    Last year they punted on 2nd down, when we had a shot at a touchdown by signing Happ and Shoemaker. 2017 they punted by trading away some assets and the team still made it to the playoffs. We still have a competitive core even w/o Berrios and Cruz. I don't really trust PECOTA's projections on little experienced Ryan or Ober yet they're not that bad where if we pick up a couple of of attainable SPs like Montas or Rodon that we could have a pretty respectable rotation. So I implore this FO not to punt again, just because you think that you're good at it.

    Totally agree with you. Too much focus is stressed on hitting HRs, resulting in humongous SOs. He'll hit a lot of HRs the way it is. Leave him alone, he has a great swing. Martin is great, he'll give us plenty of depth in CF. After having a drought at CF back up for soooo long, soon we'll have him, Celestino and Lewis that can play there. Now that we'll soon have 2 super utility players together with Miranda and Gordon, it makes total sense to trade Arraez, while we can get something for him. Hopefully soon Martin can come and contribute to this very good core line up.

    Thanks Ted for a very good article. I like how you started that this could be his best year yet. I share your optimism, especially when there's report that he's even faster. This shows his determination to plow through all adversity. He not only has all the tools to be a MVP but also the grit and baseball savvy. Plus his great desire to be a Twin, this shows his loyality to the Twins and not to make the big $. I haven't been as excited about a prospect since Buxton and it may even exceed that. I don't care what other polls say, he's #1 in my book. Whatever problem he faces wether if it's his hitting, fielding or health, he'll get ontop of it

    I believe practically every trade that this FO has done, they have been 1st approached. Now as you've stated that "It would be wise to assume that frameworks have been discussed before the lockout, and things should come together quickly when we get a resumption." I agree that for us to have a leg up before the frenzy, we would need some framework and relationships established before the lock-out. With their history of waiting to be approached, it doesn't instill much confidence for me. Nevertheless, I thank you Ted for your article and hope I'm wrong and that they're able to pull off a Montas trade

    I appreciate your effort Melissa of encouraging us and I agree with everything you said. 2020 shortened season really helped our pitchers, it was a perfect storm for them. A good chance that could happen again if there's a shortened season. It's a good way to look at it if indeed it happens. But I'd prefer if it'd be settled soon so our young players on the 40 man have the much needed time to develop & prepare, especially Royce Lewis.

    I just saw the ESPN top 100, and Miranda is the only one on the list (around 87). So it's a little discouraging about our future since that's what some fans want to build our hopes on and forget about our present core.

    I know Lewis developed that high leg kick on his own but most everyone wants him to ditch it.

    Keith Law speaks his mind but I believe that mind is bias for AL East Division teams, especially Toronto and against lowly AL Central teams, especially Twins. It's interesting how high he's on Austin Martin (a Toronto by-product) and so low on Royce Lewis (home grown) which he knows very little about except that he doesn't like his swing (I know we haven't seen him for 2 years now because his injury and covid, which would effect his rating but not that much). Too many people put too much importance on his swing. The poor showing that Lewis has shown is based on the organization tinkering on his swing yet he had a MVP performance in the AFL, where they left him alone. Many MLB hitters have that high leg kick and have done quite well. Let him figure it out on his own. I'm a little frustated with our pitching farm system. I'd hoped to see some one by now step up and perform well on the MLB level. I'm pleased that Dobnak has appeared from nowhere and have some success but we are still waiting on our higher rated prospects. Twins traded away home grown Berrios and Graterol which slims down our home grown MLB ready pitchers. I know that drafting pitchers has not been a high priority with the Twins so why are we surprised when others evaluate our pitching farm system so low?

    Although I'm hopeful about Ryan, I'm not convinced about his future success. Good hitters will adjust and when they do he will be clobbered, will he be able to adjust? Like Karbo said "only time will tell"

    That's my point. His swing in the past, has been geared to hit those towering bombs. His swing at the end of the season to me seemed more compact. This swing gives me hope that he'll cut way down his SOs and yet he's strong enough to get more than his share of HRs. If he goes back to his old ways, I say ship him.

    I'm sorry Cody I'm not sold on LHP Kikuchi, I don't see him having success in this division. I've liked both Story & Rodriguez. SS is in big demand, we really need a good glove so if we can snare Story that would be great. But even that people have doubts about Story's bat, his price tag will be bid up above our price range, maybe we can get lucky. Texas star 3B prospect is down so Isiah Kiner is more than likely off the block. List for viable SS glove is getting smaller but the buyer list is big. My hope is that FO doesn't settle for a 2nd or 3rd rate SS glove. I advocated for trading for Rodriguez last season. He did very well most of the season but at the end he tailed off. What were those reasons? Maybe he got tired after pitching so much or maybe it was due to the crack down on the sticky stuff. Tepera could be a better option. We still don't have a viable CF insurance policy. I'd pursue some options for a true CFer and not get burned again.

    I think Sano's salary was too generous, he could've been had for much less. Polanco & Kepler were much less, Sano's salary should've been in the same ball park. If his salary was lower his expectation would be lower. Sano' has been disappointing but he is strong and quick, his potential is pretty good. He's fine at 1B. I like his swing at the end of the season if he can maintain that swing, he'd be worth it.

    I agree with you Thiéres it wouldn't take much to fill our holes this season. It would've taken much less last year but they punted with Shoemaker and Happ. There were motivated sellers, PIT offered Musgrove to us but SD plundered him away, because this FO failed to counter offer. We could've even picked Odorizzi up comparitively the same price as the soft tossing lefty. I disagree that there was anything good about signing Happ & Shoemaker. I advocated before the season started, a large strong long relief corp where many of our AAAA pitchers would have been exposed earlier to MLB and the burden of the rotation and short been lightened, resulting in many more wins. This off-season, Montas is my 1st choice also (and extend him if possible) if they'll take Arraez and a prospect. HOU is motivated to trade Odorizzi, it could happen w/ a low valued player (Rooker) plus some $ received in return. We desperately need veteran experience that some one like Odo could provide. Trades can be made w/ minimium loss and maximium return. I'm even advocating more strongly for a larger long relief corp because our rotation could be comprised of mainly openers. We still have a very powerful line up, don't give up on the Twins. It wouldn't take much to fill our holes, they could afford even going after Story. Lets makes some serious moves and not punt again.

    Although Robertson and Beckman are more veteran than Gordon, I don't see them as better. IMO they are both long shots (although this FO might see things differently, Cave example), even if they trade Arraez. I'd rather see Miranda elevated to that position.

    It's all a progression. Alcala started out pretty well against RH hitters and then there was adapting and development. He's still developing and has progressed in the right direction and he has value for the Twins. I don't expect Duran to set the world on fire (although he might), My hope is he'll be serviceable for the Twins, continue to develop in the right direction and adapt to the hitters adapting to him.

    I'm hoping that Duran will turn out be like Alcala. Alcala came up & figured it out, he could be figured into the "modular pitching staff". Modular pitching staff seems to be the only way to accommodate our current pitching staff, especially after trading away Berrios. Even if we pick up a SP or 2 that can go 5+ quality innings, we still need a large rotating long relief corp (which they failed to do last season, which I credit to our early large hole) to give relief to the usually over burdened rotation and short relief . Duran should eventually fit into this scheme.

    Now that Polanco is where he should be, the sky is the limit. He'll be the best deal in baseball. I don't think Kepler's FB%/ GB% ratio has really changed the last 3 years. The only change from 2019 is juiced ball to dead ball. From the latest TD Kepler article, this off season he's been working on his swing. So I have high hopes that he'll be able to adjust and add to his value.

    SS is a very demanding and critical position, many drafted SS don't make it. It's very hard to find a true SS and you multipy the odds when you demand him to be an above average bat. I've asked the same question as you Cody if the Twins can effectly develop players at SS. Truthfully, IDK the answer to that. There were high hopes for these 3 young prospects when drafted. Maybe along with being a grueling position, injuries and absent '20 season derailed their SS careers. At this point I don't see Gordon or Javier as real SS options. Lewis was being groomed as a CF option until Polanco was moved to 2B. I still have hope in Lewis being a good fielding SS but I wouldn't want to depend on him w/o plan B. We're very shallow at SS so I think signing a Story to a few years contract isn't a bad idea. But getting back to the main subject, I think FO should re-evaluate our SS development and talent evaluations. Maybe they need improvement, maybe not.

    I like SWR's attitude and has 3 working pitches. He's definitely not BP material. Once settled in and time for the coaching staff to work with him, he'll be fine. Like baseball's Yogi Berra said "baseball is 90% mental and the other half is physical". IMO SWR has that mental toughness. IMO SWR is rated this high because of his potential, attitude and mental toughness.

    Congratulations Ted, on a great article on a great prospect. IMO Lewis's injury has been the most disasterous for the Twins. I was all bummed out about it, and doubted wether he'd come back and meet his expectations. Then I reminded myself about his drive, baseball savvy and character and I knew he'd come back and give his all. I still have great expectations for him, wether he sticks at SS or some place else. There has never been any doubt about his love for baseball, but what impressed me most about this article was how he embrasses the possibility to be a Twin and to experience the Minnesotan life. We have found a real deal and need to hold onto him much like we've done to Buxton. Hope the Twins appreciate who they have here.

    I'm not by far a pitching expert, to me Gaterol threw effortlessly at 100mph but experts didn't like his delivery. So Petty I can't say, wish him well with all his pitches.

    Thanks Nick for recreating these memories of some good transactions that really helped the Twins, I was excited about both of them. Hopefully Duran and that draft will eventually work out and Sano will finally find that stability we need from him. I contribute Cruz signing mainly to Jonathan Scoop. Cruz was a good friend & former teammate of Scoop. Scoop wanted a reunion so he planted a bug in both parties. So glad he did. Escobar was a very interesting player and was great in the club house. I liked him, agreed it was a bummer to lose him. Twins were interested in Archer but weren't willing to pay their high price tag. But the Rays were motivated to move Odorizzi for good SS depth, so the Twins was approached. The rest is history. Who knows there might be a reunion if the cards play right.

    We should have had some one in aprendship that's ready to sub and learn under Buxton. Lewis has been under Hunter wing but now the focus is SS. Celestino and Martin isn't too far off. We'll have to see who'll stick at CF. Maybe ending black dominance there?
