  1. They’ve actually done a good job of minimizing the damage done by Seager and Semien. So far, the biggest fly in the ointment has been Mitch Garver.
  2. Wallner has been fighting it for a while. BA is down below Correa’s.
  3. The Twins have hit a lot of homers since the break, but also yielded a bunch. Maeda, Ryan and Ober in particular have been dogged by long balls.
  4. Stevenson wears glasses (goggles) when hitting, but not when he's in the field.
  5. A couple other comments about trends--I've been surprised that Rocco has started Wallner against left handers three times in the last couple of weeks while having Kepler on the bench. Max is having his second-best year of his career against left handers and Wallner's numbers against lefties are not great (.532 OPS). Prep for post-season? Speaking of platoon stats--the Twins are up to 21st in team OPS versus left handed pitching and 27th in batting average. The team OPS is .712 vs. lefties, not great but a noticeable improvement.
  6. The next four games will determine a lot about how comfortable the race will be in September. Holding the five-game lead or expanding it should pretty much end the race and let the Twins concentrate on getting ready for October baseball, if the lead shrinks to somewhere between two and four games, there will be work to get done and the collars will get a little tight and if (horror of horrors) the Twins lose all four (and the Guards win them all) it's a whole new ballgame.
  7. I am snickering as I watch the pregame show before the finale of the Twins-Rangers series and they are promoting a Correa surge. He hit a couple of balls hard yesterday including the go-ahead single off Chapman, but he hasn’t sustained a good stretch beyond a few games all year. He’s been lousy in high leverage situations, with RISP and has hit into an incredible amount of GDPs. He has a great post-season history and a clutch reputation. We can hope that something clicks to help the club win the Central and perform well in the “second season”.
  8. I probably agree, but here are some factors: 1) Gallo is the preferred defender at first base. 2) Joey is more likely to “run into one”—always a threat to hit a long ball. 3) Solano is 35 and played more than he ever has as a major leaguer. 4) With all of the Ranger LHP relievers, having Solano available as a pinch hitter for a key spot might be a good strategy.
  9. Castro activated for MAT today. That leaves Kirilloff rehabbing and Buxton pausing at St. Paul. While I'm not certain, I would think Kirilloff should be on a plane to Cleveland sometime today. Due to Taylor's injury, Stevenson will stay on the roster for sure. The next two candidates would be Luplow and Gallo, with Gallo being the one whose position and handedness most matches AK.
  10. Pretty much the same lineup as Friday. A sweep would be sweet. Good to see that Julien is in the lineup, so his injury isn't major.
  11. Another day, another Immaculate Grid. I got ex-Twins in all nine boxes. Particularly proud of finding ex-Twin Gold Glove winners for the Jays, Brewers and Phils
  12. Here’s my Immaculate Grid for today. I figure it’s easy to go with obvious answers so I’m trying get the most obscure players who played for the teams in question and always use ex-Twins.
  13. I certainly agree with you, but the team (officially at least) is choosing to portray this as a minor setback. Rocco specifically said he thinks Buxton is in line to play again this year, as well as saying that Buxton is "day to day". I suppose there is no point in saying that his season is over, even if it is.
  14. The bullpen has been more burnt out several times this year. The problem is the “A” relievers are all down at once. This will put guys like Floro, Funderburk and Winder (perhaps) in high leverage situations. Using all the guys for short stints keeps them available for a second day in a row.
  15. I am pretty sure Duran will be unavailable tomorrow and agree that the Twins should probably limit him, but he's the key guy in the later innings and a five game lead is comfortable, but not safe. Jax, Thielbar and Duran have worked two days in a row and all of them might be unavailable tomorrow. It might be nice for Maeda to give at least six innings.
  16. It looks like the roster decisions are made due to injuries. Castro will be ready tomorrow and my guess is that the Twins will have to put Michael A on the IL. They may need to do something with Julien, if removing him today was due to injury. If they do have to put Julien on the IL, it might open a spot for Austin Martin or perhaps the activation of Kirilloff. The off-season decisions seem to be getting harder. Should the Twins bring back Solano? What about Polanco? It seems that Max Kepler must have played himself into having his option picked up. The emergence of Julien and Royce Lewis seems to render Kyle Farmer expendable, especially if Polanco is brought back. What to do about center field? The Twins are now 5-1 against Texas. Maybe that is the post-season opponent they would want if they win the Central. The Twins have certainly improved against left handed pitching. They scored all nine of their runs today (eight earned) off lefties. I know his numbers don't look great, but Headrick has had a lot of really good quick innings for the Twins. Winder and Funderburk had nice innings today in a close game. Maybe they can continue to see higher leverage situations in the rest of the season.
  17. Any of the three listed could be a huge bonus in the dying days of the season and in October. I think Louie Varland should be considered as well and what about Bailey Ober?
  18. Disagree. The Twins just need to take care of business and they’ll be fine. I’d much rather the Twins came into post-season playing well than counting on others to beat their rivals. The Twins have already had plenty of help in that regard.
  19. Jorge López claimed by the Orioles. The O’s traded him for an All-Star relief pitcher and good pitching prospect and get him back for free 13 months later.
  20. DFAed yesterday.
  21. “Every day players”—Kirilloff has two stints on IL. Polanco has two stints on IL. Lewis has two stints on IL. Kepler has two stints on IL as does Gallo. Buxton has had (guess what) two stints on the IL. Taylor has batted #9 and missed some time with injuries and the catchers have split time. Kepler might qualify if he plays every day down the stretch, but he’s been rested against several lefties.
  22. I don’t know if anything is obvious. While we’d like to know more details about Buxton’s health, we haven’t at this point, so I personally don’t expect much medical information.
  23. As they did with Kirilloff, it appears the Twins tried the least invasive medical procedure first to deal with the medical issue. My first boss called it "parsimony of treatment". What's next? Will he ever be the same? I expect we'll find out more today, but the whole story hasn't been presented yet. The words we haven't seen yet are "chronic" and "degenerative", Given how he hasn't been able to get through the injured knee and hip in over a year, there has to be some threat to his career.
  24. Well all three "suspects" played last night. Luplow got a pinch homer that really changed the game, Stevenson made a nice catch, got an infield hit and stole two bases and Gallo got a walk, stole a base and started a nice 3-6 double play. I much prefer the 6-5 Gallo at first base over the 5-8 Solano on defense, but Kirilloff is a suitable first baseman and will hit RBI hits more than once a month. If I'm GM (thank goodness I'm not), Gallo gets a DFA when AK is activated. It sounds like Castro will be activated tomorrow and that will be the tough call. With Buxton's return no longer on the horizon, having Stevenson to man center field and possibly be used as a pinch runner is probably more valuable than Gallo's competence at first and the threat of him hitting a 450-ft. homer. With Buxton out indefinitely, the rotating DH system will probably continue. Lewis DHing occasionally with Farmer at third, Julien or Polanoco DHing with the other playing second against right handers and maybe Jeffers in the DH role if he starts hitting again.
