  1. Pass on Campana, Mastrionni can be the 4th OF and Benson/Hicks will compete for the starting job.
  2. Yeah I can't think of one real "bust" that the Twins drafted high, I guess Plouffe was a bust for a bit, but even last year he showed some promise, Morales has fallen off the map but that may be more due to injury then anything else. The guys who did struggle were developed by other organizations where it was to late to fix: Gomez and Delmon. Anyone that tries to turn Span's comments into a negative is high IMO, the dude ended up becoming one of the better lead off hitters in the game, it's not like he was oozing with Bryce Harper talent when he came out as well, he was chosen in the same spot as a guy like Hicks, I think if Hicks mirrored Span's career none of us would be real upset.
  3. As far as Saunders go, it would have been nice to have him, but going much more then 1/7 mil on him wouldn't be a very good move IMO. (Yes, Yes I know we have 20 mil left) but there is never a good reason to over pay greatly for mediocrity. It's clear Saunders preferred to play for the Mariners who have (had) a pitchers park and actually appear like they can contend this year. Sure the Twins could have came in and gave him 1 year 9-10 mil to get him in Minnesota but I think that ends up hurting them in the long run as it sort of skews the market prices for pitchers heading into 2014 (if that makes sense?) At this point, let's roll with what we have, I am sure there will be some more waiver pick ups, cuts in spring training that we can bring in as wlel. For some reason when expectations are at an all time low this team defies them, its when expectations are sky high they break our heart. Let's see what we got this year, maybe we can surprise folks, maybe we suck, either way gear up for a nice run in 2014-2016 when guys like Meyer, Arcia, May, Hicks, an co are all coming up.
  4. **** I miss BYTO
  5. 92-70. I want him to ravage me sexually.
  6. Maybe we should sign Brandon Wood as well? Again I would take him I just wouldn't give up any sort of asset for him.
  7. Meh...he can't be worse then what we have but I wouldn't give up anything to get him. Honestly I'd like to see them bring Punto back, the Dodgers really have zero use for him.
  8. Mauer would make a perfect #2 hitter. Also I do tend to think he is to passive at times, there are bad times to take a walk. If there is runner(s) in scoring position and two outs Mauer needs to be swinging IMO
  9. Saunders at 2/15 wouldn't be bad, however it does look worse with Correia also getting 2 years. I'd prefer as much payroll free for 2013. Give him a one year deal, its not like he is suddenly going to turn into an ace and command 20 mil a year next year, if you like what he is doing for the club then try to extend him mid season ala Doumit.
  10. Meh, file this under "who cares" the only thing I really care about are retired numbers. Eddie G was at least a very likeable player for this team for many years.
  11. I still have my doubts about Dozier and think's he is more of a UTIL guy, however if that is the case he still needs to improve quite a bit over 2012, and at the end of the day could be an acceptable stop gap at 2B/SS until we find a real upgrade. As frustrating as the Correia signing was, I must say that my biggest gripe with Ryan this off-season was failing to address the MI situation at all.
  12. I'm guessing its Saunders to a major league contract, and either Pavano or Webb to a minor league deal.
  13. Because Mauer is a really good defensive catcher and the Twins are a better team when he is behind the plate instead of Doumit/Butera. Mauer is still relatively young and in the prime of his career, there is no reason why he can't start 125 games behind the dish. Anything between 100-125 is ideal. You can then DH him another 25-45 games. No real reason to have him play 1st base, if Morneau needs a break they should be putting Parmelee at first.
  14. Christ, I can't wait for the season to start, these threads are a beat down to read through.
  15. In each of the past 5 years Saunders has outperformed his xFIP and FIP by a significant margin, yes xFIP and FIP are useful tools, but they aren't an end all be all, 5 years in a row isn't luck, its a trend. So I am not very worried about the fact that Saunders doesn't strike a lot of guys out or that his HR% isn't the best.
  16. We also got Pelfrey, Worley, May, Meyer, Harden.... Not all will help immediately but the Twins did bring in pitching depth currently, and some real talent for the future.
  17. It's more then two weeks because then you have to start worrying about super 2 status etc. If the kid earns it, play him. If it costs us a few million extra down the road because he lights the world on fire then so be it, that is what we call a "good problem" to have. Now if he was Bryce Harper/A Boras client, I would be signing a different tune.
  18. I really wanted Marcum on this club, but with the contract he got from the Mets it is clear his injury is rather serious/concerning. Plus the Twins have already brought in multiple guys coming off significant injuries this off-season in Worley, Pelfrey and Harden (though he doesn't really count as much) so it makes sense trying to bring in a guy like Saunders instead. I don't get all the Saunders hate, he isn't sexy by any means but he will give you 180+ IP and a slightly above league average ERA. (103 ERA+ career) 4.15 career ERA. He basically becomes what Pavano was for us when healthy (which was pretty good to be honest)
  19. Give me a break Snepp, the Twins certainly have their faults as an org, but keeping home grown talent that they WANT to keep around is not one of them, especially with current payroll/revenues etc. The only one in recent memory was Santana, and that was more or less due to choosing to keep Nathan+Mauer+Morneau over him, and it ended up being the right choice. *If Hicks lights it up, his last couple years of arb would be expensive anyways, *if he lights it up you do like every other team has been doing and you sign him long term after 2 or so good/great seasons in the majors.
  20. Why is everyone so against this? I get the whole service time issue but people need to relax, if Hicks really is the real deal it is highly likely the Twins will lock him up years before he ever hits free agency anyways. If Hicks has a good spring training and earns the job you give him the job, if he struggles, then send him down for a bit, if he kicks ass then it's a great "problem" to have in regards to service time. I'd prefer the youngsters get as many at-bats this year against ML pitching so we can go into 2014 as strong as possible.
  21. This.
  22. I'd much rather have Pelfrey then Jurrjens, best case scenario is that JJ is a decent #5 this year, we have plenty of those.
  23. It's really disappointing they didn't sign him, the Elbow must be a huge issue because numbers wise, Marcum was prob the 3rd or so best pitcher on the market this off-season. At this point, might as well bring in Saunders.
  24. I'm not sure signing a guy with the sole idea of "Well if he does well we will trade him!" is a really sound baseball idea (maybe I am wrong) but at the end of the day, most deadline deals over the past few years haven't been including any real stud packages of prospects, and Marcum even at his best won't command such a return IMO Don't get me wrong, I still think they should sign Marcum, as I have been stating for months, but if you are doing it in hopes of dealing him at the deadline, I think you are at that point better off using that money to pump into scouting, international signings etc. If you want to sign him in order to stablize the rotation and "go for it" then I am 110% in. I look at the contracts signed this off-season and I don't see a ton where I am like "damn the Twins really missed out on that!" Also, I think the Span and Revere trades netted them some of the best talent in the trade market this off-season (besides the Bauer trade- I really, really, wish they would have gone after a Bauer or Johnson)
  25. If you don't have a team that you can build that can conceivably win 90-92 games, then what is the point of spending a bunch of improving them to be a 78-84 win team best case scenario? If Hicks/Gibson/etc come out and look good, then you take a run at things! You don't just waste money on 2-3 year contracts at this point for the sake of trying to compete if everything goes right. I agree that they should have signed some more one year contracts, and I still think they should go after guys like Marcum/Saunders/Kelly Johnson on such deals. If anything, I give Ryan credit for realizing this is most likely a rebuilding year, instead of going out and trying to just make a bunch of bad signings (Correia excluded- but even his contract isn't that bad relatively) Best case scenario is guys like Hendriks/Worley/Diamond/Gibson/Pelfrey/Parmelee/Hicks/Morneau/Plouffe/Dozier etc all preform well out of the gate, THEN you can go out and try to add some more pieces if necessary.
