  1. Good for SWR. He's getting his chance at the relatively tender age of 23. I like his pitch mix and I think the added velo is very helpful.
  2. Shortstop is the far more important defensive position. The superior defender at short should play there. The Twins think that is Castro.
  3. Check it out—Twins pitchers have struck out more batters than than Twins hitters have struck out.
  4. It was widely reported that the Twins were shopping Farmer in the off season. Nobody wanted him as a regular shortstop and the salary is too high for a utility infielder. Even if he brings his offensive numbers up to normal, there really isn’t trade market for him.
  5. Yeah, once or twice a week is what a short side of a platoon should get. That’s been the plan for Farmer since the start of spring training, but the current injuries to Lewis and Correa have given him a bit more run. That Willi Castro is the preferred option at shortstop makes me question the wisdom of retaining Farmer at $6M+, whether he hitting .250 or .067. Farmer has consistently hit left handed pitching much better, so if he’s going to play twice a week, it should be against lefties.
  6. I think it’s a bum rap to call Sanó lazy or to accuse him of being out of shape. Sanó worked hard, but the holes are there—he misses way too many pitches in the zone and despite a big arm, he’s never going to be a plus fielder. He’s 31 now or soon and playing lighter makes sense from an injury avoidance point of view and probably adds a bit to his defensive range. The “new” Miguel Sanó is worth keeping around, but I don’t see another Big Papi situation. Good luck to him starting on Monday. I’m sure he’ll be laser focused this weekend.
  7. Honestly I’m not sure if Farmer is cooked or not. I wasn’t in favor of retaining him over the off season and I speculated that Willi should/would be the guy to fill in for a Correa injury. Farmer has been brutal, but he’s on the team and four weeks is a really short leash for a solid pro with six years in the big leagues.
  8. It's still very early, but the Twins currently have a better OPS vs. left handed pitching (.656 vs. right, .720 vs. left).
  9. It's easy for us to sit in our easy chairs and say "bench Farmer" or bench Santana. Kyle Farmer has a history of being a well-above average hitter against left handed pitching. Do you give up on him before April is over? The Twins aren't going to release him and he can't be sent to the minors. His best chance to get going is to face left handed pitching and he'll probably get three more shots at it in the next four days.
  10. Keep that suitcase packed Michael! Michael Tonkin was claimed by the Yankees. Since the end of the '23 season, Tonkin has been non-tendered by the Braves, signed by the Mets (made the Opening Day roster), DFA'd by the Mets, claimed by the Twins, DFA'd by the Twins, claimed by the Mets, DFA'd by the Mets, and claimed by the Yankees. He will have pitched for three teams by the end of April.
  11. They face lefties in three of their next four games. One start apiece makes pretty good sense, maybe two. I don't see Kirilloff getting a start against a lefty. He's been in a pretty long snag. Sandoval has severe platoon splits so far this year. OPS against lefties .333, righties .826. Career his OPS against lefties is .587 and righties is .734.
  12. Sandoval is a lefty. I predict one or two LH batters get the start against him, though.
  13. It wouldn't surprise me if Boushley got some starts for the Twins. He's put up pretty good numbers in the minors.
  14. Five wins in the next seven (against 3-21 WSox and 10-15 Angels) would lift the Twins to .500. They will face a bunch of left handed pitching (two of three starters for the Angels and Crochet again for the Sox) so the right handed platoon will be called on. Margot, Santana and Farmer will have opportunities to break out of it. Less play for Larnach and Kirilloff for sure and it wouldn't surprise me if Kepler and Julien get a start or two vs. a lefty.
  15. Baldelli and the coaching staff have seen these players more than anyone. I think it is very significant that Austin Martin is the center fielder when Buxton isn't out there and that Willi Castro is the shortstop with Correa out. IIRC, the sole reason for Martin's negative ratings as a defender come from his first start in center on Easter Sunday. Balls evaded him in front, behind and to the sides as the Royals mashed Bailey Ober. If Margot has lost two feet of sprint speed in one year, he goes from a plus defender to average. His hitting hasn't been good enough to get a regular job ever and if he's only an average fielder, it would appear he never will. Finally, if the Twins thought Martin was superior to Margot in center and that Willi Castro was their best option to back up Correa, why bring back Farmer and acquire Margot?
  16. Talking about disappointing veterans would have to start with Farmer and Santana. Farmer and Santana would both have to have over 100 at-bats at their lifetime average to get to the Mendoza Line for the season.
  17. Lots of struggling hitters in the Twins' lineup. Here's how they've done today; Castro 2-4 HR & 2B, Vázquez 3-4, Margot 2-5 2B. Now the bad news: Farmer 0-4 (3 Ks & GDP), Santana 0-4, 1 BB
  18. Yeah, most hitters are off to a bad start, but some will rebound. Tough to get a competitive lineup out there when so many are below the Mendoza Line.
  19. Every position player is going to play at least as the short side of a platoon. We haven’t seen many lefty starters lately so it figures we will see all the right handed hitters.
  20. López was off yesterday. He couldn't throw anything for a strike except the fastball and he didn't get the chases he usually gets. The drop in velocity might just be a blip, but until he's back on the mound, I'll have some concern. Kirilloff has tailed off after a really good start and the four Ks were concerning, but he got the big hit. I would like to see him go on another tear and get the BA back to .300 and the OPS back over .900. He hasn't hit an opposite field homer yet this year and he's pulled most everything. Has there been a change in his approach?
  21. Or he could lose the DH and put Kirilloff at first. I think in one of the recent telecasts, Provus quoted Rocco as saying that Martin would be an option at third, but behind Farmer, Miranda and Castro. If Martin isn't trying to steal a base, I think it is defensible to not pinch run until Smooth got to third base. Third base with one out would likely have the contact play on for ground balls and the extra step or two that Martin might provide could be the difference between out and safe. Pretty much the same thing on a fly ball and with the second out being recorded, sending the runner on a 50-50 play or less is likely.
