  1. Great foul ball to get another pitch to hit. Nice win.
  2. I'm on the positive but wondering side too. I see upside in a bunch of spots: Jeffers, Kirilloff, Polanco, Lewis, Castro, Larnach, Wallner, Julien, and have hope for Buxton, Correa, Kepler, Gallo, Vasquez, Farmer, Taylor, and Miranda. That's just on the position side.
  3. A bunch of soft contact that finds a hole brings in runs. It can happen and that is a fair reason to value contact.
  4. I find myself hoping that Joey Gallo can do something positive every time he comes to the plate. He is working hard in my opinion, which I give hime credit for and admire. Baseball is a tough sport. That said, my hopefulness and optimism for Gallo sees a guy who makes a few plays in the field but is not the guy he once was with a glove. He is not close to as good at first base as Kirilloff and does not come close to Kepler as an outfielder any longer. His bat is very sad these days. Since April, Gallo is wishing and searching for the ball and it is increasingly hard to find for the big guy. I remain hopeful but a decision will be necessary if July arrives with Gallo still looking so sad. You pick who takes his spot if the futility goes on another five weeks. Can Joey turn it around in June?
  5. Morgan has been interesting to watch but the Twins do not need to draft anyone for first base unless Lou Gerhrig returns. Kirilloff is set for a decade and the Twins drafted a first baseman to serve as an example of why not to make that mistake again.
  6. The best position young position player the Twins have in their system is a first baseman, Alex Kirilloff. He is good defensively and is a guy who can hit now and should improve. I'm afraid first base is the most certain positive the team has and that leaves those who want to play first base on the outside. Julien can still hit his way to a regular spot but the Twins better hope Polanco holds the position because he is really good and it would be a shame if Jorge fails.
  7. Holy **** I hope Lewis is ok. That was a weird play.
  8. Polanco was announced as returning to the roster last night with Julien returning to the Saints. Julien was fine but I believe Polanco remains the best player on the team and will provide a lift in all ways, shapes, and forms to the Twins and their fans.
  9. All credit for Matt Wallner continuing to focus at the plate. He has looked really tuned in and willing to smash the ball to all fields in this streak. It seemed that Wallner was prone to looking for pitches to pull late last season and early this year for the Twins. The Twins will need to evaluate their options and think hard about what Wallner's bat could mean for their season. There may be some hesitancy to move on from Joey Gallo or Max Kepler ( a long time favorite of mine), but Falvey and his study group have a real hot hitter in AAA. Who is likely to help the team win games?
  10. Lewis was in a group of five as well. Hunter Greene has some SI hype but it was known that he would need time to learn how to pitch. Greene was never seen as a Doc Gooden. FWIW, the top five this year are supposedly all rated higher than any of the five from 2017. It will be five years before we know enough to judge these guys from 2023.
  11. This game is somehow a show of the benefit of a decent 40 person roster. The Twins (and all the fans) are hoping that the $90 million dollar guys (Correa, Buxton, Gallo, Kepler, Vasquez, and Polanco) can get it together but we are seeing a few guys push for their MLB spots.
  12. The Twins are competing hard against a very good Houston Astros team. That is worth something. Nine innings or 27 outs are tough. It was a good spot for Jorge Lopez, if Varland needed to be pulled, and tonight it didn't work for him. Next guy up (Stewart) cleaned it up. Three outs to go.
  13. Pitching is sequence and location and J. Lopez gets hit hard throwing 99 when Ryan gets a ton of whiffs at 91. The guys always try but it ain't easy. Right?
  14. Varland is a strong man and when he gets a chance to pitch an eighth inning it allows him to learn what that territory feels like and how to navigate comfortably in a low key situation. Pitchers need to find their limit. Perhaps Varland made an indication that he was at his limit. I don't know that. Just assuming that 86 pitches is enough might not be the best choice. Now I see that Jorge Lopez is grooving a few. Pheww.
  15. Baldelli will pull Varland but I wouldlet him go 105 pitches unless he totally loses the strike zone.
  16. Julien will never win a gold glove but the rumblings about his defense are overrated. It is his bat that needs to work for him to stick, and either point is mute if Polanco can return and be himself, the best player on the team. Julien would be best as a DH versus right handed pitching.
  17. Agree, but he geta to balls and even turns the double play reasonably. His defense is really not an issue for all of the attention it draws. His stick needs to speak up though. We should expect him back to the Saints as early as tomorrow, but his patience and power are worth a look.
  18. Polanco, healthy and ready to play all out, is a big addition to the Twins.
  19. ... or did he expect Gallo could still run? I'm not happy with Julien's at bats recently but he has been fine in the field and is just a guy who looks awkward making plays.
  20. Julien fields that ball, Pena still beats it out. Varland is a bulldog competitor.
  21. Varland comes off the field shaking his head as if to wonder what is going on with 53 pitches through five innings against Houston. He is really developing an idea of how to manage the strike zone that is incredible and fun to watch.
  22. I don't care ..... it's in the past. Falvey gonna do whatever he wants to do. Never liked Mahle even when he was ok with the Reds. Just not the guy for winning against good teams. Still supported the trade for pitching, and yes, I still love the trade for Pablo Lopez. Who would trade one of Kirilloff, Lee, or Lewis for Steer and CES? That said, I always tried to catch as many CES at bats last season as possible. He does hit the ball really hard. Final thought is haunted houses are pretty lame.
