  1. Trevor Plouffe OPS by month: (thank you Baseball-Reference) April .681 May .842 June .879 July .523 Aug (so far) truly horrible in 24 at bats Either May & June (131 PA) stats are a sign of what he can really do or the AL pitchers have figured him out and are throwing pitches he cannot hit. Get that figured out and the answer regarding his future will reveal itself.
  2. Unfortunately I believe that SpiritofVodkaDave is probably right. I like what Winston Smith said, too, but Tony O came up in a time when the Twins franchise (Senators before them) was owned by Calvin, who was unusually aggressive about signing Latino players and treating them well. Not something Calvin gets a lot of credit for.
  3. I agree Thegrin. In addition, the guy is 27 years old and pitching in his first MLB game. He has done a fine job and can expect to pitch again the next week. Is this a good time to go pick a fight with your manager?
  4. I wonder how much he talked to/taught those young infielders. Do some coaches encourage a journeyman like Carroll to chime in while others consider it getting in their way? You heard a lot about Thome talking to the other Twins hitters about hitting, but everyone talks about batting. We talk about it here and most of us haven't swung a bat in years. Oh, well. Wish him all the best. In fact, I now hope the Royals catch a wild card spot. Thank you Parker. That was a nice article.
  5. Not sure about that. However... Dozier has an OPS against RH pitchers of .654. He has an OPS against LH pitchers this year of .963 (coming into this game). He has an overall OPS of .785 in the last 28 days. Better than I had dared hope after April and May.
  6. Another excellent point! Clearly baseball is the best game in the world.
  7. Pinto is listed as 5'11". I posted another time that the catchers who get the best 'framing' calls are pretty much all 6'1" or shorter. (wasn't just an opinion - I had names and heights listed) I suspect that Mauer's height does impede the umpires' vision to some extent.
  8. Promotion to AAA... The Twins organization should probably keep in mind, when considering a promotion to AAA for Sano & Rosario, that D. Romero and J. Beresford have had a hand in the good season the Red Wings are having. This gets sticky, I would guess. I don't mean that they should block the advancement of superior players, but there is a lot for management to considered. Also, I appreciate the data jokin posted and agree that it is relevant, but I lean more heavily toward Brock's points. AAA has pitchers who are better and smarter, many with MLB experience. Sano should go hang out there before appearing at Target Field.
  9. I believe that the 'no more than 20 days in a row' rule is a good one. Everyone needs a day off from time to time. Even old goats.
  10. A World Series team would hopefully have an above average player at every position. Florimon is clearly an above average fielder by any Baseball-Reference or Fangraphs measure. At his peak would you decline to have Reggie Jackson on your team because he was a terrible RF? It's about the whole game, not just offense. Not every team has a Tulo. Of course if a Tulo comes along I expect the Twins would grab him, but Pedro can add some WAR doing what he's doing now.
  11. Completely agree. A .451 OPS in AAA does not tell me that he is ready to play CF in MLB. Hicks' number are from a SSS, I know, but Drew Butera has never had an OPS in MLB that was that low. Hopefully Hicks can pick up the pace. His D is quality MLB stuff.
  12. B.J. Hermsen has a WHIP of 1.849 and a SO/9 of 4.1. I have a hard time imagining anyone claiming him. I like Clete Thomas and he has won a couple of games for us, but those are nearly all the hits he's gotten. His OPS is below .700 for almost every significant split except June. Ramirez and Mastro for CF? Bernier plays SS, which is something not many Twins do. Unfortunately he adds little else. I thought they sent Escobar to AAA to get more familiar with the SS position. I believed they were grooming him (short term) to be the utility infielder, but he's only played 11 games at SS. No idea what they are planning for SS in the future. (as far as backup to Florimon)
  13. I am usually of the opinion that these young men should spend a little time at each level. I still believe that. Sano is a special case, and his appearing for a couple of weeks with the Twins would increase ticket sales. He would also strikeout so often and hit so poorly he might realize he should not be as arrogant as he is. That might be the best thing about having him come up for a couple of weeks. I do not see a 40 man roster move being made to accommodate such a lesson to young Mr. Sano. And as far as ticket sales, I am more anxious to see Byron Buxton at Target Field. (not this year, please)
  14. When you have two poor hitters preceding Mauer it drives me crazy. Two outs to start the Twins half of the first inning. Mauer gets on. Did I mention at this point there are two out? Mutter mutter, mutter.... Having him bat second is far better, especially with the personnel we have.
  15. I am a big Morneau fan, but a qualifying offer would be too much. I believe that a qualifying offer last year was $13.5 million or so. If he has a QO I think there is no chance that someone signs him. Well, unless he can maintain a 1.200 OPS for the rest of the season.
  16. Nice article, Parker. Thank you. June was really ugly. It's nice to have confidence again when he takes the mound.
  17. I agree with USAFChief. It was the right call. IIRC, he had just walked a guy on 4 pitches. To leave him in and have him give up a couple of runs would have lost something, especially if he had been unable to finish the game. Kansas City is a good ball club and could have started doing real damage at any time.
  18. Write a word like HERE. Highlight the word and click on the Link above (to the right of the emoticons) and enter the URL. Then people can read all about the Baseball-Reference data on Josmil Pinto.
  19. Brad, you are amazing. I especially like the way you ask yourself a question and start the answer with, "Good question!". I laughed out loud. A fun read.
  20. This was just wonderful. Thank you!
  21. Who else would think of that? nicksaviking is nothing if not proper.
  22. I am a fan of letting Morneau play out his contract. I think it is a classy way to treat a player who has meant a lot to the Twins and has been good to MN in his off-field efforts. However.... eating part of Justin's salary and letting him go to a team that is vying for a playoff spot would have looked like a kind move. The Orioles have terrible numbers at DH. Why not let Justin go there? Maybe a different hitting coach would make a difference. It didn't take the Orioles long to turn Hardy into a much better hitter than he was here. Then, if so inclined, we could have signed him as a FA. In the meantime we could have split 1B time between Parmelee and Colabello. Maybe we'd have learned something there. Seems like a missed opportunity. For Justin and for us.
  23. I agree that Mauer's value is greatest when he is behind the plate. I expect that he is working on framing as part of his effort to be the best that he can be. At least I hope so. One thing that is interesting to me is that the Molina brothers are 5'11", 5'11" and 6'0". Hank Conger, rated #1 for framing so far this year, is 6'1". Lucroy, who they also chat up, is 6'0". Is it more difficult for a tall man, such as Mauer, to make those borderline pitches look like strikes?
