I removed designated closer from my list of roster needs along time ago. I get more concerned when a pitcher like Ron Davis or Alex Colome gets the designation and keeps getting the ball. The go-to guy will reveal himself over the course of the season and we will need that go-to guy at any point during a game not just the 9th. It will be interesting to watch Baldelli work this staff with Gray, Archer, Bundy, Ryan, Ober, Paddack and Winder all coming North. I have a feeling that the fan with traditional viewpoints will have a hard time adjusting to it. My head won't bang against that wall.

The Padres should have tough 40 man considerations like we do and they have Abrams still hanging around not on the 40 man. They have lots of OF prospects but need a big leaguer OF NOW, Larnach doesn’t fit that need an OF now plus he would occupy a 40 man spot. Kepler or Kiriloff would be what the Padres want. I assume of course.

What Twins Over/Unders Are You Taking in 2022?
Riverbrian replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'm betting on Buxton Health because he just can't be unhealthy again... he just can't. His lifetime injury allotment has to be used up entirely at this point. If healthy he will blow past the 26.5 possibly reach 50 dingers and if healthy he will get those MVP votes to trigger his bonus. Correa... I'll take the over on both... He wants the pay day at the end of the journey. He will be focused. Gary Sanchez... I'll take the under. He will need at least 400 AB's to get there. I don't know if 400 AB's will be available to him. Sano... He also needs health but I don't believe he has used up his lifetime injury allotment yet. He has hit over 31 home runs once. Health and prolonged struggles are the reason. Wins/Losses... I'm taking the over... because the Twins are my team and I say so... Damn it.- 23 replies

Agreed... No need to be flexible if you can just rely upon a constant. However... the constant just isn't there. A total of 84 Pitchers eclipsed 100 Innings last year while producing a sub 4.50 ERA. That averages less then 3 per team if the bar is set as low as 100 innings and 100 innings isn't enough. Just 33 pitchers under 4.50 if the bar is 162 innings (qualification for an ERA title).

A little over 1400 innings are required of an entire pitching staff to get through the season. How those 1400 innings are allocated to each member of the pitching staff does not have to be (absolutely shouldn't be) locked into some static formula created a long time ago. The Rays wisely came to the conclusion that a starting pitcher doesn't have to start the game and they came to the conclusion that a starting pitcher can be reduced to 3 innings per appearance. The Rays also realized that a reliever doesn't have to have dedicated short work roles, they realized that relievers can be stretched to 3 innings of work if needed as they put together the best combination of arms to cover the real estate of 1400 innings necessary. The Rays know that any combination of utilization is possible if you just break the shackles of the traditional formula created by people decades ago. The starter/closer/set-up designation isn't that necessary. Just get outs and cover those 1400 with whatever combination gives you the best chance of getting outs every single inning. Forcing yourself into a traditional 5 man rotation leads to forcing a guy who isn't doing that good to eat innings just to keep the rotation structure. It leads to Matt Shoemaker getting 90 innings while Taylor Rogers throws 15. All you gotta do is free yourself of thinking that the traditional way is the only way. IT ISN'T the only way.

As Twins fans we watched Trevor Plouffe hold down the every day 3B position for 6 years and produce a career OPS lower than what Gio dropped down to last year. Yet Gio has some of us concerned? Plouffe was 3B only so Sano was moved to RF to accommodate Plouffe blocking up one spot. Gio is better defensively and can be moved to a utility position to accommodate Miranda or Nolan Arenado when we trade for him at the deadline. ? Gio can play a big role on this club by both playing 3B and by not playing 3B. Gio is the least of any concerns that I have. He's the Big Lebowski rug that ties the room together. Welcome to Minnesota.

Minnesota’s Farm System May Be Tapped Out by 2023
Riverbrian replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
I agree... if they skillfully manage things, having a 40 man full of solid choices is a good problem to have. Trading excess value gets more value in return and the system can hum along. My concern with the spillage is going to be the current crowding of the SP gate. We can only commit X amount of spots to the SP position on the 40 man and we are SP plump full now with guys who need to build up yearly inning totals and at least 3 more quality young arms that need to be added to the 40 man next year. If we don't graduate some of these arms into the rotation this year for next year it will cause spillage: Trading of players who haven't developed full value yet. Trying to get players through waivers, risking R5 exposure. If Bundy and Archer types stay healthy this year, eat innings and perform average to below average, it will limit how many of the young arms get a look see for Ober type MLB qualities or better. Without the look-see for Ober type abilities(or better)... it will be hard to trust fall with a young arm cold next off-season just to relieve the 40 man crowding. which keeps SP over stocked on the 40 and under stocked on the 26 which leads to more Bundy type 1 year deals just to be on the safe side and the cycle repeats itself. The can gets kicked down the road. I wish I could say that my scenario could never happen but... I've been watching this scenario play out for a few years now. There is large crowd of people waiting to get into the nightclub... if the bouncer doesn't open the door... someone is going to get hurt.- 25 replies

Another Outfielder Knocking on the Twins Door
Riverbrian replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
When they answer that question... please pass it along because I'd really like to know that answer as well. The only answer that makes sense in my head is that Baseball does promote too slowly and I assume they promote slowly because you CAN... because the service time rules allow you to and the 40 man roster limitations force you to. The system kinda keeps you chugging at a pre-determined pace unless you are a Spencer Torkelson type that is head and shoulders above. Those guys get sped up.- 15 replies

Minnesota’s Farm System May Be Tapped Out by 2023
Riverbrian replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
If they don't manage this skillfully. There will be spillage off the 40 man. Lots of people don't worry about this type of spillage but I do. In the past 3 years, our farm system spillage has produced for other teams... nearly as much as our farm system has produced for us.- 25 replies

Minnesota’s Farm System May Be Tapped Out by 2023
Riverbrian replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Options... the players you list have options. Too my knowledge... Celestino is the only player that will run out of options and force a put on the 26 man roster or risk losing him scenario. However, there will be some 40 man roster decisions that need to be made this off-season with Centerino, Richardson, Varland and Wallner (I'm sure I'm missing others) that could produce some spillage, It's the hopeful continued progression of Centerino, Richardson and Varland being players that we don't wan't to lose via R5 that could produce spillage. That is the main reason why Bundy and Archer gobbling up innings instead of Winder and Balazovic can cause a chain reaction bottleneck... IF EVERYTHING GOES AS PLANNED. We really have to start getting some major league miles on the mound out of our 40 man candidates this year.- 25 replies

Roster Becoming More Clear as More Players Sent Down
Riverbrian replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Great post. You are 100% right. I don't know what the percentage is between Right Handed and Left Handed pitchers in the majors but it's a pretty significant short side. Accumulating more AB's against left handers than right handers is hard to do unless you are being utilized for that exact purpose. The Giants, Rays and Dodgers are the three teams that I consistently mention as examples of how to utilize the entire roster. I really really want the Twins to emulate them. However, during the regular season... in the name of development... the platoon is something that I'm not a fan of. Ruf, Slater and Garlick are a little past the development stage but the roster spot that they occupy is never past the development stage.- 77 replies

Roster Becoming More Clear as More Players Sent Down
Riverbrian replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If an organization decides that you are only going to face left handed pitching. Bango... Zippy... Just like that... You are a platoon hitter. Once an organization decides that you are a platoon hitter, the organization is telling you that your value is very limited especially if you are on the short side of the platoon. Once an organization determines that your value is limited to this, Start the Egg timer... the buzzer on the career of Kyle Garlick will go off soon. His minor league stats don't suggest that he should be a platoon hitter but he is because the declaration has been made. He needs to mash lefties (also small sample size) to stay alive. Garlick won't be allowed to see right handed pitching so he has no chance of proving he can hit the Right Hander. Therefore no chance of getting used to the right hander at minimum and therefore stabilization of the MLB small sample split would be impossible. Clearing a 40 man roster spot for a 30 year old platoon hitter who won't be around as a 31 year old would be incredibly short sighted.- 77 replies

Celestino, Beckham Sent to Minor-League Camp
Riverbrian replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
There are degrees to how disappointed a given individual is over individual circumstances. The degree of disappointment can be similiar regardless of having control or no control over the circumstance. On a scale of 1 to 10 Having Chinese Food when I didn't feel like it... is about a 2, The plastic bag in my tree... is about a 2 The Twins carrying three catchers... is about a 2. I'll sleep OK tonight but I am open to suggestion on how I can get that plastic bag down. Players will be called up and players will be sent down. Come May things will be different. This is how the season begins with an opening day roster.
