  1. I can see that However, they have to know that Ober, Ryan, Duran, Winder, Balazovic and, Sands is how they get off the Happ/Shoemaker merry go round. If they would have went into this year like they did last year because they were afraid of the youth... Personally, I would have lost my mind. They are on the 40 man now... they are here... they are taking up valuable space, there is more to come next year. This year, they have to move forward with these young arms and start graduating them but at the same time... Due to covid and injuries, they don't have the innings built up yet so they got to augment, hedge bets, build an army. control usage. I think the pitching has more of a plan to it than the signing of Correa but I think youth was always part of that plan.
  2. I have almost the opposite impression. I believe that since the lockout, the front office has been off-script and simply reacting to opportunity as it presented itself. I think when they traded Garver... the Plan was to fill SS with Kiner-Filefa and that would have been the end of it... but... I think the Yankees surprised them by offering to take Donaldson's contract in order to get Kiner-Filefa and the Twins couldn't pass on getting out of that contract which altered the plan. Now they have the money to consider Story or Correa... They were probably not on the radar before Donaldson was moved. On the pitching front... I believe the front office has been beating the bushes from the get go... beating the bushes for perhaps the hardest thing to actually find. They found the right package with Cincinnati, they didn't with Oakland and now they have found the right package with San Diego. In the End though... This front office will be judged by Winder, Balazovic, Sands and all those young pitchers coming through the system. When the rotation looks like the 2022 Marlins, A lot of this type of craziness will go away.
  3. Agreed I think almost every team (there might be some renegades out there) has a value assigned to every player and I also believe those values don't vary much from team to team. I believe trades almost automate in a value sense. Ten Bucks for Ten Bucks in the end. The Padres are over the luxury tax... Over 200 million in payroll this year. They are actively (publicly) trying to shed Hosmer's contract for wiggle room because I assume they haven't got much wiggle room. This trade indicates to me that the Padres are financially capped and would prefer 1 year deals that come off the books while the Twins are rising and looking for value enhancement. The Money evens out the value that all teams consider but the trade itself fits the context of where each team is at in the cycle.
  4. It was stated well. I was agreeing with you by adding more words. Perhaps not well-stated by me.
  5. The Money evens out the trade. Paddack a starting pitcher under team control through 2024 is a much much higher value.
  6. Pitching is a numbers game. No organization can look at 5 starters and declare themselves covered. Options 6 through 10 are going to play a role.
  7. I removed designated closer from my list of roster needs along time ago. I get more concerned when a pitcher like Ron Davis or Alex Colome gets the designation and keeps getting the ball. The go-to guy will reveal himself over the course of the season and we will need that go-to guy at any point during a game not just the 9th. It will be interesting to watch Baldelli work this staff with Gray, Archer, Bundy, Ryan, Ober, Paddack and Winder all coming North. I have a feeling that the fan with traditional viewpoints will have a hard time adjusting to it. My head won't bang against that wall.
  8. On the other hand... We've done a nice job adding "PA" to the roster.
  9. Rogers and Rooker going to the Padres? I don't like it. This seriously depletes our roster of players whose last names start with "RO"
  10. No new updates. Falvey Lavine and Preller must have went to bed. I probably should to. No sense waiting up any longer. ?
  11. The Padres should have tough 40 man considerations like we do and they have Abrams still hanging around not on the 40 man. They have lots of OF prospects but need a big leaguer OF NOW, Larnach doesn’t fit that need an OF now plus he would occupy a 40 man spot. Kepler or Kiriloff would be what the Padres want. I assume of course.
  12. In theory… isn’t it possible that Larnach was pulled to head to Minnesota not San Diego. Larnach being included is the part that doesn’t make sense, Rogers makes perfect sense.
  13. I'm betting on Buxton Health because he just can't be unhealthy again... he just can't. His lifetime injury allotment has to be used up entirely at this point. If healthy he will blow past the 26.5 possibly reach 50 dingers and if healthy he will get those MVP votes to trigger his bonus. Correa... I'll take the over on both... He wants the pay day at the end of the journey. He will be focused. Gary Sanchez... I'll take the under. He will need at least 400 AB's to get there. I don't know if 400 AB's will be available to him. Sano... He also needs health but I don't believe he has used up his lifetime injury allotment yet. He has hit over 31 home runs once. Health and prolonged struggles are the reason. Wins/Losses... I'm taking the over... because the Twins are my team and I say so... Damn it.
  14. Agreed... No need to be flexible if you can just rely upon a constant. However... the constant just isn't there. A total of 84 Pitchers eclipsed 100 Innings last year while producing a sub 4.50 ERA. That averages less then 3 per team if the bar is set as low as 100 innings and 100 innings isn't enough. Just 33 pitchers under 4.50 if the bar is 162 innings (qualification for an ERA title).
  15. A little over 1400 innings are required of an entire pitching staff to get through the season. How those 1400 innings are allocated to each member of the pitching staff does not have to be (absolutely shouldn't be) locked into some static formula created a long time ago. The Rays wisely came to the conclusion that a starting pitcher doesn't have to start the game and they came to the conclusion that a starting pitcher can be reduced to 3 innings per appearance. The Rays also realized that a reliever doesn't have to have dedicated short work roles, they realized that relievers can be stretched to 3 innings of work if needed as they put together the best combination of arms to cover the real estate of 1400 innings necessary. The Rays know that any combination of utilization is possible if you just break the shackles of the traditional formula created by people decades ago. The starter/closer/set-up designation isn't that necessary. Just get outs and cover those 1400 with whatever combination gives you the best chance of getting outs every single inning. Forcing yourself into a traditional 5 man rotation leads to forcing a guy who isn't doing that good to eat innings just to keep the rotation structure. It leads to Matt Shoemaker getting 90 innings while Taylor Rogers throws 15. All you gotta do is free yourself of thinking that the traditional way is the only way. IT ISN'T the only way.
  16. As Twins fans we watched Trevor Plouffe hold down the every day 3B position for 6 years and produce a career OPS lower than what Gio dropped down to last year. Yet Gio has some of us concerned? Plouffe was 3B only so Sano was moved to RF to accommodate Plouffe blocking up one spot. Gio is better defensively and can be moved to a utility position to accommodate Miranda or Nolan Arenado when we trade for him at the deadline. ? Gio can play a big role on this club by both playing 3B and by not playing 3B. Gio is the least of any concerns that I have. He's the Big Lebowski rug that ties the room together. Welcome to Minnesota.
  17. I haven't bought in yet but I have money put aside for the purchase. I'm waiting to see what the farm produces.
  18. I worry about both of them for many reasons I will be pulling for them will all might. Hope they both have sub 3's this year.
