    The DH

I've been a fan of using the DH position to let these guys get a rest and still keep their bats in the game. As a former catcher, I can certainly see how a day at DH would occur to Mauer as a day of rest. The 'DH Penalty' above is certainly interesting. Mauer @ .328 last year without the DH at bats? Interesting, indeed. Damn it! Now I have to think.
  2. Well that would be fun. Now all they have to do is read this and get on board! Thanks thry
  3. Don Baylor was an important part of the 1987 Twins. So were guys with names like Bert Blyleven and Joe Neikro. A youth movement does not mean that there can be no players with some years behind them. Let's not trade Morneau before we are sure we can do better. If we keep him the payroll could still go down. (Blackburn + Pelfrey = $9.5 million)
  4. Oh, yeah. And thank you John, for another thoughtful topic for us to argue about.
  5. It's not all about heart. Morneau at his best is an incredibly difficult player to replace. Not just his hitting, but he plays a 1B that might merit Gold Glove consideration if he played in New York. I get that if Parmelee rakes then it might be wise to move him to make room for Arcia. Still, this is an extraordinary player we are talking about. Let's not jump the gun.
  6. Worley is the best we have for opening day at this time. I will be cheering for him and the Twins. Would I rather have Verlander, Halladay or Lee pitching for us? Yes. We don't. This is a rebuilding year. I expect Worley to be part of a rotation that includes some combination of Hendrix, De Vries, Gibson, May, Myers and Deduno soon. We can deal with it and hope for the best, or we can whine. As I told my grand-niece when we took her in, "There is no whining in Minnesota".
  7. Kvasnicka will be 24 years old this year and has never played above A ball, nor had on OPS of .700. OK, well, good luck to him. Certainly wish him all the best. Sanudo had a decent SO/9 rate, but they know him better than I ever will. In fact, I would need to know a lot more than I do to make anything out of this trade. Things like this just puzzle me.
  8. I believe that Morneau could be a huge help to this team for years. I truly expect a strong season from him. However, if Parmelee hits really well and either Joe Benson or Oswaldo Arcia tear up AAA, or Plouffe hits great but cannot stay at 3B, there will be a glut in the OF and they will look to move Parmelee to 1B. Such a scenario would tempt the Twins to trade Justin. Keep in mind, though, that hoping for the type of season that Morneau is capable of from Parmelee, Plouffe, Benson or even Arcia is probably not going to happen. When Morneau is on he is a very difficult player to replace.
  9. And superior to what nearly every one of us ever were. A good thing to keep in mind when being critical of the players. Some of them are in over their heads, but they are all trying their hardest and performing better than we would.
  10. Hey stringer bell - this is a fun thread. I would correct and explain every prediction that has been made here, but the Internet is only so big.
  11. Travel safe, grumpyrob. Depending how long you will be in Texas, the Twins play at the Rangers August 30 - September 1. Hope you can make that. Keep us posted. And thank you for your service.
  12. Thank you Seth. I am really happy for Ramirez. Hope this works out for him and the Twins. Kind of wonder, though, how long they will keep Arcia down. Unless he uncharacteristically falters he is one of the best bats we have coming. Having Ramirez, a fifth OF, on the bench complicates things a bit.
  13. The idea that Gardy will platoon Parmalee and someone else has little basis in history. Cuddyer crushed lefties while Kubel crushed righties. Cuddyer ALWAYS started if he was healthy, even though his stats against righties were quite poor. I just don't see it happening unless there has been a huge shift in how Gardy thinks. (OK, perhaps it was more about how Gardy's faith in Cuddy than anything else. IDK) There will be significantly more games against NL opponents (that's this year, right?). We all have to get used to the idea that pitchers will sometimes wander up to the plate with a bat. Losing the DH for a part of one game, in the event of an injury to a catcher, would not be the end of the world. Nonetheless, I expect Butera to come north.
  14. Kirstin! You rock! It's interesting to read that the bench coach is keeping track of the other team's running game. I did not know that, but it makes sense that someone would be very focused on it. Really happy to have both of these guys with the Twins.
  15. My issue with Garland is not that he is 33 this season, but that we have a boatload of pitchers already (to keep with the nautical theme). I would prefer that we see what each of these guys can bring to the table. I'm talking about Cole, Sam, Liam, Kyle and some of these younger guys as well. As long as this is a rebuilding season let's see what there is to work with. Apparently I've surrendered hopes of a truly effective starting rotation for this season.
  16. I believe an OBP of .360 is optimistic. Furthermore, I feel an OPS of less than .800 cries, "Arcia, come save us!". No excuse for a starting RF of a good, competitive team, to OPS less than .800.
  17. I want to thank Seth, John, et al, for putting that together. It was poor business that 612 Brewery did not know the channel (or whatever the problem was). I hope you got to see some of the game. Peace
  18. On FanGraphs for 2013 Bill James, Oliver, Steamer and ZiPS all expect him to hit over .250, but they all project him to have an OBP less than .300. Not sure exactly what that says, but it isn't very nice.
  19. Thank you SRP. That was excellent.
  20. Boras has done well for his clients, often by getting teams to bid against themselves (see Manny Ramirez & the Dodgers). I suspect the Cards have made an offer to Lohse, but it would be humiliating for Boras to take it, as it would not make him look good. This was going to happen to one of his clients. Too bad for Lohse tht he is the guy.
  21. Escobar sucks as a hitter, but his glove had him rated as the best defensive MI in the White Sox farm system for years. He will be 24 years old this year. He could get better offensively. I, too, hope something special happens for Florimon. Alas, he will be 27 years old this year and I suspect that such an event is unlikely. old nurse - Spinal Tap - hehe tjsyam921 - Yeah, I wish we still had Hardy, too.
  22. Badsmerf - I always think you are such a jerk, but I read your comments because you have some bright things to say. Excuse me, my brother. It appears you simply call them as you see them (though maybe in a slightly rougher fashion than us elders might). Really like your observations about Hicks, and the point about Benson having to deal with a fence was insightful. Thank you.
  23. To me what gets lost on so many is that, except for owners of large corporations, we ALL make more money because of the gains unions have made for their members. One need not read a lot of history to see that. But this isn't necessarily a bad thing for the owners or employees going forward. Hopefully whatever change the owners make works for everybody. When I had a dozen employees I had a 401k option. No business size increase would have convinced me to change that to a pension.
  24. My 2 cents worth (though perhaps overvalued): There are threads I have stopped reading because more effort was spent bickering over some point or another than the subject of the thread. A lot of it seems to get personal. It is unattractive, sometimes childish and no fun to read. OTOH - I had someone post a rather snotty remark to a comment I made one time. It occurred as a willful misinterpretation of what I had written and was demeaning. I ripped into him or her a little bit. Went back later to see if they had responded and my comment was gone, so I guess I have created some work for our moderators as well. And I'm one of the nicest guys I know! I hate the idea of censorship. However, if the board kept going down the path it has been angling toward I would stop coming to this site altogether. My participation has already fallen off significantly. Best of luck finding the right balance. For me this is a great Twins baseball site.
  25. If opponents are unable to square up pitches and are constantly off-balance with curveballs in fastball counts, it is hard to drive home those hitters he walked. Love that line. I have been reluctant to insist he be given a real chance at a place in the rotation because of the ridicule one gets when one says things like that, but it sure looks like he is earning a shot.
