  1. Too many visitors here are so anxious to see Gibson at the MLB level they are ignoring the fact that he still has some learning to do. He has some genuine skills. Great! Now, let him develop some consistency at the AAA level. Bringing him to the Majors where ever mistake gets exploited by real MLB hitters is not going to help his confidence. This is why it is wise to have patience with young players.
  2. I like Provus. A lot. I cannot see ever wanting to hear him more than Herb Carneal. But then, it's all about what you get used to. Anyone who remembers Halsey Hall knows exactly what I mean.
  3. I am pleasantly surprised at Plouffe's Line Drive rate and his contact %. For that matter, Parmelee has a pretty good LD rate. Not sure exactly what to make of it, but I find it encouraging regarding both of them.
  4. The more I think of it the more this sounds fishy. Bryant? Maybe. Moran? I find that hard to believe. (some scouts don't like his bat speed)
  5. Given a projected close upside (as I've read) and ease of signing, it seems Gray is a safer choice than Appel. Cannot imagine Gray falling to #4.
  6. Deduno is fun to watch, if for no other reason that you have no idea where the pitch is going to go. And neither does Sam. The Tigers or the Rangers might not want to trot a Sam Deduno out to the mound, but I rather like watching him pitch.
  7. Agree with Rick. Parmelee has to show something, and soon. I wonder if there is something that going to AAA would give him? How significant is more playing time? What's the point if he's not facing MLB pitching? Really don't know what to do with him. I've been impressed with his D for a big guy; no doubt he works hard. But yeah, can't wait very much longer through slash lines like he's putting up.
  8. Fun to read about these kids. It will also be interesting to see if the Twins wind up with any of these guys. Thank you Thrylos.
  9. I have been watching Benson for a few years and expected good things from him. I wish him the best. However, he was blocked by himself. He had the inside track to be on the Twins MLB roster for 2013. He would be sharing starting time with Mastro in CF. This is what we all thought going into ST. There is no one to blame. He wasn't going to get a chance after his poor play in Spring Training and in AAA Rochester. He is better off elsewhere. Also, I noticed the Rangers assigned him to a AA team.
  10. Gordon Beckham of the Chicago White Sox has a career OBP of .415 in AAA ball. I thought that when he got to MLB he was going to be an unusually difficult out. His career OBP in MLB is .325. MLB is tougher than AAA. I would have no trouble if they brought Richardson up and sent Hicks down to refine his approach at the plate. I do not, however, think we can expect a windfall of a leadoff hitter in such an event.
  11. Hmm.. Good for Chris. (.596 OPS) Hope this is a great experience for him. I wonder what is going through the mind of Clete Thomas right now. (1.024 OPS)
  12. I don't know, Nick. I gotta go with Badsmerf on this one. The Twins do have viable corner OF available, but Thomas plays a lot of CF. I would have no problem giving Thomas a shot. His OPS is over 1.0. Why not?
  13. a black fly in your Chardonnay ... again, fire that waiter!
  14. Hmm... interesting thought, but I doubt it. GMs and staff often are ridiculously optimistic at the beginning of the year because they think that is how you get fans to the ballpark. Unfortunately, when a team is as far from being competitive as the Twins are, it is little more than a fib. I know Terry Ryan knows far more about Major League Baseball than I ever will, but he HAD to know this year was going to be tough and he misrepresented the team to the customers. That seldom goes over well.
  15. There was some chatter about Benson and the Twins being at odds. The guy had looked so promising. Perhaps he will step up with a change of scenery. I know it sounds stupid, but it happens. Good luck Joe.
  16. I don't know that people were wildly optimistic. The rotation relied heavily on recovering arms or pitchers having career years to actually be competitive. Most of the posters here were under few illusions, in spite of what Terry Ryan was saying. I am still amazed that the rotation is doing worse than last year. Wow. That is hard to believe.
  17. Oh, OK. And what, pray tell, did Molitor say?
  18. I am starting to feel like we have seen enough of Parmelee, but a sub .600 OPS will make a fan cranky. Still pulling for the kid but he is running out of time. I have great faith in Arcia and think he will be a big part of the Twins future. There was a really fine article here by Parker on how the MLB pitchers were forcing him to change how he swings the bat. Great! Now they know what he has to work on. Get it done in AAA and get him back here.
  19. Yogi Berra caught regularly until he was 38. Johnny Bench caught regularly until he was 35. Jose Molina caught regularly last year when he was 37. Bengie Molina caught regularly until he was 35. Ivan Rodriguez caught regularly until he was 38. Carlton Fisk caught until he was 107. Most of these guys, as good as they are, really aren’t quite the all-around athletes that Joe Mauer is. Mauer plays 1B, DH, and has played RF. He can get more rest than some catchers and still stay in the lineup. Also, it has been stated here well enough that I don't have to say anymore, but I agree with those who say trading Mauer is not going to happen. Nor should it. And another thing: Mauer may not be a first ballot HOF, but barring a huge scandal or complete collapse he will be in the HOF someday. Funny how people get annoyed with a guy they see all the time, forgetting that he is one of the elite hitters in MLB.
  20. Incredible mismanagement of the customers. The Twins could have gone with a theme of, "Pick Your Guy". They could have highlighted Dozier, Parmelee, Plouffe, Hicks, Arcia, etc. They could have sent a message saying, 'Be here while your guy makes his case to ride to The Playoffs with the hotshots we have coming.' Um, well, something like that. Acknowledging it is a rebuilding year is not so bad. Being an MLB GM and thinking this starting rotation was going to be good? That is bad. So the question is, is he a liar or is he that out of touch?
  21. This is why it is so uncommon to succeed in MLB without some time in AAA. The pitchers in AAA adjust faster and are just plain better than they are in AA. Then it is yet another step to MLB. Tough game. The best.
  22. Interesting list. You don't look at that and readily say, "The best player is..." Details, details...
  23. I wish Pelfrey all the best, but he is only under contract for this year. This is a lost year. It was in March and we all pretty much knew that. Let the kids pitch and see if any of them can stick. I would rather see us getting our a$$ kicked while we are finding if any of those youngsters can make it in the bigs. Frankly, I don't see what Pelfrey, or Correia for that matter, do for our future.
  24. Haha. I like Deduno coming up. This will at least be something completely different. Gibson will be along shortly. 'Cheap' and 'wise' are not the same thing, but can sometimes occupy the same space.
  25. If the Twins won all their extra inning games they would have a kinda decent record.
