  1. I don't know if even the players have any idea. Is Bruno giving them the right instructions and they're just not executing? Is this really as good as any of them are going to get? Unfortunately we may have to wait and see how some players do elsewhere to see if we need an upgrade at the hitting coach position.
  2. Really like the SO/9 being posted by Atherton and Albers. Albers had a good month. Atherton is >10 SO/9 for the season and he did that last year, too.
  3. I am surprised there hasn't been chatter about who will get that position on the 40-man roster. I vote for Albers.
  4. Isn't that just another manifestation of his being a ground ball pitcher? If batters seldom get under his pitches they would hit very few infield fly balls.
  5. Plouffe is swinging the bat less? It will be very difficult for him to hit better without swinging the bat. This taking two strikes before moving the bat off your shoulder isn't even working for Mauer this year. Swing at a strike, for crying out loud.
  6. I'm going to the game tonight. I expect Morneau and Doumit to be in the lineup. If the Twins are leading by a run or two in the ninth, I expect to see Perkins. And I guess that's OK. It would just mean we didn't get a really good offer for any of them. Alas....
  7. Sorry to pick on one line, but I cannot tell you how much this frustrates me. If the MVP wasn't Morneau in 2006 is should have been: Jermaine Dye (awesome year for CWS, dropped off badly in Sept) Vlad Guerrero - still played OF - 30 ganes at DH Joe Mauer - highest BA Johan Santana - great season, if you're into pitchers for MVP Jeter was only under consideration because he was a Yankee. Had he played for Kansas City with the year he had no one would ever have brought up his name. Even if his effect on KC was as significant as it was for the Yankees. edit: and I think Jeter has been an awesome player - HOF for sure
  8. No. And I say, "No" because it wouldn't stop you anyway.
  9. Everyone makes an error occasionally. Fangraphs describes ErrR as such: ErrR (error runs): The number of runs above or below average a fielder is, determined by the number of errors he makes as compared to an average fielder at that position given the same distribution of balls in play. Of the 19 'qualified' MLB second basemen Dozier is second only to Darwin Barney in ErrR. That doesn't say everything, but it says something. He has played, IMO, a surprisingly solid 2B. He's also second (to Pedroia) in DRS. He is 9th of 19 in UZR/150.
  10. Notice anything weird about that photo? It does look surprisingly like the grip for a knuckleball. Wow. Great article.
  11. Well, what happened? Did the pitcher get hit hard? Throw a shutout? Did you have to take someone to dinner or out for drinks? Fun story, but hey! Finish the story, man.
  12. Perhaps you are too young to remember, so I'll tell you a little story. Prior to the 1987 season the Twins picked up a guy named Dan Gladden. His career stats are underwhelming. He was, however, a man on a mission. Emotion? He had it. Swagger? He had it. And he was an important component to two World Series Championship teams. Other than punching his teammate, he was not considered disrespectful or a trouble maker. He just played with a lot of passion.
  13. A very nice tribute to a guy who plays hard and has been a real asset to the Minnesota Twins. Where would he stand in all those categories had he not missed a couple hundred games of his prime? Or even if he had been able to come back at 100%? I can only wish Justin the very best.
  14. Perhaps it is more difficult to change leagues than I thought. Hmmm... It will likely be years before we know how these trades worked out. Too bad for Ben. He had just started successfully gathering a lot of Phillies phans into his corner after a terrible start.
  15. I am frequently frustrated to read comments where people want a huge upgrade at SS. As if there are many a Tulo out there waiting for a job. We are getting surprisingly good D out of our MI. At least I, for one, am pleased with the defense we are getting from out middle infielders. And, at the beginning of the year I believed that Escobar would be replacing Floriman at some point. No more. His hitting, while not stellar, has come across as better than I had dared hope, too. Florimon rocks! I feel that we have an excellent SS for the next several years in Pedro.
  16. My immediate thought is for the health of Joe's wife and kids. I'm not a 'Mauer walks on water' guy, but Joe just doesn't occur as the kind of person who would ask for or expect special treatment. Hope all are well.
  17. Verlander, King Felix and that crowd are getting over $25 million per year. For 2013, 2014 and 2015 Mark Buehrle is getting $16 million per year. Sanchez over $15 per year, and that is for a 5 year commitment. If it appears that Pelfrey is really back, that these last couple of months are not a fluke, then give him a qualifying offer. ‘There’s no such thing as a bad one year contract’. And it’s not like the twins are up against salary restraints. Oddly enough, that might not be enough to keep him. It would at least get us a draft pick if Pelfrey signs elsewhere. And as TheLeviathan points out, $13 million kept Lohse from getting signed. The qualifying offer would help the Twins be the team that signs him to a long term deal if they want a veteran presence in the starting rotation. Especially one who wants to be here. Pelfrey does not have anything like Lohse’s recent track record. I appreciate what raindog points out about Pelfrey’s career SO/9 numbers, but his FIP has looked pretty good for June & July. And again, it’s only one year. Oh, and jokin made a funny. He said Boras will be looking for 3 years/$20 million for Pelfrey. Boras will be looking for 5 years, $75 million.
  18. Scottie Graham, running back for the Vikings on why he didn't execute some 'cute moves' after scoring a touchdown: "I went to Ohio State. We were told to act like we've been there and we intend to be there again." I always appreciated that about him. Sano looks like that might be the last home run he ever hits. There are a few MLB pitchers who'd put the next pitch to him in his ear. Then, I suppose, he might think it was a good idea to watch that last home run he ever hit.
  19. Have none of you noticed what the Twins have been doing the last couple of years? If anyone on this team is taking PERFORMANCE ENHANCING DRUGS they will get away with it. There is certainly no evidence.
  20. congratulations to Joe and Maddie! (haha - Joe thinks hitting over .350 is hard - and now one day he will be parenting teenagers. I shouldn't laugh. *snicker*)
  21. It's fun to pull for these guys and I was kind of excited for Swarzak when he came up. However, in 114 PA this year against LH batters their slash line is .321/.345/.557 (.902). Not good. The way they are using him now may be his best opportunity to stay in MLB.
  22. You gotta be pretty happy for Chris Herrmann today. Bet he can't wipe the smile off his face. Good game, young man.
  23. Ozzie said some very nice things about the Twins in the past. He also seems to be able to motivate some players. However... in interviews he gave after accepting the Marlins job he was very clear that it's all about the money. Sounded like baseball was a very distant second. I was not impressed.
