  1. Glasnow and Rivio would be Pittsburgs building blocks, not trade bait. Cervelli, Marte and McCutcheon would be the first players they would be trading to rebuild. Cole or Nova if they are blown away by an offer. They could also think their players were having down years and are going to rebound .
  2. Arizona knew him well enough to fire him because the team was losing. Kirk Gibson (an old for a manager type) takes over and Arizona does a worst to first.
  3. Choo was going to be a 30 year old outfielder. That is in no way comparable to Rosario or any other Twin outfielder. Grossman would be close if you want to call him an outfielder. Everything else they sent out was housecleaning of soon to be free agents. Gregorius was a Red and already playing in the big leagues The Twins do need to trade aging, soon to be free agents for developable talent. If only Dave Stewart were still running a club or Loria having BOGO sales.
  4. Sonny Gray would also be 2 and he cost 3 high ceiling prospects. The Twins have no high level high ceiling prospects, it might cost 2 of the 3 mentioned. While it is hard to win without an "ace" in the WS, it is harder to get there without hitting.
  5. Twins averaged 3.65 runners left in scoring position per game, one of the worst in the league. The teams with the fewest runners left in scoring position also scored the least runs.
  6. Well, geeex, ya know if the front office were only jus a little smarter they coulda drafted that Trout kid iinstead of whoever they drafted. I really hope they fired the toolsy outfielder scout guy over that one.
  7. In each of those other plate appearance a decision had to be made on how to go about doing business. If those complaining about the bunting wish to show the magnitude of the problem with some data it would be helpful . In terms of the directions given to a batter, there were over 6000 decisions that Molitor made
  8. White Sox 35, Rangers 27, Twins 26. That is not including all of the failed attempts by the Rangers and WHite Sox. League average was 18. Over 6261 PA, sacrifice bunts are minimal
  9. Kimbrel is at 13, Addison Reed was a midseason add, 7 for the whole year. To get 54 million for Boston you have to include Price's salary for the games he was a reliever. That is shoddy statistics. For St. Louis to be at that figure they included Adam Wainright's salary in total for one relief appearance. For Chicago to be at that number they added Lackey's salary for one relief appearance.
  10. Baseball players make almost nothing in endorsements. The last data I saw was from 2016. Joe Mauer was in the top 10 at a million a year.. A sport like basketball sell shoes. Otani signature cleats are not going to cut it. Otani would always have a market in Japan regardless of where he plays
  11. The Indians and Rangers are in the top 5 for both bunts and sacrifices in the AL. They must different metrics that fly in the face of fangraphs. Your sighing comment would lead me to believe that you have a negative viewpoint with the capitalization to very strongly hint at stupidity The extreme for SH are the Indians and Rangers, the extreme for bunts is the Rangers. The extreme for sac flies is the Indians. Somewhere, somehow an out for a run in a data driven organization makes sense. This is not saying anything about the other 27 clubs , especially since I mentioned on the AL.
  12. The Indians and Rangers would not have the same data? They only started looking at it last week? Same data, different conclusions. The baseball front offices are just filled with ignorant people? Generic data vs situation specific differences in the data? Something in the data driven front offices tells them not to eschew the bunt
  13. Sigh. Ignore the point sigh
  14. To some here bunts and sacrifices are a fireable offense, never mind that over the last 4 years Cleveland and Texas, the organizations that the FO come from, are in the AL top 5 for bunt hits and sacrifices. Their FO must have some metrics that fly in the face of fangraphs.
  15. Molitor is so old that if you now make what he made in his rookie contract you would be considered living in poverty. Molitor is so old that very few on this board would have seen him play at the U, Molitor is so old that many here would not remember seeing him play for he Brewers Molitor is so old that some here would not remember seeing him as a player That Molitor, and Springsteen, are old should not matter in Molitor's case. Ageism belongs in the same place as racism.
  16. Torii Hunter, Eric Milton, Chris Parmelee, Trevor Plouffe and Denard Span all share something in common.
  17. Pick your stat. Santana has pitched 64 games the last two years, Gray 49. A pitcher that can't pitch isn't very conducive e to a team's success. What happened in the other 14 games? FIP and xfip are strikeout driven numbers. Sanatana has a better hitting team, a better fielding team behind him than Gray did with the A's. Pitching is not strike out every batter. That is the limitation of fip and xfip.
  18. bref says Santana has thrown 211.1 innings to an ERA+ of 135 There is a little extra value in that Erv also pitches about 4/10 of an inning more per game. No knock against Gray, I don't think the Twins had the quality pieces in the minors to compete with the Yankees offer.
  19. Doolittle, too. They were neither winning nor losing because of Gray.
  20. So the only way to invalidate an opinion is to challenge somebody if they would bet money? Before the July trade deadline they were 38-30 against the teams not playoff bound. They were done with 3 of the best teams in baseball that they fared 3-14 against. 5-8 against the Indians. Given how they had played over the course of the season given the teams they had to play the final months of the season should be no surprise. It is what they were capable of.
  21. You can suppose that. I certainly did not. I would advise looking at how they build their models.
  22. Oakland had a replacement for Alonso. It also had a far more difficult first half of the schedule than last half. The models may or may not account for who tou play or how you have played that team in the past.
  23. Weird how I only commented on this year and get blasted for past years. This management group has been only at here for this year. The comment I responded to was about this year. So please come up what would have worked for this year,
  24. With 21 games against 3 of the worse teams in baseball on the remaining schedule and only 12 games better teams on July 31 anybody who bothered to read a schedule could see that there was an excellent chance for a playoff birth.
  25. Add what at what cost? A trade like the Jepson trade a couple of years back? Sonny Gray? Do you suppose the Twins could have offered a pile of non prospects to entice what the Yankees offered in ceiling?
