  1. I agree with you on the command vs control issue. BUT, this guy has a .125 BAA and isn't walking people at a terrible rate. 100mph heat is hard to hit period. There is less need to paint the corners when nearly every heater is over 97! Fast fastballs can even cut the plate in half and its harder to hit than a Correia 88mph "heater" on the black. Fast is still fast. His numbers DO support this (low walks, low BAA). You can't hit what you can't see.
  2. I don't get all the "hate" for Nick Gordon. There are some very reputable analysts/scouts that have him as a top 3 prospect. I look at the tools and if he develops to the projections, I see the potential ceiling of Barry Larkin and a floor of a healthy version of Rafael Furcal. The biggest difference is the hit tool and how much it develops. Shortstops that hit for power (Tulo, HanRam, ARod) are generational type players, but even then HanRam wasn't a very good defender at SS. Gordon looks to be the pre-ARod era SS (less Cal Ripken) and more like Larkin. This kid looks like a great player.
  3. The Pitching depth is looking so much better in both the bullpen and the rotation at the upper levels. Ryan Pressly was pretty decent last year with the Twins and this year at Rochester there are three or four guys doing equal if not better than he is (and he is having a very good season). Bullpen depth is excellent. Why is Burton still on the roster?
  4. I have a hard time seeing Sano on the big league roster at this time next year. He will have missed a year and will likely start the year in AA again. He may need a month to get his feet wet and then a likely promotion to AAA. Plouffe is a capable placeholder and there are enough OF's for Plouffe to stay at 3B. Rosario, imo, is more likely to be on the big league team (in CF) than Buxton next year. Buxton has missed essentially the same amount of time as Rosario and Rosario has already had some success at the AA level. IF Hicks gets his plug pulled, Rosario could be the starting CF in early 2015. C- Pinto (starter), FA veteran (Suzuki will re-sign for more elsewhere) 1B- Mauer, Parmelee 2B- Dozier 3B- Plouffe (Sano if he DOMINATES AA) SS- Escobar, Santana LF- Rosario CF- Hicks or Rosario (Buxton, maybe) RF- Arcia DH-Vargas or Parmalee
  5. Dozier will absolutely make it, as will Perkins. Suzuki is not going to happen. The All-Star game is about baseball trying to market its product as much as it is about the game. Joe Mauer WILL be on the team. Considering the game has a DH, his position is irrelevant. He will make it this year based on his body of work and that the game is played in MN. Politics will get him in.
  6. According to an article on the MN Twins site, Hicks started switchi-hitting at age 11.
  7. Next year's starting OF will be Arcia in LF (.815 OPS), Hicks in CF (.735 OPS), Parmelee in RF (OPS .800). Buxton won't be up unless he absolutely FORCES his way up. If he does, Arcia, Parmelee and Mauer rotate at DH and Hicks moves to RF.
  8. :s-instagib: The first guy is this thread!
  9. I'm not just picking on you Brock, but to those that think Hicks in RF provides ANY value are going to be sadly disappointed (if they can be even more disappointed). Hicks was supposed to be Gomez-lite defensively in CF and he has proven to be worse that both Span and Revere (although Hick's arm is great). BUT he will never produce offensively enough to warrant being in a corner position. I know NEVER is a really strong word, but his hit tool is just not good enough. I would rather them stash a good-hitting guy like Vargas out there and deal with bad defense than Hicks be our RF. At his ceiling, he MIGHT be Nick Markakis. He will be traded by year 2016 after Buxton is firmly established.
  10. I'd be willing to walk away. He is playing great, but Pinto is the future. If he wanted another year at $5 million, I'd be okay. This still is Kurt Suzuki.
  11. One thing I LOVE about Polanco is his ability to compartmentalize his defensive struggles from hindering his offense. I am sure he is mentally tough, but I would be willing to bet Dougie M's influence is VERY positive and is encouraging him through his struggles (not many as of late). Gardy would have thrown him under the bus numerous times by now.
  12. Escobar is a little too much of a free-swinger for Gardy to put him in the leadoff spot.
  13. You win the internet today!!
  14. I was right there with you. The upside is that the Twins are flirting with .500 with guys like Hicks and Florimon providing TONS of empty at bats. Arcia, thought to be a major cog in our offense, has barely played. Gibson has had many "rookie" looking moments, but he has also looked like a guy that will continue to improve and can be a part of the rotation in the future. Polanco, Buxton and Sano will still be a foundation to be built upon with veterans like Dozier and Plouffe.
  15. Colabello was everyone's hero in April and now instead of him having couple of days off to clear his head and maybe get back to some fundamentals in the cage, we need to send him to Rochester. Don't all players go through slumps? There is nothing for Colabello to do at Rochester (except be the best hitter in that league again!). He may need a break from the lineup, but sending people up and down isn't always the best solution.
  16. There are SO many people and numerous threads that have exclaimed how they are and were sick of guys like Parmalee, Willingham, Kubel, Bartlett, Colabello, Florimon, even some pre-season Plouffe. They have been clamoring and saying "If we aren't going to win, let the young guys figure it out." Parmalee continually got yo-yo'd and never got consistent at-bats, like Plouffe and Dozier did. They fought through. We can't have our cake and eat it too! I love Hicks' potential, but the kid GREATLY struggles to make contact. He is the BEST defensive OF we have, and at age 23-24 let him struggle. Maybe it "clicks" for him in June or July and we start seeing him become the player we hoped he would. Either we believe in him or we don't. What's the alternative? Danny Santana in CF? Doesn't he have enough learning to do at SS? Let Hicks play and let's hope Bruno can recesitate his bat.
  17. I understand both points of view, but the "CEO of baseball decisions" or each team's GM, is not involved in these unimportant tasks, such as diamond dust. Each minor league affiliate is independently owned and operated. The Twins organization does nothing but send players to the affiliates. The GM's job is all about the personnel. Yes, he needs to manage a budget and the like, but his ultimate job is building rosters. He constructs (not by himself, but it is ultimately his decision) and manages rosters at all levels. Whether it is the draft, FA, international scouting, waivers, Rule 5, etc, any way to acquire players is on the GM. This is not over-simplifying, this IS his duty. He constructs and manages the rosters. Again, he surely has people that help and advise him (more eyes, the better), but this is his job. The Twins scout very well, but roster construction at the MLB level has been a chronic problem.
  18. IMO, this ENTIRE issue is because of poor CF depth and Gardy's desire to carry a 3rd catcher. Suzuki is not a part of the future here. Pinto will be. Pinto needs to catch more and not waste a roster spot because we want his bat in the lineup. Suzuki's bat has been a pleasant surprise, but he will regress. If Pinto needs AB's play him at catcher. Guys like Arcia, Colabello, Willingham can be DH. Unfortunately, Kubel HAS to be in the OF, because all these other guys suck out there. Hicks in CF when healthy. Fuld as the 4th OF. With Herrmann gone (why is he even on the 40 man? He provides nothing: can't hit and doesn't catch when he is here). Bring up Parmalee and play the guys that have the hot bat. Lastly, dump Guerrier and go back to a 12 man staff. He brings NOTHING that a younger couldn't. He's not even worth anything on the trade market. Silly signing.
  19. I have stated this numerous times here and elsewhere: Terry Ryan is a great scout and evaluates prospects with the best in the business. When it comes to assembling a club at the MLB level he is VERY average. Antony may be calling the shots now, maybe not, but assembling a MLB club is definitely an issue in this organization.
  20. Kubel in LF Hicks in CF (obviously when he gets healthy). This is his year to see if he can be a MLB centerfielder. KLaw says the bat will "never play in a corner spot." He is future trade bait for when Buxton arrives. RF - Arcia or even Parmalee (get a guy like Hermmann of the 40 man).
  21. Don't forget about the Suzuki Effect! There was a pre-season article here on TD about his propensity to call more fastballs than other catchers. He may be over-emphasizing the fastball for Nolasco, but it could be the reason Gibson and Hughes are having success. Just a thought.
  22. 25 MAN ROSTER: (13 position players) C- Suzuki, Pinto (Escobar is the emergency catcher) - Split games evenly. Pinto's bat is good, but are we sure it is better than Colabello, Parmalee or Arcia's to have him be the DH and not one of them? 1B- Mauer & Colabello 2B-Dozier 3B-Plouffe SS-Escobar, Florimon (send Santana back to AAA) - The everyday job needs to go to Escobar. LF - Kubel & Arcia CF - Hicks & Fuld - Hicks needs to play everyday and Fuld is not a part of the future. Hicks still can be (although its painful to watch). RF - Parmalee & Colabello - this could be a straight platoon or just riding the "hot hand." Hitters go on streaks. Ride 'em while their hot, sit 'em when they're not. DH - Revolving door of matchups and who is hitting well. Pinto has got to be a better hitter to get the AB's here. If its a RH on the mound, there's no reason that Kubel, Arcia and Parmalee can't/should't all be in the lineup. SP- Nolasco, Hughes, Correia, Deduno & Gibson (5) RP - Theibar, Duensing, Swarzak, Fien, Tonkin, Burton (6) CP - Perkins (12 pitchers)
  23. This is essentially the same "slump" that Pinto is in right now!?
  24. I would love to see the Vikes trade down far enough to add two first rounders! I'd rove to see them get Shazier, if they do not go for Mosely. He is INCREDIBLY talented and athletic. I also prefer Bortles to Bridgewater. Nice mock.
  25. Dozier's ability to get on base and then run the bases is the reason he is in the 1 spot. Just because he is doing his job REALLY well doesn't mean we need to move him. His HR's are a bonus. Plouffe is hitting a ton of doubles, but if he, Colabello, Kubel and/or Pinto were hitting 6-8 HR's each we wouldn't be concerned about moving Dozier. We should have higher expectations for our 3-5 hitters.
