Edouard Julien Returns. What Can We Expect?
tony&rodney replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I understand numbers and have worked with them my entire life, but I do not understand those who fail to use what they see above the numbers or those who fail to acknowledge improvement in a player. In yesterday's game, two players received credit for hits in one inning.. One was a grounder to shortstop and another was a bunt that was inexplicable botched. When Martin threw home there was criticism of his glove tap but the timing of his throw would not have mattered because Jeffers reached for the ball instead of letting it come to him and then tagged the runner with his glove with the ball in his hand. The numbers won't show these plays. I won't suggest Julien is without his flaws on either side of the ball. The question is who plays 2B right now? Julien will need to produce if he wants to hold his spot in the lineup but right now, he is all the Twins have for the position. Currently Julien's glove puts him ahead of the other choices but he does need to hit too. -
53.5 Reasons to Love Joe Mauer on Induction Day
tony&rodney replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
An all time great - no question. The two things that always struck me about Mauer whenever I saw him play is how talented and unselfish he was as an athlete. Among many memories of watching Joe, an early one stood out. In the boy's state tournament, Mauer had one of the most amazing all around games I have ever seen in basketball. Mauer put up ridiculous numbers in a close loss to Osseo. Joe was a force all over the court with a triple double and nearly double digit blocks as well. The amazing thing is that Osseo was double-teaming and occasionally tripling up on Mauer and Joe still managed to find the open player or score on his own. Osseo had three D1 players and a really good team. I argued many times that the Twins should choose Mauer #1, based on his array of talent. He did not disappoint. -

Peralta is a really tough pitcher. I was hoping that the Twins would take a few more pitches that inning and hopefully get him out of the game. -
Edouard Julien Returns. What Can We Expect?
tony&rodney replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Julien is the focus of the question. Edouard has always hit and he should be fine. The Twins need a larger contingent to contribute. There has been quite a dropoff this year from Jeffers and Kepler and inexperienced players like Miranda, Lewis, Lee, Martin, Larnach, and Wallner need to step forward as well. Buxton has been decent thus far in 2024, but only Correa and Castro have been truly above average. The offense needs those highly drafted guys to produce or the season will crater. -
Edouard Julien Returns. What Can We Expect?
tony&rodney replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Time for the young guns to step up. Correa has been really good this year on both sides of the ball and he cannot be replaced. The only antidote is for multiple players to have consistently strong performances. The time to gain is now with a bunch of home games coming in August. Julien is just a part of the group that needs to step forward. -
The offense will need to get in tune starting today. Cleveland and other teams will be pushing every day. The Twins looked tired in San Francisco. Lee has been in a bit of a slump and may be needed at shortstop. It will be interesting to see the lineup tonight. Frddy Peralta is a good pitcher. I think we see Julien back at second base. Whatever transpires with the lineup, the Twins will need to hit their way into the playoffs. While I like the pitching overall, the staff is more set up to hold opponents to 3-4 runs and does not project as a group that throws shutouts or hold offenses to one or two runs. I'm expecting an AL Central Division title and the Twins start 5 games back with a deficit in head to head wins versus Cleveland. Should be fun.

Flipping back and forth between games, I wondered about a few things. No Jenkins or Emmanuel. Julien was listed on Gameday as an extra but must be in Minneapolis. Can he lead the Twins again? Keaschall seems to exude confidence and control of his at bats. Can he get pushed to the Saints in August? McCuster takes pretty good at bats and seems like he is improving and becoming a guy worth watching despite being older. Raya looks more and more like a relief pitcher, which seems harsh because he is still young. Lastly, watching these minor league games is interesting, both on its own and to get reminders of the vast disparity between MLB and the minors.

What JP Sears offers as a Twins Trade Target

Twins Top 20 Trade Value Series: 1-5

Everyone keeps asking what it takes to add a top starting pitcher. Kirby has four years of control, Gilbert three, and Skubel two. Give your best offer.- 15 replies

Twins Top 20 Trade Value Series: 6-10
tony&rodney replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'm in the dark at to the value of Miranda for another team. The Twins will not trade Lopez, Ryan, and Ober under any conditions short of a total steal. Correa has a full 'no trade' and thus doesn't fit on this list. If a player cannot be traded or won't be traded, do they still have trade value? Jenkins, Rodriguez, Lee, Festa, and Lewis have trade value and could be traded in the right deal. Of course, it would have to be a big transaction. Think Skubel.- 23 replies

Twins Top 20 Trade Value Series: 11-20
tony&rodney replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Aaron Gleeman has a new list up at The Athletic. I'm not sure what SF would target, but I think they want more than we expect. The Giants are also not expected to be sellers. Finally, the financial risk associated with Snell may be beyond the limit for the Twins. Still, I like the idea of Snell pitching for the Twins. Would Charlee Soto and Andrew Morris get Snell? I'm still guessing that an added starting pitcher needs to come with years of control. A good relief pitcher as a rental makes sense. Also, what would it cost to add Randy Arozarena? He also butts up against the budget however.- 24 replies

Minnesota Veterans Making Front Office Look Great
tony&rodney replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Santana really has exceeded expectations and credit should be given to him for his play and to Falvey for believing in Santana as a player. Margot has been fine, although it is possible that the Twins may have received similar work from Martin. Either way, the Twins did well in the trade with LAD because they received a useful layer for a small MLB contract and a decent prospect in Doncon. The Dodgers did well to reduce their payroll in order to sign the guy they wanted and received a brilliant shortstop to play in their minor leagues simple as a benefit to their young pitching prospects but not with any expectation of the player ever reaching their team. The heading is questionable. I'm not thinking that Falvey operated under tough circumstances in any way last offseason.- 121 replies

Twins Top 20 Trade Value Series: 11-20
tony&rodney replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
This has been a constant refrain on Twins Daily and it is fair. My thought is always the same - who would you trade for and what is the proposed player(s) going the other way? For example, if you wanted Crochet from the White Sox, what is the bundle of players that would entice the CWS to agree? Count me as a person who has a fair amount of trust in Lopez, Ryan, and Ober to compete in the postseason. I'm more concerned with the bats and fielding. However, I am still a fan of adding an ace to the pitching staff. I just don't believe people would accept the cost. More importantly, the Twins are unlikely to pay the price.- 24 replies

This is what happened, plain and simple. Now there has been a long silence since last offseason and perhaps the players can perform at a high enough level to bring back an increase in attendance and an interest in the club. As far as to whether Minnesota is a baseball state .... look at percentage of attendance of capacity for your answer or attend high school or college football, basketball, and baseball games. I don't follow the Vikings (since Joe Capp) and couldn't name their top five players without looking it up much less the defensive guys. How many people on this site would choose baseball if it meant they could never follow football, hockey, or basketball? It isn't really important or a big deal but St. Louis or Los Angeles are baseball towns and Minnesotans just have other priorities. While I (and others) will always follow baseball, it is not the first choice in this area. Such is life.

I cannot disagree with anything in your comment. The thing I wonder is who is available and what is the cost? Along with cost .... can the Twins afford to pay in prospects/players what is needed to reel in a decent starting pitcher?

The Ideal Trade Deadline Strategy - Go Big
tony&rodney commented on Eric Blonigen's blog entry in Eric’s deep dive corner
The Twins are not adding to payroll in a significant way this season or bringing in a guy who has future costs such as Gausman. The idea is a worthwhile exercise but one cannot ignore budgetary issues. The time for a blockbuster was last offseason (for 2024) and another chance will arrive after the World Series (for 2025).- 3 comments

The Twins made some egregious public relations gaffes last offseason beginning immediately after the World Series. The ongoing media debacle is a negative as well. I do not believe that the payroll (@$130 million) limitations hurts the team. Falvey was given a decent budget and had a number of options to improve the team last offseason. He chose to keep some guys, sit on others, make a couple of trades, and sign the players he wanted to fill out what he saw as the needs for the organization. The Twins did not miss out on anyone because of a lack of money, unless you thought that Falvey was in on Juan Soto. The Twins have a pretty good club and have exceeded expectations to this point in the season. Falvey has struggled with deadline transactions but a decent relief pitcher seems like a possibility. The remainder of the season will play out in the hands of those players already in the organization. There is enough talent to overtake Cleveland. Injuries happen to every team but if management puts the right group together and trusts the call ups/ fill ins to do their job the Twins should be ok. Maybe Julien returns to the leadoff role he managed last year. Hopefully Correa, Buxton, Lewis, and Kepler lead the team's offense with steady pitching from Lopez, Ryan, and Ober. Target Field is right next to the North Loop neighborhood which has many fine restaurants and fairly decent parking. When I drag my seven decade old carcass to a game I enjoy the neighborhood and the atmosphere at the games. I wish crime didn't exist at all, but hey this is The Americas ... founded, steeped in, and still selling violence as a way of life. The first five games after the break may play with Falvey's head and push him to hold or make an attempt to add a rental. We should not expect any large financial surprises.

Good athlete and has shown his skills in college. He has as good a shot as anyone. Now he gets professional pitchers and must learn when to swing and when to take.

I am still a believer that Brooks Lee will be a good MLB player, but we saw some weaknesses in the last week. The Twins need to be able to use their entire roster of position athletes starting after the break. If someone is injured, call up a player from AAA or AA.

Nice win by the Twins. Down a few guys we expect to always start but these things happen and the bench picked up the injured.
