  1. I do not come to this site expecting dirty talk. Good day, sir.
  2. Felix was called in a day early to start against Birmingham, and it didn't go too well. Five hits and three walks in 4.2 innings, and an unearned run to go with three earnies. He did register 6 strikeouts. Chattanooga scored just enough by the seventh inning to take him off the hook, but Glen Perkins promptly surrendered a couple of runs to take the loss. It wound up 7-4. Bleh. Friday the 13th came on Sunday this month.
  3. OK, A+ and AA are now covered. What about AA-? WE NEED A CLARIFICATION ON THE CLARIFICATION
  4. Slegers started a new winning streak on Saturday, pitching 7 1/3 innings in a 3-2 Red Wings victory over the Norfolk Tides. He gave up 8 hits and no walks while striking out 6. Mason Melotakis took over with a runner on first and went the rest of the way without incident for the save. Aaron's AAA season ERA now stands at 3.18.
  5. I thought that's what we were watching in right field.
  6. Way too many people believe Trump's seemingly throw-away line about violence on "many" sides. They have bought into the media not showing the leftist violence.
  7. <not_sure_if_serious.jpg> But seriously, I have always found it interesting that baseball is full of averages (means) like BA and ERA, but statisticians in other walks of life use additional measures like variance or root-mean-square (not to mention kew and skurtosis etc) to answer exactly the question we're asking here. If pitchers always pitched 9 innings, then we could easily distinguish two 4.00 ERA pitchers, one who always pitches 4-run complete games, the other who alternates between shutouts and 8-run debacles - one has a RMS of 0 while the other has 4. (Which pitcher I'd rather have depends, perhaps on whether my offense averages more like 3 runs a game or 5, but the information seems worth having in its own right.) But I don't even know what computation to suggest for the actual case where starters pitch unequal numbers of innings from one game to the next, and where a 0.1 inning disaster by a reliever is to be weighed against several clean outings of exactly 1 inning each. Is Belisle's performance typical or not? I don't know of a handy dandy measure anyone's ever come up with for that. My own view would be to move away from ERA, and toward OPS-against, as a starting point for pitching effectiveness. Might have a better shot at comparing and correlating groups of games using that. Belisle's season OPS-against is .715, which is better than league average. Last night's outing was somewhat higher though.
  8. Mod note: There's been hyperbole on both sides in this thread so far. "Every single time," "pitchers have figured him out," led things off, and later "still a huge problem". Leads to "hitting .407" and so forth, intended as a remedy but can escalate. Fortunately most of the posts have been more in the middle ground and backed up with evidence, and even the hyperbolic ones have been constructive. Let's just stick to the topic and try to avoid hinting that certain opinions aren't permissible.
  9. Welp, as of half an hour ago, we're sellers again.
  10. Here's my 4 Adopt-A-Prospects: Aaron “Stretch” Slegers Felix "The Cat" Jorge - concur with the OP on this Ben "The General" Rortvedt Austin "Foshizzle" Bizzle
  11. I'm personally more interested in plays made than fielding percentage. 298 plays made in 577 innings works out to about 4.6 plays made per 9 innings. It's apples-and-oranges somewhat to compare minor league numbers to majors, but that would put him in Jose Vizcaino or Andrelton Simmons territory. Of course, those guys can hit.
  12. There's stoplights near the ballpark. You might just barely miss it.
  13. There is a discrepancy between the baseball-reference.com game log for Bizzle, which shows 4 innings as you stated, and the milb.com box score that you linked, which shows him pitching just 1 inning, giving way to Landon Leach who pitched 3. Given that Bizzle has gone only for short stints in his prior appearances in the GCL, and he's coming back from the DL, I'm inclined to believe the latter. Maybe there was a temporary transcription error in the game account, and b-r.com just hasn't caught up yet.
  14. Just when I had given up hope of seeing Austin get healthy enough to see the light of day the remainder of this season, he started the GCL Twins' game against their Red Sox counterparts, and puzzled their batters to the tune of a clean inning with one strikeout. The team went on to win 4-3.
  15. Ben launched the Kernels toward their eventual 3-0 win with his second inning home run against the Quad Cities River Dregs. He also singled to drive in a run in the third. According to milb.com, that single was a little unconventional. "The fly ball was initially ruled a catch by Bandits left fielder Ronnie Dawson. Dawson threw the ball back to the infield on what appeared to be a double play to end the inning. The umpires conferred, ruled the ball hit the fence first, scoring the run." Seth's minor league wrap-up for the day contained this quote from Clark Beeker, that game's pitcher: "Ben does a phenomenal job behind the plate. It really is impressive to watch him work and how much he values the defensive side of the game. Obviously his home run and single were huge to get some momentum going early, and he's definitely swung the bat better these last few months. His dedication to being on the same page with the pitchers and taking control of the game at his age and in his first full season is impressive and has been fun to watch, whether I'm a spectator that day or pitching.” Ben's batting average now stands at .221 and his OPS has peeked its nose just above .600. Things are moving in the right general direction for him. In perhaps a show of confidence, Cedar Rapids manager Tommy Watkins has been batting him fifth in the lineup lately.
  16. There was a perfect one-inch circular divot, the size of our youngest son's elbow tip, in the living room drywall from when he leaped up off the couch and swung his arms wildly when "the interception'" occurred. We left it there for several years until we repainted - it served as a reminder.
  17. Felix Jorge's start against the Jackson Generals on August 8 was just so-so. He was charged with only 2 ER in 7.2 innings, but there was a third run counted as unearned due to an error by the catcher. And ten hits plus a walk in that span, along with only 3 strikeouts, isn't really dominating. True, alternate innings (2nd, 4th, 6th) were clean one-two-three affairs, but there was a lot of traffic on the basepaths in the odd numbered stanzas, plus the eighth.. The Lookouts didn't score any runs, and Jorge was charged with the 3-0 loss. After a couple of very strong outings, so-so is OK, if it doesn't become the norm.
  18. The Kernels fell 7-6 to the Quad Cities River Thieves on August 8, but not for lack of effort by Ben Rortvedt. He walked in the second inning, drove home a run in the third with a single, and scored a run himself after walking in the seventh.
  19. If we play good, I hope we are enough better to win.
  20. Moderator's note: I feel like a wet blanket to mention that the TD Comment Policy specifically forbids disdainful nicknames. Keep them in the spirit of fun Tom has started!
  21. Small Sample Size. I predict he doesn't maintain this pace the rest of the way. (The .545 BABIP also looks unsustainable.)
  22. The TD Comment Policy does mention this as an example of trolling: inserting a pet idea into thread after threadI'd ask that you dial it back a little.
  23. By any chance were adult beverages involved in the production of this suite of posts?
