    Major league players should be able to make the play that Santana missed in the ninth inning. Not fair to Jax to call that a hit. Things evened out with the deflection that ended the game.

    Disagree. Miranda can play first and third and he's a RH hitter. At this point, he's better and more valuable to the team than either Austin Martin or Alex Kirilloff (two of my favorite players BTW). He and Larnach have earned spots on the active roster for now, even if all the position players are healthy. The versatility of Willi Castro makes it more than possible to keep Miranda instead of either Martin or Kirilloff. Lewis is on another level than Miranda IMHO. Put him at third and let him play. I'd love to see Royce be in the lineup 95% of the time after his return.

    Yes! Tied with Guards in the loss column and ahead of KC by percentage points. I don't know if there will be a real race for the Central yet, but it seems a lot more possible now than it did at the beginning of the season. Gausman has been very good for the Jays, but the Twins have had very good success against him.

    Kirilloff hasn't looked like the same hitter for the last month. He had a nice start after a good spring training, but has faded considerably. I guess he is in the "adjustments to the adjustments" stage unless there is an underlying injury. In another thread, it has been stated that he is a candidate to be optioned when Lewis and Buxton are added back to the active roster. While I count myself as an Alex Kirilloff fan, that seems accurate.

    Both Miranda and Larnach have grabbed their opportunities and run with them. Good for them. If Lewis and Buxton were activated tomorrow, the obvious choices for option would be Kirilloff and Martin. It's pretty hard to see where things will be in a week or so when Buck is supposed to be ready and impossible to see where things will be by the first of June, Lewis' original timeline for activation. Santana and Margot haven't played up to the investment in them so far, but it's hard to imagine either of them being cut loose at this point.

    How far can Matthews advance in one year? He has to be advancing on prospect lists as well, given his performance.

    This clinched a winning homestand against two pretty good teams. 5-2 would more than meet expectations IMHO.

    Pablo needs to go deep into the game. Funderburk, Sands, Jackson and Okert don't inspire a lot of confidence. I'm sure Jax is down and I don't know if Rocco will want to use Durán less than 24 hours after throwing 18 pitches.

    They’re saying he had a setback with his knee, hence another MRI. At this point, I’ll believe Topa is going to help this bullpen when he’s activated and not before.

    Ober only going 5 set up the bullpen meltdown. It’s not his fault really, but in a similar situation he went seven innings (against the Angels?). Optimally, Jackson shouldn’t have been used and later Alcalá wouldn’t have been used for more than one inning. It wouldn’t surprise me if staff changes are made.

    Tough outing for MaeKen. The Phillies also hammered Berríos.

    The Twins will face good arms in all four games. Hancock has been the most inconsistent, with his numbers looking pedestrian despite three outstanding starts in a row in April.

    It was the go-ahead run. Vázquez' offense hasn't come around, but he's been a better defensive catcher this year (wasn't bad last year).

    I think the good outings by SWR give him slack in the event he struggles. His start against the White Sox wasn't very good at all, but he bounced back with the best start of his (brief) career. You (and many here at TD) may or may not remember that Varland had a nice run of starts in 2023, so there are no guarantees but each solid outing gives evidence that SWR can more than survive in the majors.

    SWR looked very hittable against a poor White Sox lineup in his last outing, but then came out with a gem against the Mariners. He got very few swings and misses against the Sox, but plenty against the Ms. I guess we can expect some inconsistency from every starter. Correa had the big hits and Kepler continued to contribute. Castillo is a fine pitcher and a lot of teams are going to look bad against him. Getting the win against the other team's ace is huge.

    We've invented Quality Starts to credit pitching with "good" outings. There also is a Game Score for the starter's performance--Castillo had 60, SWR had 77. Wins have been deemphasized in evaluating starters and justly so. This is not a hobby horse that I want to ride.

    Hindsight is 20-20. Polanco’s single off his thumbs was a bloop. Haniger hit the ball hard, but on the ground, and could have just as easily been a 6-4-3 DP. Jax did a nice job limiting the damage after that. I hope SWR gets a chance to pitch the seventh soon and with a bigger cushion. I was screaming (in my head) to hit for Vázquez and Margot and they both came through. The bullpen use worked great and sample sizes are too small to declare Thielbar washed up. In summary, I think it’s really funny to roast the manager on a game they won. I guess they didn’t win properly.

    Kirilloff hasn’t been hitting, so Rocco moves him to #3 in the order. Julien hasn’t been hitting, so he moves to lead off and Margot hasn’t been doing much of anything well, so he starts in center field. And some of you say Rocco doesn’t play hunches.

    Miranda's exit velocity and line drive numbers are pretty low. I think he swings and makes contact on too many "pitcher's pitches" and makes weak contact quite often. I thought his BABiP would be very high this year (SSS), but it is pretty much normal (.314). I'm not ready to call him a cornerstone of the franchise, but his status is much better than it was 10 months ago.

    If he shows he's a better hitter than Kirilloff and Santana, José should continue to have a big role for the Twins, even after Royce Lewis returns. So far this year, Miranda has shown himself to be at least adequate at third base, which increases his value, especially since Lewis hasn't managed to stay on the field.

    I suppose, somewhat. Hernandez was wrong on the check swing call, but it's only a big deal because of Angel's miserable reputation. It was not the worst call of the game. Alcalá has had far too many outings where he throws 15-20 excellent pitches and two or three batting practice fastballs or hung breaking balls for me to trust him. Maybe it's all my perception, but he isn't a guy I trust.

    The Arraez trade probably saved ex-Twin Nick Gordon from being DFA'd. Gordon has struggled so far this season and was no longer starting in left field, even against right handed pitching. He now will get a shot to have playing time at second base.

    The thing is that no one is being benched so that Willi is in the lineup. Injuries and platoon splits give Castro the chance to play almost every day and in the maybe 10% of games that he might not start, he can come off the bench to perhaps steal a base or be a defensive replacement. According to BBRef, Willi Castro is at 1.0 WAR for the current season. Multiply that time five and and he is a 5 WAR player without a permanent home. Honestly, I don't expect Castro to keep hitting like he has (and he's had ample BABiP luck), but it is possible that he adds to his value more defensively and on the bases in the remaining 4/5 of the season. My thought with Castro was that he made gigantic strides as a 26-year old. What if he again gets better in this, his age 27 season? Someone as versatile as he is, without huge platoon splits could be very valuable to the Twins or any other team.
