irrelevantt to the pitcher's actual performance? Just kidding with you. Ian Kennedy and Phil Hughes were the only two pitchers last year to have 15 wins or more and an ERA over 4. There were a lot of pitchers with more than 25 starts, sub 4 ERA that did not make 15 wins.
You could do he research yourself and find out if there was a difference in the ERA of the staff when Butera pitch versus not. What part of pitch selection is figured into WAR? What part of framing to get more strikes is figured into WAR? There is a lot more that goes on in a game than is computed by WAR.
Not evidence he belongs. Not proof he can't be. He hasn't played above AA. His AA numbers were pedestrian. That would be more of an indication he might not be much better than Butera. Problem is how is he as a catcher? If he was great as a catcher, why was he in the outfield?
In the last three years what other catcher in the minor league system did the Twins have to replace Butera? In regards to Hermann at the major league level you might have missed a couple of things. This spring and last fall Hermann proved he was not ready for magor league level of play. Batting 056 is better than .196?
Phillies are about a 150 million payroll. Next year they have 7 players taking 125 million. If they were not concerned about money they might have signed Bourn. They might have seen something in his game while they played against Atlanta to think that he is an overly expensive Ben Revere. In their view Worley might not have been a long term front end starter. They have plenty coming to deal with the long term. The next few years they have the big three locked up.
Forbes estimates the income. They estimate the expenses. The only number you can really believe is the players salary, money from television, how much debt from the purchase of the club, and attendance numbers.
So many variables. Worley would be allowed to work through difficulties if not injured. Pelfrey it would depend on if the Twins feel if were due to injury rehab taking longer, what the brass thinks of his pitching prior. Correia is anybody's guess. They did say something once about him being flexible (would go to bullpen) so it might be part of the plan. DeVries and Hendricks holder their own would mean they were consistently providing quality starts with the other three not doing so.
The components of WAR are fielding and hitting. You would have to find how each position counts the fielding. MI fielding counts more so I would think it would have to be quite a bit better hitting.
Fangraphs or any other projection is more than likely would be based on a statistical model of average regression from level to level rather than any assessment actual talent. It effectively discounts the player learning to use the talent at a higher level more effectively.
The Rays have to trade because they do not have financial resources to resign their players. Minnesota should be in a little different boat. As with the Santana trade, if the Twins were trying to maximize their return , potential trading partners went elsewhere.
As far as I know Boras has done nothing criminally wrong to earn disdain. When you need a lawyer and want to win you don't care if he is a dick, drama queen, wears a sweater vest, has the same turn on as Marv Albert or is two faced. Just win baby.
Most teams will not go out of their way to lose to get draft dollars because every loss contributes to fan attrition. The fan dollars are the real dollars to the owner. In general those teams losing that much are not going to spend the money on a top Boras client unless you are Miami trying to make your once every 10 year bid for a title. Boras has to put this kind of spin on it. Lohse is coming off a career year and Boras more than likely wants him to get paid like Lohse will do it every year. I don't think there is a team out there that would do it now that the Yankees are retrenching. Boras made a mistake. Ryan Dempster received a 2 year contract at less per year than a qualifying offer, Lohse wouldn't get that kind of money regardless of the status
Baseball Prospectus | Baseball Therapy: What Really Predicts Pitcher Injuries? sheds a little light. Verducci said that under 25 and increasing workload more than 30 innings from the previous year also leads to injuries.
It would appear that people are forgetting a few things along the way. It is hard to fire the scouts for a bad draft as the results are not known for years. I can't remember where I read it but the Twins do keep track of how well the scouts do with their recommendations and move out the less successful ones. The current scouting director would appear to be getting the job done by the prospect rating lists. Baseball drafting is rarely the instant gratification that some seek. In 2000 the Tampa team drafted Shields in the 16th round. No other player from that draft made much of an impact for Tampa. They signed 6 pitchers that they drafted before Shields. None ended up household names. The following year, nobody they drafted played much in the majors. They drafted 9 pitchers in 16 rounds 16 being where they picked Shields) There is a lot of luck involved.
Unless you are one of the top players , almost no one gets more than a three year contract lately. In terms of not lucrative, Fielder, Pujols, Swisher, Hunter and Victorino would disagree with you.
