Seems the Twins have a good game plan. Get on base, Raze havoc on base, Shake up the pitcher to make mistakes. NYY have trouble with that plan. -

Why do the Twins admire the Yankees so much? Where they want to copy them & fear them & freeze up against their pitchers. Why did they put Julien at 1B when they rarely did so at AAA, or why is he still up here? Much less given so many regular ABs? It's time for the Twins to stop rolling over & play dead. We need a different mindset from the top down. Stop seeing ourselves as grasshoppers & more like the conquerors, even with this remnant. Nothing would give me greater pleasure. Baldelli show some fire! Prepare the team mentally. Why is the team so flat against NYY? Down with the Yanks! Let's be a spoiler & kick the Yanks out of the Playoffs. If not we could be one that sparks NYY comeback. Yuck.

Week in Review: Expectations Gone, Energy Unlocked
Doctor Gast replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
IMO, the Twins have been very flat, one reason may be because it seems that the FO isn't going out & trying to make this team into a contender. Therefore, the veterans were not motivated. The defense hasn't been great, but the infusion of new blood has helped to put together some chemistry & winning streaks. The rotation has been solid & the BP has been surprising. This week, the Twins have been in the games with Keaschall being the deciding factor if we won or lost them. I hope the Twins are up to sweeping the NYY, MIA & others have. That'd make me very happy.- 67 replies

Week in Review: Expectations Gone, Energy Unlocked
Doctor Gast replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The lack of attention on defense, baserunning & fundamentals & primary attention on hitting HRs, hitting HRs their way. Had tremendous negative effects on all aspects of our development. Plus, their warped idea of positioning players by their bat, not their glove & favoritism has greatly handicapped this club. There are many examples, but I'd like to focus on one area 2B. Baldelli is venomous about the importance of defense at 1B, willing to compromise promising, recovering Miranda & Kiriloff. But the keystone it doesn't matter; Arraez is the best hitter there is, but he was a liability at 2B, Julien has been a liability at 2B, yet Baldelli is determined to have him as our bedrock there. IMO, 2B is a premium position, where range, soft hands & able to turn a smooth DP is critical. There is a reason why they call DPs the pitchers' best friend. They are also very open to making 2B a revolving door. IMO, the most important relationship is the SS/ 2B behind the pitcher/ catcher. Continuity between the 2Bman & SS is very important, but how can that happen when it's a revolving door? SS/ 2B needs to be as stable as possible to maintain that continuity. Martin's pro career has been one of teams trying to force him into something he's not. 1st, years of playing SS & trying to make him into an HR hitter. Finally, in '23, they gave up & left him alone at primarily 2B where he flourished. In '24, they thought to convert him to OF, so they could have a RH bat there. Martin is athletic & makes some nice plays there, but he's no OFer, especially at CF. Castro was very valuable at super utility, but he was over-extended at SS & CF, which affected his offensive performance. Martin is less adapted at CF than Castro, so he's even more overextended at CF & IMO, likewise, it affects his offensive performance. Keaschall is quite the natural hitter, but what I've seen, he's not exceptional at 2B. He has played 1B, so why not have him rotate from 1B to DH? So IMO, it suits the Twins better if they stop trying to make Martin into someone he's not & let him flourish into someone who he is, And IMO, Keaschall is better protected at 1B.- 67 replies

BBTV is like most any other stat, you take it with a grain of salt, it's not be all, end all. Most stats are not real life. Most stats don't include human intangibles, underlying conditions & IMO, biased. BBTV is only used to gauge players' trade value. Yet on the website, I deny maybe 95% of all Twins trade offers (that are not mine). Just because the sum of both sides are equal doesn't mean it's a good trade. IMO, there are some hype (positive or negative) linked to players who are involved in trades that needs to be sifted through. Needs should also be involved in trades that control leverage.

Though having a few key players that fell into their laps, the Twins have constantly looked great on paper but have never cashed in except in '23. Largely due to faulty philosophies, bad player evaluations led to the mispositioning of many players, which negatively affected our defense; targeting poor & injured players, who often didn't fill our needs while ignoring some promising players; Poor development, mismanagement, which I've explained many times before that includes players health. Inability to see needs, initiate & make needed trades to fill our needs. This FO makes many excuses but the reason for the disappointment is on them.

I'm not against trading Correa or having the kids a shot. The Twins have been flat, IMO, not because of the players, so much, but more that the stadium was empty, it was empty because they were losing, they were losing because Falvey couldn't see the problem & didn't know how to solve it & he never really listened to the players. You never sell a player when he bottomed out. IMO, he would have raised his value this fall while shoring up a fragile INF. We could have done much better this offseason. If HOU really wanted him (which I believe they did) Falvey should have driven a much better deal.

I didn't say that I didn't like Lee, My concern is if Lee & Lewis don't remain healthy. As I stated, if we need a band-aid, who can we throw at SS or 3B from the roster, in an emergency? Nobody, Eeles can fill that void, plus other positions. Can you throw Keaschall at SS & 3B? Keaschall is a great hitter but he's not that smooth at 2B. Which is another debate, I don't want to go into.

No Castro & no Correa on the left side, that leaves us with only Lee & Lewis team on the roster. If anything happens to them, then we have nobody on the roster to sub them. What if it's not convenient to call up a Band-Aid from AAA? IMO, they need to finally call up Payton Eeles to fill that Castro void. 2B has been a mess this season. Even with Correa & Castro, IMO our INF was fragile. I've been concerned about this INF all season & it got worse. I'm not sure how good or how long it takes or even if Culpepper can be a passable MLB SS. Or how long it'd take for Houston to be a passable MLB SS. This FO has no vision; they take the mess as it comes & try to deal with it. It'd be wonderful if we had a FO that could see the problem ahead of time & have a very good plan B. IMO, FAs are most often the worst option for a team like us, inferior & expensive.

I've been an advocate for something like this for a long time, to no avail. Seems like every year, the BP burns out which strains the rotation & burns them out with injuries & poor innings in the 2nd half. '19 we had a great rotation. They piggybacked Perez & Pineda; the rotation was red-hot during that time. They discontinued that, plus the BP burned out. The pitching limped across the finish line in the postseason. '22 to economize, they got Bundy & late Archer, with Levine announcing Twins goal of piggybacking. Bundy & Archer were piggyback candidates. Shortly after that, it was announced that the SPs had to go at least 5, preferably 7. Bundy & Archer started out well but did not fare well under the changed philosophy. From the beginning of the season, I wanted long relief. With the gutted BP & fragile rotation now, this piggyback option could be our only hope for a respectable season. Now it needs to be determined who'll be the opener & who'll be the long RP. I'm not necessarily in favor of making this into the typical Falvey's showcase fiasco.

Minnesota Twins Back to Selling Hope
Doctor Gast replied to Nate Palmer's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Falvey operates mainly on hope & luck. He's had some luck in having players fall in his lap, but afraid other FO have learned their lesson on that they don't have to give MN what they need because if they wait a little longer & spin some stats, he'll settle for less. Some players, like Castro, they had no plans of keeping them, but in Castro's case, they had no choice but to select him because of the injuries. He didn't want to sign Buxton, but the fans spoke & the Pohlads heard. Because of these players that weren't planned but fell into his lap, we had hope. Now, because of this sell-off, & what could be a complete sell-off. I'm afraid he ran out of luck & relying on his ability, there's no hope to be had.- 36 replies

Looking at that, they're expiring contracts as sellers, I'm ok with them too. But look at it as a buyer competing for division champ or wildcard. I'd be overjoyed to get a Bader, Castro, Coulume or Paddack; they would be valuable assets to any competing team for a redundant lotto ticket. When has Falvey ever done anything like that? Teams need these players, so use that little bit of leverage to get something more relevant. I was a little disappointed with the Paddack trade. But since we aren't going to be competitive for years to come, I'm ok with it now. But sad that we won't be competitive.

Let me put it this way. I'd be overjoyed if we got what we traded away for what we got in return, if we were buying instead of the trades that Falvey made when we bought at the deadline.

I agree that it's impossible to know exactly how the trades will shake out in the end. But that doesn't stop people from evaluating trades. How do you weigh proven talent against potential? I guess you try to evaluate the odds. You try to sift out the hype from what's real. You look at E. Quero & compare him to Tait. Tait has much more power potential than Quero, but almost every prep catching prospect ever pans out. On the other hand, Quero is starting to prove he's a MLB catcher who can hit. Which would you prefer, a proven young MLB catcher who can hit, or a more likely good MLB DH? Like I stated in my text, you have to weigh out if those players are redundant or relevant & I'll add, you have to have confidence that your positional coaching is able to develop that player. I don't.

Why do we watch the Twins? Is it because they are the best team in baseball or full of superstars? No! We watch them because of the human MN connection. Otherwise, I'd be watching the Dodgers.

Baseball to me is a family sport. A wonderful time of watching sons, brothers & nephews playing ball. At tournaments, the family would hang out & have picnics while waiting around. This Varland trade is a perfect example of Falvey's weird analytics. Analytics based on weird philosophies, void of underlying considerations like a pitcher's arm condition or intangibles like a player's impact on the fanbase & clubhouse. I have advocated the trading of players like Julien, who had reached their maximum trade value & were very expendable. Varland had not reached his maximum trade value & he was very valuable as the closer & foundation of the upcoming BP, which is floundering. We needed LH hitting cOF Roden like we needed a....... I think you get my drift, Rojas is a LHP with potential. The trade was OK, but IMO, we lost that trade even on face value. I can't say that Varland is untouchable, but the other team would have to REALLY blow my socks off. Which wouldn't happen because Varland is much more valuable to us than anybody else. As a seller, we should have won every trade & some we should have been blown away. But we lost every single trade, maybe not terribly, but nevertheless lost. Most of the players we received were redundant & or irrelevant to impacting this team in the near future, if at all. Varland is one reason why we watch the Twins, his trade is a perfect reason why Falvey shouldn't have been responsible for trading off our players or even running this team. Falvey is the reason why I no longer watch the Twins.

Some people think it's easy to replace a catcher. All you need is a bat. It's very valuable to have a catcher who knows your pitchers & people have no idea how long it takes for a catcher to learn his pitchers, it's a never-ending process. It's a plus if you can skip that time with Vazquez, even in minimal use. And this is no excuse that we don't need a promising young MLB-ready catcher.

5 Reasons to Keep Watching the Twins
Doctor Gast replied to Alex Boxwell's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'm not going to waste my time & money on the Twins. I'll check the box scores for some players & highlights if I want to see something, but that's it. Nothing will change until management changes. Pitching, catching & INF are constructed to crash, why do I want to watch that? I've been a Twins fan since they arrived to the TC, but I'm taking a break.- 48 replies

What I don't like about the Correa trade is that Correa's trade value was rock bottom. Trade him in the offseason, not now. The player they got in return was ridiculous. That signaled that this was a salary dump & Twins had no intention to be relevant this year or years to come; that triggered the sell-off. HOU had no intention to give to MN anything they thought might help them this season. They thought that Correa could help them so they got him. Good for them for seeing their need & going for it. Twins have no idea where their real problems are at & certainly don't know how to go about it to fix it.
-
IMO, you're right, he's more a 2Bman. Twins are trying to make him into an MLB CFer, because of his athleticism & Twins' concern for flexibility. IMO, Martin would be better served if he stayed at 2B.
