  1. I share this view. The Red Sox consciously converted him from starter to reliever. It's not impossible that the Twins' talent evaluators could have noticed something their Red Sox counterparts overlooked when they made this judgement, and if they feel this is the case then go for it; but lacking a reason to think the Sox are bad at their jobs I tend to see this as an undertaking with low odds of success.
  2. The Hammer closed the 2012 season hurt, and given his injury history I'd have been surprised if fellow GMs had been receptive if Ryan brought the name up in conversation during the off-season.
  3. I think there is some antipathy toward agent Boras, as well.
  4. Tonkin's on the 40-man now. Roenicke's already been outrighted. Pressly remains on the 40-man even if optioned to AAA.
  5. Is there some bigger category than "gigantic" to describe worse failures in other organizations that occurred in the same time span?
  6. This comment prompted me to re-read last year's book. Good stuff, and highly interesting to read with 20/20 hindsight. Assuming the plan is to offer Blueprints by each of the site founders, I would like to see them include one more thing: what is the fallback plan if some major assumptions fall through? For instance, with 20/20 hindsight, it looks like almost all the proposed free-agent acquisitions were based on very low estimates of what it would take to sign players, and if the aim was to keep within a certain budget, what would the blueprint become (in very general terms) if all the planned moves cost a total of $10M more than budgeted? Hopefully it's not too late in the editorial process to add a paragraph with this kind of scenario-based thinking that a real GM has to go through.
  7. A post from June 2013:
  8. Yes, that looks like the right price for that kind of talent. If the team you're trying to acquire said talent from asks too much in return, you set your sights on a Randy Ruiz type as an equivalent alternative. Righties who can handle lefty pitching but not do much else are there to be found, on the minor-league free agent pile, if a GM wants to look. Still hoping Plouffe does something to raise his value to the world, of course, and while he's still a Twin.
  9. Apparently the word "apparently" has multiple meanings, and I did not intend the one that conveys certainty, but instead the one that supposes a level of doubt. Sorry for the ambiguity.
  10. That's a happy kind of music. I've been known to get hung up on a particular song for days, to the annoyance of anyone around me. After seeing a particular Tarantino movie, I antagonized my son with these renditions (among many fun covers) of Chick Habit: (needs to be at some volume) (the version in the movie)
  11. Very good range of comments on that site. I have no idea how to offer a sleeper prospect there, our good prospects are well known. I could post "Rosario" and then when someone protests he's good but not a sleeper, I can say "I meant the other one", and if someone protests that he's not unknown enough either, I can say "I meant the other other one".
  12. I meant to bring this up in another thread, but it had escaped my attention until recently that Randy has made his way pretty far up the Cubs front office hierarchy.
  13. My recollection is that it was all about the money. Toronto offered him more, and more of it was guaranteed. This was when MLB minimum was in the neighborhood of $100K, so a difference of around $1M, which I think it must have been, was a big deal, like $4-5M would be today.
  14. If Bailey is unwilling to sign an extension with Cincinnati, it's not clear to me why he would sign one with the Twins. If he's focused on free agency, he'll likely view any Twins offer as something a bigger-market team will top.
  15. Yeah, and it's only the fourth inning. Could be the Best Game Thread Evar!
  16. Great game thread. Didn't even need Carnac to pass the time.
  17. I would rather have had one player with upside than these two fringe players. Apparently that was not an offer on the table.
  18. I always cringe when flipping is mentioned as part of the strategy. How many pitchers moved for prospects this year? Scott Feldman is the only FA pitcher I recall being traded, and he fetched a 27-year-old reclamation project starter and an OK 28-year-old reliever. If you're hoping for a Span-for-Meyer caliber of trade by signing a FA pitcher, it would be odds-against, IMO. I'd like to see the team strengthened through FA signings, period. Roster management after that point should occur organically, not because the plan is to flip a particular acquisition.
  19. Folks, a day later, and several recent posts have the greatest potential to get off the tracks again. Please avoid going off on tangents that are obviously contentious with no chance of solving anything. Also please avoid grouping people needlessly, such as "anyone who agrees/disagrees also must think..."
  20. In addition to the many points raised about the dilemma of adding Kepler to the 40-man, I would add that it means there is no slack left for a "lost season" in the next three, say a strained hammie costing him 6 weeks in May and then a broken collarbone ruining the final half of his season.
  21. Come visit me out here in the mountain West. I'll show you some shortcuts that do not get you to your destination faster.
  22. Baker managing the Twins is an interesting thought. I'll start a separate thread about that.
  23. I see that Dusty Baker made himself expendable in Cincinnati by not winning in the post-season. Given that the Twins just re-signed their own manager for two seasons, it's an interesting compare and contrast situation. A wag mentioned in another thread here that he'd like to see Baker ruin a few of the lesser arms in the Twins AAAA roster. At least, I HOPE and TRUST he said it waggishly. Me, I would love to see how well Trevor Plouffe and a few of the other allegedly mellow guys would get along with crusty Dusty.
  24. I'm not going to dig out the quote, but I remember Mastroianni saying something very similar, about *himself*. He was being the good soldier, when faced with the fact of Hicks getting the starting job at the beginning of the season. But, it was still a very "aware" thing to say.
  25. Of course walks contribute to WHIP. What I'm getting at is, if you're going to assume or imply motives and other activities going on between the ears of FO people, alluding to pitch-to-contact or whatever, why not give credit that they saw beyond ERA (which wasn't that hot anyway) and used some more-analytical methods (that go beyond even WHIP?!?!?) to determine whom to demote?
