Has anyone claiming Rocco should've let Archer pitch a third time through the order looked at his career numbers after the second turn through? I'll save you some hassle, they're quite bad. It definitely stretched the bullpen thin having both Archer and Bundy pitching every 5th day, and having them one after the other for most of the season created a knock-on situation where they didn't have enough fresh arms throughout most of the season. That doesn't mean things would've been at all improved letting those guys pitch through the order another time, especially Archer. It was just overall a very bad situation, and I think the front office should've done more to shore up the rotation. I don't think they played the FA market right, but I think a lot of that was due to the lockout and non-normal off-season. It doesn't excuse it, but I feel this off-season as well as getting Mahle at the trade deadline last year have been attempts at redemption that I can respect, even if I'm not particularly optimistic about Mahle's consistentcy (the lack of any reason for his shoulder issue bugs me). Last year I put more blame on the front office than the players or manager. This year I feel the front office has done their job assembling a decent pitching staff, now it's in the players to perform and Rocco to put them in spots to succeed.

I'm not sure his body was what really held him back. IMO it seemed he wasn't ever really able to modify his approach at the plate. Kinda similar to Kepler honestly, but Kep's approach has always seemed a bit more balanced IMO, which is saying something because his approach isn't really that balanced at all. Sano seemed to lean hardest into the 3 true outcomes approach, but couldn't ever keep it together for more than a couple months at a time, even in his good years. I remember him carrying the team for multiple stretches in the late teens, (15-19 specifically) but the highs got so few and far between and the lows got so bad he became unplayable even without injury issues. Maybe keeping in better shape would've helped him catch up to more fastballs for a longer span of his career. He was at his best when he was on the fastball instead of swinging through them like we saw so much into the 2020s. To me, it was always his approach at the plate that felt stale and easy for opposing pitchers to figure out.

Did the Twins Lose Money Last Year?
AlGoreRythm replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It's the only information we have to go on for this subject. Not defending Forbes in any way, and maybe the discussion isn't super useful in the grand scheme, but it was an interesting article by Nick IMO -
Did the Twins Lose Money Last Year?
AlGoreRythm replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Exactly! Great comparison. I cannot understand the perspective of "spend less, put a worse team on the field to get more fans" Baseball already has a dwindling and aging fanbase. The fact that they're making rule changes to create more action and shorten each game is evidence that even the league recognizes it. Lowering payroll will only hurt a franchise and it's fans. -
Did the Twins Lose Money Last Year?
AlGoreRythm replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
So wait, you're saying that spending less and putting a worse product on the field is somehow going to lower ticket costs and bring in more fans to somehow raise revenue? I understand the point of sporting events getting more and more expensive. Trust me, I live in the Fargo-Moorhead area and a trip to Target Field ends up costing hundreds of dollars before I even see the first pitch. However I feel the logic here is extremely flawed. Winning brings in new fans and brings back casual and fair weather fans. Ticket sales aren't nearly the largest factor in team revenues. That said, if they wanted to make money, they could slash payroll, put a cheap AAA team on the major league field and pocket the revenue sharing and media deal money to profit. That's how the A's made the Top 5 Profit in the image above in Nick's story. I, for one, am extremely glad they aren't doing that. I certainly don't want to see a Twins team with a $60M payroll. Imagine last September EVERY MONTH of the season. Jake Cave and Mark Contreras playing every day certainly isn't going to bring in more fans or sell more tickets. -

I'll buttress your point with my own experience. I'm in my mid-30's and grew up with MN sports, but I cut the cord over a decade ago. While I grew up watching the Wild and Wolves, I no longer watch any sport other than baseball. Last season I paid roughly $200 split between the single team MLB.tv subscription and a VPN to get around the blackouts. I live in the Fargo-Moorhead area and it costs more than that to go to a single game regardless of the sport. Gas, tickets, food, potentially a place to stay depending on if friends can put us up for a night, not to mention the travel time involved, and you've got a recipe for waning interest in professional sports altogether. A streaming option which includes all or most of the MN sports franchises is exactly the way to bolster interest from fans like myself. The services have to meet their customers where they are, and cable is not where people my age and younger are found.

Twins Roster Built on Defense and Rule Changes
AlGoreRythm replied to Alex Boxwell's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It's not your lense or style I'm criticizing, nor your comma use. I'm not sure why you seem to be defensive over it. My apologies if I hit a nerve. Your perspective is valuable as a former player and coach. It's a somewhat unique perspective I don't get to read a lot of on the site. You did a good job of summarizing the team's off-season moves and rule changes. Whether you use statistics isn't as important as supporting the main assertion from the lead paragraph (i.e. the phrase "more positioned to benefit than any other team in baseball") with some sort of comparison to other teams. I believe that would've improved the article and made it more cohesive from a reader's perspective. Why are the Twins better positioned than other teams? You led with that assertion but never backed it up. Again, I'm not talking smack, I'm giving constructive criticism in an attempt to help improve future articles. P.S. I've watched you play as an F-M Redhawk and enjoyed it, just as I generally enjoy reading your work here. All the best to you Alex.- 33 replies

Twins Roster Built on Defense and Rule Changes
AlGoreRythm replied to Alex Boxwell's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Are you trying to make a point? Opinion articles are great, but when you use the framing of "the Twins are more positioned to benefit than any other team in baseball" in the first paragraph, it's not unreasonable to expect that assertion to be supported in some fashion. Here's hoping you'll take the criticism constructively as it's meant, rather than making light of it for whatever reason.- 33 replies

Twins Roster Built on Defense and Rule Changes
AlGoreRythm replied to Alex Boxwell's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I was expecting some sort of statistical support for the idea that the Twins stand to benefit "more than any other team" Instead this article just rehashes a litany of previous, more specific articles that actually do provide some statistical analysis of defense, the shift limitations, Gallo, the pitch clock, etc. I completely agree they stand to benefit, but I don't have the context of the 29 other teams and was hoping some of that would be provided here. I'm disappointed there was 0 statistical support provided for the main assertion of the article, and that there was little context given for how they benefit more than other teams.- 33 replies

One "Moore" Bullpen Piece for Minnesota
AlGoreRythm replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I guess my point is that results drive ticket sales, and ticket sales aren't likely a main driver of the franchise financially anyway. Investing in the team this year will affect next year's ticket sales, but even if they somehow sold an extra $20M in tickets for this year, I seriously doubt it would affect this year's payroll in any way. I think the biggest driver of ticket sales this year was likely resigning Correa, which signaled to the fans that they're pushing to compete. It would be interesting to see sales info broken down by month or week during the off-season and see what moves correlate with increased ticket sales.- 40 replies

Not sure if this was tongue in cheek, but I seriously doubt ticket sales have any affect on this year's payroll. If payroll is downstream of ticket sales they're doing it wrong, but I doubt this is the case.- 40 replies

An Ace From Within; Dreams of Duran
AlGoreRythm commented on Nick Hanzlik's blog entry in Twins on Wheat; Add Mayo
I think that metaphor makes more sense when imagining trying to move Duran back to the rotation. The bullpen would just lose the game in the last 3 innings without Duran anchoring the pen -
An Ace From Within; Dreams of Duran
AlGoreRythm commented on Nick Hanzlik's blog entry in Twins on Wheat; Add Mayo
If I remember correctly, Duran gained quite a bit on his avg velocity after moving to the pen. This tells me his lights out stuff becomes slightly less lights out the more innings he's expected to pitch. That mixed with injury history indicates you'd maybe get more innings, but they'd be of lower quality and in lower leverage situations. And maybe he just gets hurt or wears out and you don't get all the extra innings. The risk of injury and potential extra innings wouldn't be worth it IMO. 65-80 high leverage innings with arguably the best stuff in the league in the highest leverage spots is preferable to 120-150 innings as a starter. When he comes in, you can be almost certain the game is over if he's closing it out, or make the opponents' best batters look over-matched when he's there to hold for 2 high leverage innings. It's a joy to watch. As a starter, he's almost certain not to throw many if any complete games, and we saw what even a couple bad bullpen arms can do to a teams chance of winning (Pagan, or even Colome from early '21). If Duran starts, who do we rely on to close it out once he's pulled? Like it or not, he's almost certain to stay in the pen, but I for one, think it's the best choice and the most fun to watch. -
This Twins Team Is Better Than the 2019 Squad
AlGoreRythm replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think many comments on this story are mixing hindsight comparisons with what the 2019 team looked like going into the season. I believe the author is comparing the 2019 team before the season with the 2023 team as it currently stands. It's not really fair to compare this current team that have played 0 games to the results of the 2019 squad. This story is about comparing the potential of the '19 squad before the season with the current roster.- 50 replies

Who Will Be the Twins' Opening Day DH?
AlGoreRythm replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Gallo is a Gold Glove caliber corner outfielder. It would be foolish of them to DH him and not take advantage of the half of his game that isn't all or nothing.- 60 replies

Can you really RE-establish you only have one really decent season? Kepler hasn't ever really established himself as a decent bat, and the shift restrictions with likely give him half a dozen more singles, maybe a dozen more at most. Kepler's problem is popping out and grounding out to second. Shift restrictions aren't going to make much of a difference for him.

Trading a Bat for an Arm
AlGoreRythm replied to Hunter McCall's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Thanks for the write up Hunter, I agree with all of the above. Luis was a lot of fun to watch, but I'm expecting his knees to degrade at a relatively quick rate. I'm one who believes his value peaked last year and I give the FO credit for cashing in. Freeing up 1st for AK and Gallo helps the log jam in the OF and IF. -
2023 Prospect Previews: Brooks Lee
AlGoreRythm replied to Jamie Cameron's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
If the question is who would I rather trade for Parada, it's Kepler, no contest. If the question is what would it take to get him, I'm not convinced just one of those five does it. Not claiming to be super familiar with the Mets system. Do any of the 5 make them a better team this year? -
I'm a lifelong Twins fan myself. Ever since I saw Milton's no hitter at the dome for my 12th bday party. But we've gotta be real about the farm system and what's a strength and what isn't. Wish-casting and hoping is great, but if we're trying to honestly analyze the team, it's not useful.

Who? They have a bunch of guys that were drafted at SS, sure. Maybe one of them will even play some SS in the MLB some day, but a surplus of high-end SS prospects? Not in the least. Only Lewis has actually shown ability to defend the position adequately at an MLB level, and that was before he injured his ACL again. The twins maybe have someone in the system that could defend SS in the majors (Noah Miller?), but there's certainly not a surplus and not of high end prospects.
