  1. Any issue with WAR is one of a few things. One, it was never designed as a precise measurement yet people use it that way. Two, War uses many measurements which at best are imprecise like in base running and fielding. Three, while being an imprecise measure, some people fail to understand what it measures. What they think and what it is are different. The other distinct possibility in many cases is that some people just like to argue.
  2. Santana's peak value would be at the trade deadline. Any value would be because he is having a decent season and can be jettisoned at the end of the year. In terms of salary dollars having an affect on the Twins payroll for the year, I doubt there is enough pitching out there that the Twins could reasonably, or slightly unreasonably bid on and get to make it to the max that the Twins could spend.
  3. I would advise you to go back and reread the how war is calculated. There are positional adjustments as well as park adjustments. The double hit by the catcher playing in a game in Miami may well be worth as much as the HR hit by the 1B at Coors.
  4. Mike Scott >>>>>> Johan ? I guess the Mike Scott clause, as well as the other pitcher clauses are called t pull the names out of a hat of players who had long careers with a short window of great success. Nothing at all like Sanana's career.
  5. f he is as good as they say he is, he would likely be the Ace for most teams
  6. If you think Rowson can fine tune Schwarber's approach at the plate it would make some sense to get him at a reasonable cost.
  7. Depends on what the Pirate's wizards think the outlook for the season is. If a team thinks McCutchon is the final piece to make a run and gives the Pirates a deal too good to pass up the Pirates could go into sell mode. If they think Cole has peaked and is a peak value they would trade. There is always the offer too good to pass up.
  8. from the article If a potential deal does include Dozier, the Pirates can forget about top-level talent, but they should be able to wring at least one decent prospect away from the Twinkies. There are two catchers — Ben Rortvedt and Mitch Garver — in the Twins’ system at number 21 and number 22, respectively. The Pirates could use a catching prospect in their system (apologies to Jacob Stallings and Jin De Jhang). Although the writer has credentials remember that it is nothing more than an opinion piece
  9. The hockey signings become meaningless as time, and early playoff exits goes on. It is big because the "One Of Our Own" syndrome that affects people here. As time goes on the pair becomes closer to Hughes/Nolasco
  10. Ohtani grew up in a less populated area of Japan. Other than the New York hubris of thinking they are they canter of the universe for everyone there is nothing that says Ohtani would be attracted to them
  11. https://www.bloomberg.com/research/stocks/private/person.asp?personId=4924679&privcapId=851754&previousCapId=32854&previousTitle=PEPSICO%20INC I would guess the owners of the Twins is Pohlad Family Inc. or as it is called elsewhere The Pohlad Group.
  12. The sample size for 20-21 year old players is small. The San Diego players, DeShields in Texas are the ones I could think of. It is too early to say how much of a success or failure it is.
  13. San Diego carried a third catcher to keep Torrens and carried Cordoba all year. What they do over the next 3 years with these players will determine what some do not understand There is thinking outside the box that people clamor for. A team may be capable of doing something that people elsewhere reject the thought as not possible.
  14. Brent Rooker at the same age as Diaz is now was hitting 2HR and batting .257 in college against many pitchers not as good as Diaz has faced. Rooker was not drafted coming out of HS. Thanks for pointing out how someone can develop after they are 20 years old.
  15. Stashed on the roster for one year, 3 option years not on the MLB roster.
  16. All it takes is one GM to think the guy could hit 25-30 hr a year while hitting .300 to be gone. While some fans here might not think that Diaz has that potential, others do think the potential is there.
  17. I merely pointed out the fatal flaw in the whole line of thinking. The game had other players
  18. Houston and Cleveland had the best hands and it wasn't even close.
  19. A June 30 2017 article about the off season grade given the final outcome of the season shows how worthless it is.
  20. It would likely be a minor league signing with an invitation to the big league camp sort of signing.
  21. Guerrier was a waiver claim, not a free agent. Kintler had 6 years as a Brewer and 171 games before signing a minor league contract with the Twins True he was a free agent at one point as a minor league player. That had as much to do with the medicals and recovery from the labrum. They are not the same kind of players as the minor league free agent. The fangraphs thing is looking at the career minor league player after the 6 years are up from being drafted and no longer or never were on the 40 man roster. That would be the Wimmers, Rodriguez and Hurlbut types. It is Slegers if he does not take another step up in skill after this year.
  22. There is a reason that these players are minor league free agents, something Kluber and Arrietta were not. The whole key to the article is the 1% produces 0.5 war. You might find a bullpen arm, emergency starter. Look at all the players the Twins cycled through last year. Melville, Turley, Wilk, Rucinski. were all previously let go from minor league teams.
  23. The number not mentioned. 29. That number has not declined. If Vargas was consistently around 19 Vargas would be a full time player. A Maueresque 15 and Grossman is still somewhere in the minors. Vargas' limitation is his strikeout percentage. Second problem is the number 47. A home run hitter could have a ground ball percentage that high if the HR/FB was in the 30+ range. Vargas is under 20
  24. The award is for the year that it is given, not cumulative. Since the manager is responsible for the 103 loss season, he gets credit for the turnaround, too. What happened? Unlike some many people in this world he got smarter learning from his mistakes. He managed the mediocre pitching staff down the stretch better than the more talented teams and finished ahead of them. For that learning, that marshalling of the old, unskilled, under experienced team Antony should be GM of the year. Nolasco's season versus Santiago//Busenitz's season is likely key to this year's season. Nunez for Aldaberto the strikeout machine will look even greater when those nasty umpires quit calling all those balls on Mejia's pitches.
  25. Compared to the Chapman and Miller trades it was not an overpay. Maybe the Giles trade because people were slow to accept that Appel was a raisin. You are right that Raisel is no Kimbrel, or Miller or Chapman. The trade to look at is Davis for Soler. The unfortunate part for the Twins is that the Reds are likely to think that the return should be like the former, not the later. Over valuing you player is not new, see Brad Hand still being a Padre. Just Gordon would be an underpay, a couple of low ranked prospects thrown in would be the norm. Graterol has too high of ceiling but is also so far away that I doubt that he wold be considered. A third piece would be of the low minors, but not as high of a ceiling
