  1. Maybe I have a different opinion because I work in a field that is ever changing, and also practice is evidenced based. Does a single one of you have any idea on how Corrigan assess talent? There is no way you can say what school he is. When you want to be successful you look for all means to do so. The GM who brought the idea of sabermetrics to a front office is now 65. He was A GM starting in 83. The difference between that person and the Twins FO is he talks about how he does what he does.
  2. Lost on the Ryan is old school crowd is the notion that all along he may have been doing his own form of statistical analysis that use many of the same concepts the so called advanced statistics people use. Any of these stats use a key component that the designer views as their key. He has his. If he appears dismissive it is because it may well have already been done for years.
  3. It would not be a PR move. The adding of players that were born in Minnesota to play out their final seasons did not increase attendance.
  4. Why are there no calls for a black coach, as no one can understand the culture of being black in America because they are not black? Coaches are hired for their ability to work with people. In any diverse workplace there are going to be a variety of different cultures. A coach or manager will not last long in the profession without the ability to work with all kinds of people to get the best out of them.
  5. Mike Marshall once talked about the need for a pitcher to make a difficult pitch. A primarily sinkerball pitcher really doesn't have the out pitch. No blazing fastball, no wicked slider, no devastating changeup is generally what makes someone a 4-5 starter. The exception would be superior command. That is not the current Twins
  6. Kuroda was a free agent after 4 years with the Dodgers.Cesepedes deal was for 4 years. Are you sure that they are bound by the 6 year rule. Why they do not count against the international cap is years as a professional. That is why I did not think they were bound to a team for 6 years
  7. Morneau hasn't been the same post concussion. For Abru to be a comparable he would have to be kicked in the head. All of the 1b you cited (Swisher was signed to be a RF but played 1b) had off seasons. But it does prove my point, if the agent thought he was going to produce he would have went for a shorter contract. Look what these guys are paid, An argument you did not refute. The point isn't his wage per say, rather he is not going to be a great player. How the agent did the contract is the proof. It is not the he is overpaid aspect.
  8. Wimmers was more old school lower risk. If Pat Dean continues to pitch like he did for the 6 games in Rochester he stands a chance. Most of the draftees are high risk. Radcliff's ability to find starters outside of the first round were Baker, Slowey, and Blackburn. That is hardly a stellar record.
  9. 3 years ago Adam Dunn signed a 4/56 contract. If Abru's agent thought he could hit home runs like Adam Dunn then he would have went for a short 2-3 year contract so he could cash in. How many 34 year olds get the monster contract? For the level Abru will perform at, you are correct. The price went too high.
  10. Chastising for not spending the money assumes he will be an above average first baseman. They are paid to evaluate talent. It is not fear of disappointment, it is called talent evaluation. Would you pay 68 million for Jamie D'Antona? You see big numbers for a player and think they will translate to major league success. Power from a long swing disappears with a plus fastball.
  11. It is if it is a below average player. See any complaint about Blackburn's contract.
  12. Wacha, Lynn, and Miller wouldn't be going anywhere You have 3 veterans Westbrook, Carpenter and Wainwright You also have Kelly, Lyon and Garcia that start. You have Martinez in AAA rated highly. That is 10 starters. Not to mention Whitting, Gast or even Addington might be better than any starters in AAA for the Twins. I know a few have had injuries, but that is still riches. What would it take to pry one away?
  13. Kuroda, Colon, Guthrie, Sanchez, Iwakuma did not change teams. So out of the pitchers that CHANGED teams, 3 had good years. Greinke and Lohse because that is what you would expect, and Liriano. Changed teams, not stayed with the same team. That was the parameter I set for my thought. You can discuss how I might be wrong, but you can't change the parameter that I set. Correia for better or worse pitched about like he always has. Can't say that for Haren, Saunders, Marcum, McCarthy ....and the rest who all had seasons pretty much worse than what Correia had.
  14. Respectfully disagree as it is the same post over and over again. In an effort to discredit to make their point once again a poster changes context. The start of the thread it is eliminating half of the sentence that Ryan spoke. What you label as a great post takes what Ryan said while laughing as whining. How do you have a discussion with people when you cannot have faith in what they cite as being accurate? If a student handed you that kind of paper, what grade would you give?
  15. There is nothing wrong with the philosophy of pound the zone and get ahead of the hitters. See how the Cardinals get ahead of the batters. It is that the hitter know there will be a mistake coming sooner or later and then bam. As Thyrlos notes, sometimes it is the first pitch.
  16. Friday shall prove to be interesting as this will be the second time the Dodgers see Wacha. He really did not start that many games so batters are not that familiar with him. What he does is very good, but I don't know if it will stand up over time. Baseball is that way. Hole in one's game will get exposed over time. To AshburyJohn. The GM of the Cards has been involved in scouting then GM for quite some time. Micro analysis of the game which should predate sabr, gives you ideas on what you think will work. You see what works when it is working in your home field and you go from there. For the Cards they focus on fastball. How Shelby Miller was available as a 19th position in the round pick rather than earlier , Baseball Prospectus | Future Shock: Scouting Report: Shelby Miller Sometimes it is not really a find in the later rounds rather it is determination by the drafting club. The slot system in place now changes that somewhat.
  17. Changing a comma to a period deviates the sentence from what it meant to something different. For almost all of the free agent pitchers signed with a new team last winter a GM could say "This year we thought we did a little better with the rotation with ..." and follow the comma in the statement with some form of we didn't meet the goal. The Dodger's GM is all smiles with his signings. Cleveland with Kazmir, Cubs with Feldman. As starters that is about it. Ryan has to be happy that Correia maintained his level of pitching and did not regress or get injured.
  18. The combined WAR for all Twins starters is exceded by every Detroit starter except Porcello who had a 3.2 WAR. That 3.2 WAR as a 5th starter made him by WAR the 36th best pitcher in MLB. As Detroit will attest, you need a good bullpen. A good bullpen doesn't do much for you when there is nothing there to protect.
  19. Any free agent the Twins sign should have a front loaded contract. It might be a first for baseball and possibly really shake up how business is done. Imagine how contentious things could get.
  20. Another 2b was one trade Sal Butera Clayton Mortenson Thomas Neal minor league pitchers that do not advance (what the Twins gave up to get a 2b) Mike Dunn and Omar Infante for Uggla Jacob Turner and a bunch of suspects for Infante (There was a pitcher thrown in the deal by the Marlins to make Detroit feel like it wasn't being robbed) Off the top of my head it is difficult to remember 2basemen being moved very often, or for much. By WAR it might be the least productive position in baseball. If you can hit but not defend, you become a corner outfielder. If you can defend well, they make you a SS. If you fail as a SS, you play 2b.
  21. If the looksee is to determine if Ryan is any good at judging talent, he started being scouting director in 1986
  22. It gets kind of tricky on how you evaluate a draft over time. Total number of players drafted that make it to the majors. From 92 to 2007 draft the Twins have selected 116. Signed only 76 of them. 22 of them had a career bwar greater than 5. The As 110/90/23. Houston at the low end 93/65/10. So what is a standard to judge drafting. Career totals for WAR regardless of team I think is valid. What happens afterwards is not the result of your drafting. Do you include the cup of coffe players? There are an awful lot of Slamas out there. They got a game or two. There are a lot of players pitched less than 20 innings or had less than 50 at bats. They made it. Might have been a September call up when rosters were expanded. Might not. Generally they have slightly negative to slightly positive War. So what sort of quality are you looking for to call a team good at drafting?
  23. For giggles Scouting Report: Michael Wacha (RHP) | Baseball Prospect Nation 2 pitches are good enough for now being that they are good enough pitches. I don't know if that can sustain a career but at this point it is insignificant. 2 more wins followed by 4 more is all the Cardinals are worried about
  24. many posters have commented throughout the year that all a lower tiered team has to do for the high priced free agent is be the highest bidder as money is the motivating factor. Longoria and Hernandez to name 2 stayed with smaller market teams rather than hit free agency. Small market teams can attract players.
  25. Looking for decisions that would improve the team. Short term fixes were not done. The 3 ways to add players are prospects coming up, to trade and free agents. The near ready mlb prospects were brought up and didn't do much. There was not an excess of them so that you could trade one or two for a capable player in an area of need or other GMs had a clue as to their performance capabilities and did not offer much in trades. What he traded for was not near mlb ready players so the current team was not added to in that fashion. Will Myer in May be better pitchers in 2 years than the 4th starter off a team? I would think that is what Ryan thinks. It doesn't help this year, but it helps future years. That leaves free agents. minimally better players than the ones you have will only make you minimally better. Look what was out there to be had in the areas where the Twins had needs. They could have got players minimally better. There were a couple that could have been useful that Ryan missed on, but not a whole lot. I do not think many are giving him a free pass as much as it is the viewpoint there wasn't a whole lot that could have been done. The trades not working would take away the pass
