  1. There is a risk/reward here. I am more in favor of a 1 year rental (which should not be too expensive). If you buy a long term pitcher(not bad) the following probably happen. You are not extending Odorizzi (in all probability). You are delaying learning which of the multiple minor league pitchers will grow into major league players (and possibly stars) You are using one or two of them in the trade for the ace (hope you don't trade an ace away). You are forced to pay Berrios what he wants, since you have traded some of your depth to find the right pitchers. Don't care if you want this line, but the front office will have to be close to 100% right on all these points if you do it.
  2. My feeling is that Walker wanted more than clubs were willing to offer or the medicals were iffy. Still might happen, but don't know where.
  3. Let's look at it this way. If Gratrol, Balazovic, Duran, Enlow, Sands are at AA. That is to go with Thorpe, Smeltzer, Dobnich. That is 8 possible starters here in the next two years. And there are more. Now if you do not believe that 2 - 3 of these pitchers or more can make it, then you need to buy a front line starter at no matter what the cost. I do not believe that, so Twins need to secure the future by finding out what these pitchers can do at the highest level or at least at AAA. By all means extend Odo and Berrios, but to buy mid level starters to block this group, will lead to the problem of any deal you want to make will ask for at least 2 of these pitchers, and most of you will have pitchforks out if one of them blossoms into an ace.
  4. I agree with a lot of the posters here. I would like to see a front line starting pitcher, but it could be that pitcher is already in the organization and will be here this year. I am looking at the higher end starters and feel one of them will step forward and make it.
  5. We do not know if some of the players just would not take the Twins money. This gives a base until we can find which young pitchers will produce.
  6. Spin rate seems to be the mantra of this FO. This could be an issue here, or Thorpe has to refine his command to being able to hit his spots to a much greater degree than other pitchers. Can this be done, yes, but can he succeed? It seems to be a much more narrow plane than some other pitchers with better stuff. Maybe if you feel his ceiling is a #4 starter, you use him as part of a trade package to get better pitching.
  7. Cardinals as noted above are a good model, not always great, but always competitive. I just hope they add the talent to put us over the top at the correct point. But they seem to be off to a good start.
  8. If you believe that the Gastrol and some of the rest are ready by 2021 this is the right move. If you do not believe this it could be a disaster. I would rather do this and use the extra money for 1 more signing and extend Berrios and Buxton at this time, possibly Sano also. If they refuse, then Twins will have to look at trading them within the next year, so they just do not walk(even with a qualifing offer) and the end of 2022. You have another year for most of them, but lets try and get it done now.
  9. Someone will buy Price, whether it be the Twins, the White Sox, or the Padres. Question is the cost to Boston. Biggest Twins issue is if it is the White Sox they will have an impressive starting rotation (on paper). Do not want to overspend, but unless we can get Archer for little, may have to go this direction. Am hoping the FO is not in the our pitching depth in the minors will work out.
  10. I like both of the ideas above, either to use him as a primary pitcher after the opener, or to pair him with Oderizzi, going 3 - 4 innings or 1 time through the order. Would want this to be paired with a bat (hopefully Donaldson). This could work.
  11. It's easier to sell lottery tickets at the deadline. Clubs are more worried about getting nothing for their assets.
  12. Internal options are still the best, and it is still 6 - 7 weeks left before spring training. See what happens, Twins still have 3 - 5 very top end pitchers that have made it to AA or higher last year. Didn't want to have to bank on them, but now may have little choice. Much more worried that the Indians might sell another of their top line pitchers if the price is right. Dodgers are said to be interested, and they have a key piece (Lux).
  13. I saw the same MLBtraderumors article, seems like the Twins are not in on Price
  14. Please just sign Cole, whatever it takes. It takes an ace to win a World Series these days and good pitching seems to always beat good hitting in the playoffs. Have not seen a pitcher I would want to get from a bad club at this time. And bad clubs are always looking for mistakes or overpays for their better talent.
  15. True, but he is more likely to help get you one than having to face him in the postseason.
  16. Another article on this site claims the Twins are after Ryu, who would require less years and money than Baumgarner. Than Donaldson might be more in play. Would like the Twins to also extend Berrios and possible Buxton. Sano might also be an option, so will have to see how this plays out. I am guessing 1 - 2 extensions, one SP upgrade, and a first baseman in the 4 - 5 million a year range. You could also see if Oderizzi would do a 3 year contract in the 15 million a year range. Then next year you have Cruz coming off the books (probably but he could have another great year), Rosario decision to be made, along with the Sano issue and whether you can get Buxton to sign an extension or possibly trade him at a high value if you feel you cannot resign him.
  17. I think the $135 is a little low. The window is open, so up the payroll into the $150 range. Like the idea of Donaldson, but takes a lot of flexibility out of play. Unless your play is for Sano to DH starting in 2021. Ryu and Donaldson would be around $40, but still leave some for raises and Ryu would be shorter term than any of the other front line pitchers. Donaldson would only be about 4 years, so long term would not block anyone.
  18. This is pretty typical. A few spots for FA signings, maybe a little more for a trade. Will have to see how this plays out. You also are going to want a few spots you can move during spring training if a surprise shows up. Should know more this week (Rosario maybe being moved, or even Buxton in the right deal).
  19. According to mlbtraderumors the Yankees are going to offer 7/245, so start at 7/260 and be willing to do more.
  20. Only if they spend it on pitching.
  21. Just have a feeling that neither Bumgardner or Ryu will want to come here, that is one reason I want the Twins to go big. Would rather overpay for the top of the heap, than Bumgardner or Ryu and I feel it will take a significant overpay to get either of these two here. Twins please don't wait and be left without a chair. Also feel if the Twins strike out in the signings, teams will significantly raise the price for their better starters knowing the Twins are in a corner.
  22. Still feel the Twins should go big. Price on all these impact starters is going up fast. So if Cole needs 7/260 just pay the money, it will go a long way to making the Twins a desired destination.
  23. That is the question as I saw on one website the Twins were the team that offered $100 million. Geography and where the team is does play a factor, I also saw the White Sox offered $125 million, do not know if this was fact, but there were other factors in play here.
  24. Too much for either, and I bet both clubs would jump at those offers.
