  1. I would guess that any team (with the exception of the Padres) that had even tepid intetest in Stauffer would have told him, "sure, we'll see what you can do as a starter in spring training."
  2. The specialization of bullpens combined with the starter's pitch count means more pitching changes than ever. And every time, the manager jogs out to the mound, taps his arm, gives the outgoing pitcher a pep talk and pats him on the behind, then holds an inexplicable pow-wow with the infielders while the reliever jogs in. Then the reliever throws a few warm-up tosses before play begins again.
  3. In that case, you're not the type of fan that MLB is most concerned about. You'll probably watch regardless of how long the game goes. This matter is more about new fans... kids who get bored watching a baseball game, or parents who decide not to take their kids to a weekday evening game because it very well might go past 11:00 p.m. and the kids need to be up for school in the morning.
  4. MLB needs to do away with the manager's challenge. It's not the replay process so much as the manager's stroll out on to the field to stall for time while the dugout reviews the video. Put in place an extra "video" umpire who signals the field crew that a play should be reviewed and take the managers out of the equation. Also on the subject of managers strolling out to the field, is it really necessary to do so for every pitching change?
  5. I wouldn't mind them replaying a Twins loss as long as it was a good game.
  6. I suspect that Meyer won't debut until June. That leaves May, Milone, and Pelf. Like I've said before, if all three of those guys are bad in ST, Pelf will be their choice.
  7. I don't think Joe has the personality to take charge of a huddle.
  8. Not sure how much the starting of guys like Cuddyer and Parmelee in center was Gardy's doing... TR has basically said that outfield defense is overrated and Torii would be adequate out there. My guess is April 28.
  9. I don't disagree with what you're saying... I just think that if all three of May, Milone, and Pelfrey are bad in ST, they'll give the ball to Pelfrey first because they have less invested in Milone and they have plenty of time to get May on track. I still think Meyer is AAA bound for a couple months regardless.
  10. I think the Twins want Pelfrey to pitch well more than they want Milone or May to pitch well. That's why they'll give him every opportunity, maybe to drum up a bit of trade interest or to justify his contract, or both.
  11. Milone, Escobar, maybe Pinto... possibly Parmelee before he was DFA'd... a minor league reliever or two. Just my opinion of who the Twins might deem available.
  12. The way I see it, the likelihood of each option is 1. Pelfrey, 2. Milone, 3. May. I wouldn't expect to see Meyer until his service clock is pushed back. I say Pelfrey is the front-runner mostly because Milone is likely to be the more valuable reliever, and I expect May to begin the season in AAA. Not that I like it- the Pelfrey contract reminds me of the 2nd Rondell White contract, in that the justifications for both were good Septembers following otherwise terrible seasons.
  13. Joe's offseason batting average is through the roof.
  14. I guess I'm not counting on major contributions from Buxton this year. He's had less than half of a cup of coffee at AA, and he's been hurt more often than not in his pro career. I'm not saying he's not a great prospect or that he's injury prone... just saying don't count your chickens before they're hatched. For my money I'd like to see a true centerfielder out there, not a part-timer or a work in process
  15. The problem I have with Santana in center is that the outfield defense is already going to be bad... Santana's ability to "run down his mistakes" isn't good enough for me. The Twins need a CF who doesn't make mistakes, and can run down the corner outfielder mistakes.
  16. Somebody fired Baerga, and I doubt that person was Vargas. It wouldn't have happened if Baerga's boss liked the work that he was doing. Not saying Vargas didn't have a finger in that soup, just that it's unlikely that Baerga is blameless here.
  17. Obviously the closers and their agents like the 9th inning specialist role. I think the managers like it too, in large part because it takes that decision out of their hands, and they aren't criticized for bringing in the wrong guy if that guy is always the same guy. The establishment of roles among relievers is way overblown, IMO. The closer knows his role, but the set-up man has the same role regardless- come in late to a game when you need some outs. The only difference for them is that they know it won't be their time to come in if the team has a three-run or less lead in the ninth inning.
  18. Does the removal of Eric Fryer from the 40-man indicate that the Twins are comfortable enough in Josmil Pinto to be the backup catcher?
  19. With Arcia doing his Delmon Young impression in left and the skeletal remains of Torii Hunter in right, the Twins need a real outfielder in center. I know that Santana didn't embarrass himself out there, but the standards need to be higher than that
  20. I believe that a big reason TF seemed to be a pitcher's park early on was that the Twins lineup was a holdover from the Metrodome era. It's no secret that the Twins built those lineups to lean heavily left-handed. Guys like Kubel and Morneau certainly didn't have the same success at TF. Unless you're a lefty hitter with prodigious power it is difficult to hit homers to right field. The Twins have learned since then that the park is more generous to righties.
  21. I suspect it will be Pelfrey because it has been the Twins' MO to let the veteran guy play himself out of his spot, and they like him for reasons beyond his on-field performance. That was the MO in the Gardenhire era, anyway. It will be interesting to see how roster decisions are affected by a new manager, but the final decisions were always the GM's to make.
  22. He hasn't been very good outside of Petco. Lucky for him Target Field has been such a paradise for Twins pitchers *snort*.
  23. I don't disagree, but I bet that Terry Ryan does, and we won't see Meyer until June when his service clock has been pushed back.
  24. Unless the plan is to keep Santana in CF (and it should't be), Escobar can do everything Punto can and hits better, too. I'm not a big fan of Nunez but at least he wouldn't be as redundant as Punto.
