  1. If Santana is not going to start much if at all, hopefully this will last a week or less so he can go back down and play everyday. If the promotion is for a week or less then it is a good first call up opportunity and learning experience for him so when he gets the call up to start he will know more of what to expect. If he plays everyday even better. If the promotion is for an extended time and he is going to be on the bench, the Twins would be better off with Bernier up.
  2. Travis is hitting just like Plouffe is right now. If Bernier can kep this up for a lite longer and Florimo continues to hit below .150, I say bring up Bernier.
  3. I'd be ok with Pierre as a back up to Fuld. CF is a stop gap so its not like we are going to find a 5 tool player to fill in. Hicks is our best hope for that. If Fuld and Hicks can have a .320 OBP and steal 20 bases and solid defense that's enough for me from the 8th spot in the lineup for now. Although I do now concede Florimon needs to sit on the bench at least. I had figured he could hit .620 - .660OPS but apparently not even close.
  4. This is good news for Johnson. If he pitches well tonight he might get to stick around while Pelfry is sent down....No pressure Johnson...none at all.
  5. What we should do Sign Drew now What we should do with what we have Send down Florimon and bring up Bernier let Escobar start What we will likely do 5 players will start at least 5 or more games at SS this year and 4 will start 10 from Florimon, Escobar, Bernier, Santana, and Nunez What team ownership wants us to do Keep spending money despite the lack effort or assets to improve SS.
  6. Next offseason we should go after Drew, Lawrie and then Cabrera in that order. I am open to trades or other ideas as well. At this point, I would prefer to see Bernier up and platooning with Escobar. I did think that Florimon was able to hit in the .625 -.660 OPS range with 10 HR and 15 stolen bases. not great but enough, especially with the way the rest of our offense has come together. Not trying to get off topic but, I wonder who the biggest offensive surpise is this year? Suzuki, Colabello, Kubel, or Pinto, or even Dozier.
  7. In terms of value, Corriea is still pitching around 6 innings per start. He's throwing some good games and some crap. He's an ok option for a 5th starter. Meyer is better then Corriea but having Meyer as the 6th option is better than Johnson or Darnel Logan or May as there is a drop off in talent after Meyer. So the question is how much of a drop off is it from Corriea to Johnson. It looks like were about to get a sample of the answer on Thursday. At this point in the season it is more important to have options to turn to because there are so many more games to play. As we play more games there will be fewer chances of injuries though that doesn't mean we won't have them. Just less likely to have a rash of them or there will be fewer games left if we do have multiple injuries in pitching add that to some of our pitchers developing and it makes sense to trade Corriea to a team looking for depth. Oakland had 2 starters undergo Tommy John surgery this year and still have 5 solid starters. They do not have much left to turn to if there is another injury. mlbtraderumors.com speculated the other day that Oakland is essentially looking for a 6th starter. Corriea is a perfect fit for them especially as we pay down some of his salary over the next month or 2. I do want to note that I think our pitching is so much deeper than it has been the last several seasons.
  8. Oakland has 2 pitchers this season that are undergoing Tommy John surgury. MLBtraderumors suggest that they may be looking for a 6th pitcher for depth since they have no one left to turn to. That means they could soon be interested in Corriea. And if we trade him now and all of a sudden start having injuries to our pitching staff we will run out of pitching too as there is a drop off after Meyer and Deduno. Will May,Johnson, and Darnel Logan be able to fill in effectively if we replace Pelfry and Corriea and start having injuries?
  9. 1. There's no rush. We still have 140 games in the season. Better to wait till there's fewer games to burn a starting pitcher option. If we put Deduno and Meyer in the rotation then have an injury or 2 with 80 games left, we could end up with retreads in the rotation worse then what we have now... Although if our starters keep pitching this way it probably won't matter if we replace them sooner or later. 2. The comment about 35 year old Guerrier doesn't hold. If you can get outs then you can get outs it doesn't matter if your 25 or 45. The only way I see him coming up with the way our bullpen is pitching is if Burton implodes or injury. otherwise there are teams with bullpen issues he can go to after May 8th. I think Detroit is one of them. I don't think Hicks has the ceiling of Meyer so bringing him up early doesn't have the cost consequence that Meyer could. The Twins should wait till June to bring him up. Meyer should work on his new pitch with his instructors and work on his control. I do think he could come up now and be an improvement but leaving him down for 30-40 more days is not the end of the world.
  10. I predict the Twins will have 5 people start at least 5 games at SS before the season is out. and 4 will start at least 10. Florimon, Nunez, Escobar, Santana, and Bernier. Colabello will knock in at least 90 RBI on the season. He will regress but still be a solid hitter. Suzuki will be the RBI ninja on the team and surprise everyone with 90 RBI. The Twins will be a contender if Meyer comes up and pitches well and Nolasco and Hughes and Gibson continue to improve. Especially if we sign Drew to balance out the offense at SS.
  11. Right now it is more important for the Twins to have more options as more things can go wrong over the remaining 140 games. When there are only 70 or 80 games it will likely be ok to loose an option so to speak. We can trade Corriea and let Meyer come up. We will still have options available and the probability of needing all of them will be reduced by the fewer number of games remaining on the schedule.
  12. Herman is the perfect 26th man for the roster. Meaning he is good for those situations where a player gets hurt he can come up and help Pinto get more plate appearances at DH. Since Herman is not an actual solution he doesn't belong on the team for a full season. Right now everyone is producing above normal so we need to ride that out. Even Suzuki has 19 RBI in 59 AB. Arcia can spend a little time in Rochester. I would like to see him come up but with the 30+% K rate is that a good idea? It is when we need a hitter not when we are actually competitive. Willingham will be up soon too and that will cause a juggling of the lineup where Pinto will loose time and Kubel and Colabello will loose a little too. But as long as everyone has an OPS near .900 I don't see how we could bring up Arcia. Maybe when Willingham gets traded we can bring Arcia back up. or when the bat cool off. but ultimately its not a decision that has to be made until 20 day rehab assignment is over.
  13. Having a SS like Drew and getting Meyer into the rotation will make us contenders this year.
  14. How so? I didn't say they wouldn't trade them or demote them to the pen. but I don't see them releasing them outright. They will try to accommodate them if they can as they want other free agents to see they will be given fair treatment if things do not work out. It gives them a reputation as being a good place to go when you are a free agent.
  15. Pelfry is in more danger of loosing his spot in the rotation because he is walking so many people and because of the loss of velocity. Corriea and 2 quality starts a so-so start and 2 clunkers one in which he still managed 5 innings. That's about right for a 5th starter. He s at least chewing up innings at the back of the rotation. Pelfry will go to the bullpen first if he doesn't figure it out. Deduno will likely get the first shot in the rotation. The Twins will be loyal to both Corriea and Pelfry for signing below market contracts. So I don't see either being DFA'd but I could see one of them traded around the all star break, or Pelfry in the pen, or someone on the DL. (Pelfry is pitching like he is hurt with decreased velo and loss of control says something is sore and he is favoring that muscle and is going to injure another).
  16. I realize that next offseason there will be several SS available in Free Agency and the cost to sign Drew is a little high. But by not signing him they are saying that this season is a lost cause. as the Twins do have the money available to sign him. How much do they expect to save by waiting? I know the 2nd round pick is valuable but it is not likely to be that much more than what Drew brings us.
  17. For me the real concern is to get one of either the CF or SS to be able to hit. We can live with one hole in the line up but 2 will eventually catch up to us. Hicks is doing better the last week since we got Fuld who is also doing real well. As far as SS goes, I think the next step is to let Escobar start for a while and let Florimon be on the bench and see if he can figure it out. If not then we need to see about another SS. If Hicks is hitting I would rather have a good defensive SS then a good hitting SS. I am not opposed to tryng Bernier again as he can field and should hit atleast .220 with no power.
  18. The reason it makes sense to wait is now we have more options for pitching in case of injuries start popping up. Around July there is less season to need more options so it makes sense to bring up Meyer and trade Corriea thus burning a pitching option then.
  19. Obviously the Twins haven't signed Drew. With the way Hughes is improving and Gibson is pitching if one more starter pitched like they want to be out there then signing Drew would be the best move we could do for this team. And Twins management should be held accountable for not signing someone like him when we have the available resources and such an obvious need. Bernier isn't on the roster but is hitting in AAA and has a good defensive reputation. And I don't think it would be too hard to find someone to come off the roster for him to come up either.
  20. They'll keep Corriea in the rotation. He's had 2 quality starts and just missed a 3rd with 2 bad starts. He is at least pitching innings. That's more than Pelfry is doing and he can't find the plate. Pelfry is more likely to be demoted to the pen. But since his velo is down and he is more wild he may have an injury.... Deduno is definitely the one who should be reinstated to the rotation.
  21. THE Twins may want to do something additional to players who do this sort of thing. They definitely shouldn't be promoting players so they can start their suspension earlier.
  22. Next roster moves.... 1. Deduno to rotation with Pelfry going to pen or DL(if injured) 2. Burton to DL (if injured) and Guerrier recalled 3. Stephen Drew signed (if the Twins are winning they will have to consider this) if not then just send down Florimon and bring up Nunez or Bernier 4. Willingham comes off the DL with Hermann demoted to AAA 5. Arcia comes off the DL and is optioned to AAA 6. Corriea will eventually come off the roster for Meyer to come up but not yet.
  23. Yahoo has the Twins ranked 26th. Annoying yes, but when I go back and look at the standings there aren't many teams that are more than 2 games under .500 and the Twins still have one of the worst rotations. I don't think I would rank them higher than 20th at this point. but at the end of the season if the Twins remain at .500 then they should be ranked from 14th to 18th more than likely.
  24. If Florimon gets his OPS back to the .625-.650 range, He is good enough for now. His bat wouldn't be that big of an issue if Hicks was hitting. Florimon has around a .700 OPS since April 10th so the Twins should be patient with him for a few more weeks. Luckily the other 7 hitters have hit the snot out of the ball so far this year.
