  1. you forgot Correia and the loser of Floriman and Escobar battle
  2. Santana expressed a desire to leave long before the Ryan offer. As there were only a few teams at that time that would be able to meet Santana's salary demands that limited any leverage Smith had. The less that the Mets had to offer was a reflection of what was in their system at the time. Gomez, Guerra and Humber were top 100 in the minors prospects. Mulvey was not thought of as an throw in type of player. The Twins got less because Smith wouldn't go for the better package that Boston offered, He thought he needed a center fielder and Boston would not give up Ellesbury. How different the Twins would have been with Lowrie and Lester Of course if the Twins would have kept Santana, had him sign with the Yankees and drafted the player California did with that pick they would be calling Smith a genius.
  3. Pierzynski and Santana were both on the last year of a contract. How is the leverage on one any different than the other other than that is your opinion?
  4. Hendricks has shown an ability to be very good at a level for a longer stretch than 4 innings. See last year in the minors as well as 2010. Deduno has not ever shown that. Hendricks has shown that he can be much better than a 1.5 whip pitcher, Deduno has not.
  5. DeVries rated an 81 on the early model. They must have used the Expected Pitching Effectiveness tool from the prognosticator in Pennsyvania who predicted DeVries could be an ACE of the staff. There must not be many out there with future Twins fans if they have that much time for games.
  6. The battle is performance in the situation. A long time back I said watch when players are being plaid. Hicks has been getting first team reps. If they assess that he can do well they will keep him. The assessment is not the statistic per se but how they feel he is handling the pitching. Topic of the thread, De Vries, if he is starting the games then you have an idea they might want to keep him and get him stretched out. The assessment is not the ERA but rather the mistake pitches he throws. They killed his mistakes last year, when he threw well, there were better results.
  7. That has probably been said of Deduno for the last 10 years
  8. Because spring training numbers as a whole are meaningless. A body of work pitching to the second string is meaningless. Too bad more fans do not understand that.
  9. distilled potato juice?
  10. If you think your player is worth the qualifying offer for one year, you offer it. The club is ahead as there is only a one year commitment. For an older player like Lohse it protects the club. I could see the Twins doing that to Morneau if he has a good year.
  11. If they lose 162 games by one run they would be competitive in each game. The games they play in August or September may be meaningful to keep the other team from winning the division as they play half of their games at that time against division opponents. If you want to twist negative, there you go.
  12. Wouldn't it be nothing if dfa. It might be worth a trade if he were a shortstop.
  13. 15 million a year wasn't significantly higher than 12?
  14. The Twins offer was less years and money than the Angels, I was pointing out the report that the White Sox were a team that made an offer. Do you have what the White Sox offered? The year before JD Drew signed 5/60. A 3 year contract would be far too short, but averaging 15 mil per year is not in terms of the Drew contract lowball in terms of dollars per year.
  15. The market value as you call it is set after the contract is signed. It was pretty much a universal wow when the Angels went that high. Doesn't excuse the Twins from not increasing their offer when the first was rejected. Hunter's agent never gave the Twins a counter offer either. The dollars per year was more than competitive with what other players received the same year or previous years. The other offers Hunter had were never made public that I know of. I recall that the White Sox made a 4 year offer. It would be reasonable to think that the dollar amount wasn't high enough. The Twins probably were more money per year, The Sox more years. The Angels came out of nowhere and made an offer Hunter couldn't refuse nor bother to give the Twins notice. I do remember later reports on Hunter not liking the interaction he had with Smith and felt the outcome might have been different with Ryan as GM Santana made it clear he wanted to play elsewhere irrespective of offer.
  16. Then the charts of the player's WAR would have zero relevance to the reason for the story.
  17. The nuance of the game I never understood though is a catchers had spent a lot of time watching baseballs leave a pitchers hand and track where they go to catch them. Shouldn't they be as a group better hitters?
  18. Did not do ball sports as I had a lot of problems with depth perception. I have propelled myself down roads, paths, and trails though. Everybody has a sport that they can do. Generally those that did not play the sport do not learn the nuances of the game but if you pay attention and talk to people you do pick up a lot.
  19. It is a great living even at the "minimal" wage a pre arbitration player.
  20. You are probably wrong on your assessment since the promotion of Johnson came at the same time as Radcliff and Smith were promoted. http://minnesota.twins.mlb.com/news/press_releases/press_release.jsp?ymd=20070913&content_id=2206506&vkey=pr_min&fext=.jsp&c_id=min
  21. Followell is the pro scouting director. Responsible for assessing the Scott Diamonds of the world, as well as that 5th starter they signed
  22. Coulda woluda shoulda game. Same position misses on selections 2004 Twins, Matt Fox, next selection Gio Gonzales A few selections later they selected Jay Rainville Next selection Hudson Street 2005 they took Hank Sanchez. a 1B. Couple selections later, Jed Lowrie 2001 second rounder Scott Tylerl, 25 picks later, Dan Haren 2003 Matt Moses. Next player selected that turned out was a few selections later, Chad Billingsly. I supose in 2000 with Adam Johnson you could say Chas Utley, but that was 13 picks later, with a lot of bad inbetween
  23. The statistics may be meaningless but individual matchups could be important. It is not so important how the prospect does in a game against the fellow prospect, but what they do against the top of the line players could be important. How else would you determine some semblance of readiness for the next level? Or total overmatch?
  24. The people say it is random when their second favorite team behind the Twins loses a close series. However, I thought youwere enough of a stats guy to know that a coin flip will even out over time but 7 is a small sample size. Also from year to year the cast of players changes on every team so it is not equivalent to a coin flip.
  25. To the long lost son of my thankfully long dead mother in law, try for a change to have a fact. If you are going to criticize the percentages of draftees playing then also have a clue about what the other teams success rate is. More half truthes out of people. Mkake up stats and their significance. Besides, it is the scouting director, not Ryan that makes the selections. Deron Johnson has been on the job as director since 2007
