  1. Really nice inning for the home batters. Now, Hughes needs to not give it right back.
  2. Guess Rosario didn't get the memo about this pitcher. But... the free swinging approach pays off anyway!
  3. Sano brings home Dozier! Nothing fancy, single-walk-single against a pitcher with shaky control.
  4. We kind of try to avoid the derisive nicknames, even in game threads.
  5. Just one, going to the bottom of the first. CBU.
  6. Two straight pitches right at Votto's legs. Hughes facial expression tried to sell the HBP as a mistake, but it seems unlikely.
  7. And.... we are down 1-0 after two batters.
  8. That wouldn't be a very good number, would it? b-r.com shows Gibson's 2018 strikeout rate at 26.1%, well above his career norm of around 16. This still has him only 14th in the league among pitchers with a qualifying number of innings. But it's a big move up. Hope it's sustainable. / edit - Ah, never mind. You mean swinging strikes... or something. Multiple meanings of whiff.
  9. Gameday shows the Reds starter as Luis Castillo*. He's young but has been traded a few times. Baseball-reference.com shows an odd sequence: July 29, 2016: Traded by the Miami Marlins with Josh Naylor (minors), Carter Capps and Jarred Cosart to the San Diego Padres for Andrew Cashner, Tayron Guerrero, Colin Rea** and cash. August 1, 2016: Traded by the San Diego Padres to the Miami Marlins for Colin Rea. Two days after a big trade, the two teams both say "whoops, didn't mean to include that one guy. Backsies? Okay. Whew." *** * Not to be mistaken for that guy who played second base for us for a little while and eventually netted us Drew Butera in trade. ** Not to be mistaken for that Crying Game guy**** *** Actually the trade was unwound due to an injury to Rea. Ruins a good story.***** **** Don't you just hate unnecessary footnotes? ***** Yeah, me too.
  10. It's not going to shock me if Hughes struggles and puts us in a hole but we come back to win.
  11. He actually did pretty well in AAA last year. A 3.95 ERA and 1.5 WHIP look bad, but the PCL inflates numbers*, and El Paso as a home park in particular did him no favors. The IL and Rochester have to be like a breath of fresh air for him. * Western elevations don't explain away his chronic BB problem of course.
  12. Baseball-reference.com has his signing date as February 28 in case that matters.
  13. Moreso than most pitchers, I think, Gibson's command comes and goes. It's not that his stuff is so awesome (like Berrios) that sometimes the fancy pitches don't go where he and the catcher plan; but nevertheless some games you can plainly see that even the regular pitches don't go where Gibby and the catcher plan. That's got to be the most frustrating thing in the world for an athlete.
  14. Worst limerick ever. In fairness, the best limericks ever will get a person banned at TD. If you were going for Haiku, keep working at it.
  15. Losing my appetite is a side effect of reading this thread.
  16. That is unfortunate, since Ben can't even legally buy a beer yet. (Buying beer is very important in the major leagues.)
  17. So you're saying if we don't bother fixing the last man in the bullpen, we'll have ourselves a lights-out reliever? I like your thinking.
  18. He went 1-3 yesterday, so that BA is up just a little bit further still. For those who want to keep up with Ben, his Adopt-A-Prospect page is expertly and entertainingly written by, well, modesty forbids me. Plenty more Twins prospects out there waiting to be adopted too! What. The. Bloody. Deuce?
  19. My recollection is that the starting rotation was thought to be deep and MLB-ready, but that was based on an expectation of Gonsalves and Littell who ended up in AA because the brass thinks they aren't.
