The only guy I disagree with is ASlegers. I do not see much upside. I see Chris Young at BEST.- 34 replies

I am a little surprised to hear this from "mike wants wins" as I would think getting the best players on the field is the primary goal, regardless of options the player(s) has left. To sacrifice a more proven reliever so we can have Tonkin and Darnell for example is not, IMO, the best way to build a bullpen. If this were 2016 and we had Reed and Burdi ready to go then signing veteran in the 2015 offseason may not be necessary. Right now, our bullpen isn't very good and the guys coming up are unproven.
-
I am in the minority it sounds like but I AM in favor of going the FA route to help bolster the bullpen. There are not a lot of FA starters that the Twins will be pursuing, so why not help the bullpen? Here is my plan: Long man - Pino - replaces Swarzak RP - Darnell (LH) - replaces Duensing RP - Fien RP - Tonkin RP - Pelfrey - replaces Burton RP - Andrew Miller (FA signing) CL - Perkins Reasoning for Miller: The Twins can let Duensing, Swarzak, and Burton go and have capable replacements for them (Darnell unknown). The savings is more than enough to invest into a LIGHTS OUT type of relief pitcher. Since switching to a relief role in 2012, he has had ERA+ marks of 127, 158, & 202! His K/9 keeps getting better too. 2012 - 11.4; 2013 - 14.1; 2014 - 14.8! While this mark climbs, his WHIP and BB/9 keeps dropping. He is basically the present version of the Nick Burdi we are hoping to get someday.

Where Does Pelfrey Fit In?
Siehbiscuit replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Strongly agree with the Pelfrey move to the pen idea. I wouldn't care if Meyer started next year and pitched out of the pen for all of April and maybe into May before he and Pelfrey swapped roles. This would get Meyer some lower leverage experience and keep his innings limit under control early. Pelfrey has always had velocity, why not use it out of the pen vs just DFA'ing him? Most great RP's were once failed starters. He has the tools. -
I agree with the play the young guys strategy. Posters continue to say, "Player X would bat in teh 8 hole on a playoff team" or "Player Z wouldn't be in the rotation on a playoff team." These statements fits to nearly our entire team! Pitching: Nolasco: was banged up and tried to tough it out and was poor. He deserves another shot based on his career not just last year. Gibson: Should not be untouchable. He had moments, but if a guy like Meyer or May look outstanding in ST give them the ball! The best players need to be pitching. Hughes: in the rotation. Period. Milone, Johnson, Pino other AAAA, low-upside types: These are the guys that are organizational filler. Millone has proven somewhat effective at the MLB level, but his ceiling is lower than even Gibson's. I don't necessarily believe that we should move Vargas or Arcia. Vargas has looked great, but he could start in AAA again (I doubt he will). I believe if Arcia develops as a prospect the way we all thought he would, his offensive upside outweighs the defensive low side. Vargas can flat out hit and thats why we have the DH. I don't hear the ChiSox complaining about Frank Thomas' defense back in the day or Abreu's now. Their offense offsets their defense liabilities. Better pitching and the HIGH upside ptching should be pitching. Worst case, throw 'em in the bullpen St. Louis style.

So ... That Happened
Siehbiscuit commented on Twins Fan From Afar's blog entry in Blog Twins Fan From Afar
Your coverage is a loss to us all! -
The FIP vs ERA difference has a lot to do with the defense but also a lot of 'pitch to contact'-type of pitchers. How does May's numbers differ? He strikes a ton of guys out, but he's also pitched like crap! When all of a sudden May or Nolasco are pitching brilliantly we congratulate the defense. Last night, Nolasco was great. Perkins comes in and the defense didn't all of a sudden get bad. He pitched poorly and got hit all over the place. This game will always be about pitching. I'd take Nelson Cruz, Arcia and even Santana or a bad CF like Matt Kemp as my everyday OF if I could have Kershaw. Bad defense COMBINED with bad pitching is what we have had for at least 4 years. An OF alignment of Alex Gordon, Carlos Gomez and ??? Adam Jones or Jayson Heyward wouldn't change the fact that our pitchers still get hit hard. Some runs would be saved, but not enough to change the win column significantly. Great pitching can.

Polanco may be an unknown, but IF the Twins could get a High A to AA pitcher (think Alex Meyer trade) the Twins do have Escobar and Santana to play 2B and SS. Getting talent is ALWAYS important and if the Twins want to pursue pitching via this method, then I am on board. I value pitching in both quantity and quality above all else. If they went this way I would be okay. The potential for a frontline starter is worth, IMO, the dropoff of a Dozier to Escobar/Santana dropoff. Dozier is going to need to prove his ability to hit off-speed stuff consistently before HR's show up again. See the fangraphs article referenced above. Dozier feasted on fastballs over the last 18 months and pitchers have adjusted. Its his turn now. If he can, he has the potential to be a top5-8 2B in all of baseball. Dozier is essential as a building block, either as a player or as a very tradeable asset.

I am 100% being serious here! Why not Torii Hunter on a final contract/swan song? This is different than the Kubel/Bartlett reunion in that he can still play. He would solve a couple problems for us: corner OF defense, veteran leadership and a solid bat in the lineup. The durability is not a major issue and he can mentor guys like Hicks, Buxton and Santana (and hopefully Arcia will pick up a thing or to about playing OF defense from him). He has 17 HR's each of the last two seasons and has been on winning ball teams the last few years, when the rest of team hasn't. He has never been one to stay quiet and I personally would like to see a veteran demand success and passion from his teammates. One year deal $4-6M?

I can't disagree what most of you are saying (minus the move Mauer to the OF talk), but is it oversimplifying to think that even with Gold Glovers at EVERY position our pitching staff would still give up a ton of hits? Our pitchers, even those that are the "groundball specialists" don't induce enough "weak" contact. When Gibson is on, like the June starts, the defense behind him all of a sudden looked good. It's not a coincedence. Bad defense is magnified by bad pitching. Poorly hit balls aren't the ones fans should worry about our OF screwing up. Its the plodding to the gaps and being able to actually make a play on something sharply hit that leads to disaster. A guy like Deduno was passed over by EVERY team in the league numerous times, but the Twins threw him out there time after time. Walks have little to do with the defense (although, more confidence in your defene might prevent some nibbling). Kevin Correia had to be overpaid to come here, no one wanted him when he could go anywhere. The bottomline is that our lineup isn't the problem. Or defense isn't THE problem, but could improve. The problem is our pitch to contact pitchers are pitching to HARD contact. Not the defense.
-
The 29th out of 30 metric isn't all on the defense. No one here is questioning an outfield of Willingham, Hicks and Arcia (Parmalee, Colabello, Santana too) is bad. But is there a stat (I'm sure their is) that shows batted ball speed? The balls that are hit off of our pitchers seem to be squared up more than other team's pitchers. What I'm saying is is strikeouts lower total chances, but good pitchers make the hitters hit their pitch. It may be beaten into the ground or a lazy pop fly. Bad pitching gives up sceaming liners all over the place (See most Nolasco starts). There is a reason 5 tool players are hard to find. They are rare. Either they can't hit or they struggle to field. Ben Revere could hit sans the power, but all we cared about here was the lack of arm. We aren't unhitching our wagon to Arcia or any of our cheap young players. We NEED better pitching. That is the best way to help our poor defensive players. Give them less opportunities to screw up and make the balls in play more routine.

Could Mientkiewicz Be The Next Twins Manager?
Siehbiscuit replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If I start spitting in my office the way players do in theirs (in the field, in the batter's box, on the mound) should they be fired. I probably should stop the snot rockets too! Sports, ISN'T the real world. Throwing baseballs at a defenseless batter is immature, but its also an acceptable practice. Managers screaming at the authority figure from one inch away isn't "real world." Sports and its behaviors are in a different category, so i recommend the "holier than thou" approach stop. -
Article: Trade Candidate: Kevin Correia
Siehbiscuit replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Correia needs to go for nothing more than fan's psyche! May and Meyer will likely not be instantly better than Correia, but it signals a glimpse at his potential and even if/when they fail, it will have some "WOW" moments of 97-99 mph heat and maybe even a game or two of double digit K's to go along with the clunker or two they throw. Correia provides no hope to this fan base. May and Meyer at least gives us something to buy a ticket or watch on TV: HOPE! -
Twins Suzuki far apart on extension
Siehbiscuit replied to gunnarthor's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
I wont get all technical and spew a bunch of numbers at everyone, but look at Kyle Gibson. As a groundball inducing pitcher, he greatly struggled with Mauer catching because Mauer was terrible at getting the "low" strike called. Has Gibson improved? Absolutely. Could NOT having a 6'6 catcher behind the plate be benefiting Gibson? These are the small things that are hard to calculate? Mauer's been heralded as a good-to-great catcher (blocking, throwing, game calling, etc) but getting the RIGHT guy for our staff is what matters. Does Pinto's bat outweigh the potential lack of confidence the staff may have in him blocking their pitches in the dirt. Great pitching staffs frequently use out pitches that may bounce. As the Twins start going to more power arms (fastball/slider combos of Meyer, May, Berrios and Stewart) is Pinto the guy that will be/should catching them? Personally, I'd rather have all defense, bad offense (Butera) if the staff could pitch to its strengths and actually throw an out pitch in the dirt from time to time. The Rays have done this with Jose Molina. He blocks EVERYTHING (it helps he is as wide as a school bus). Offense vs. defense, take the positional WAR out of it. Does his defensive contributions, game-calling equate to more WINS because he makes the staff that much more effective or is it worth sacrificing the pitching quality for more offense? -
I agree with you Seth. Having a good veteran around the younger kids (prospect or not) gives them some leadership that is different from their coaches. These types can teach the younger players how to be a professional, encourage through adversity, etc. Sometimes hearing correction or leadership from a peer carries as much or more than from a coach. Coaches are supposed to talk "coach-speak," a player that does, chooses to.

Trade opportunities -players dropping like flies
Siehbiscuit replied to TKGuy's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Why does no one mention moving Perkins. On a potential 85-90 loss team, couldn't Fien or someone else be given a shot to be the closer? This was hashed out last year as well, but other than Perkins MN ties, why not consider moving a great closer? If Burdi is available next year or even 2016 to take the role, is it worth getting a good to great haul for a multiple time All-Star closer? The trades of Dozier (age 27), Perkins (31) and Suzuki (31) could add a couple top 25 types and 3-4 more top 100 type prospects. -

Siehbiscuit replied to TKGuy's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Don't trade just for the sake of trading. Dozier isn't elite, but he is definitely in the next tier. If Dozier can mantain his level of play into next year this conversation will fit the Twins better. He is still under control till 2018, so even small market teams that are contending would be options. More importantly, the guys like Rosario, Polanco and Santana are closer to becoming everyday options at the MLB level. The Twins could do this now and slide Escobar to 2nd base (Santana at SS) and survive. But whether its now or next, 2nd basemen of Dozier's caliber are rare and will demand a nice haul of prospects. -
Hicks off DL, Optioned to New Britain
Siehbiscuit replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Thyros I really wish there was a down vote option for your comments. Your "smartest guy in the room" routine is unbelievably obnoxious. -
If Dunn dropped a bunt down successfully and reached base at a .600 clip from bunting, I still don't think teams would change its approach. Dunn IS dangerous because he has about as much raw power as any one in the game. Even though he strikes out a TON, he also still gets walked a lot. The fear is the long ball and that is the ONLY TOOL he has. If the ChiSox want him bunting when there is a shift, there's no reason he should even be in the lineup. His skill is hitting for power. Kubel???? No excuse for it. He can't hit anything!

I think there is a difference between being "athletic" and havng "fluidity/(insert whatever adjective you want here). I have spent 11 years coaching HS and college basketball and sometimes the best athletes aren't always the best players, because their mind isn't at rest. They don't always "move" the best because they lack the confidence (gained by reps) compare to someone who may have less athleticism but gets "it." Mauer is athletic (not like Trout or Santana), and we see it in glimpses. He has excellent hand-eye coordination too. BUT, IMO playing 1st does seem to be "natural" to him yet. He is having to re-program his entire baseball career mindset. All of his baseball instincts are as a catcher. I think he will be very good given time.

Review Gardenhire's job so far this year
Siehbiscuit replied to Brandon's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
There aren't two that aren' going to be a part of the future. Kepler may be the only one. The problem isn't the prospects on the 40, but the "veterans" on it that have no place on ANYONE's 40 man. Deduno and Correia are blocking younger guys (Darnell, May & Meyer). -
I am still in the camp of bringing May and Meyer up and putting them in medium to low leverage situations out of the bullpen a la the Cardinals. It saves innings on their arms and they can get a taste of the big show. Guys like Burton and Guerrier are a dime a dozen. I would think even Correia has more value than they do. If Correia is awful move him to the bullpen (or DFA eventually) and promote May or Meyer to the rotation. Meyer still isn't even on the 40-man yet.

Gardenhire's next target. Is it Pinto?
Siehbiscuit replied to jorgenswest's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Actually, send Pinto to AAA and let him play everyday. Suzuki is playing well and hopefully he can maintain. I'm all for versatility, but being bad or average at a lot of things doesn't make you valuable (Herrmann). Call up a good defensive catcher to be a backup and only a back up catcher. That way Gardy doesn't have to even think about his lineup card, but can just get some consistency in it. Fryer would be fine. If something happens to Suzuki, call up Pinto to be the everyday guy. -
