I'm reading the comments and clearly Pagan in the closer role is of great concern to some. I Just want to mention that the Twins do not have a designated closer and that there are other teams that don't have a designated closer.

Nah... The popular opinion that... Rocco is detached from the organization, that other departments have stopped sharing scouting reports, data with him. The theory that Rocco is insubordinate to his superiors, not invited to the meetings, doesn't have Falvey or Lavine saved in his phone contacts and he has gone completely rogue... is much more plausible. Meanwhile, the front office just can't figure out how to remove this out of control, clearly crazy manager so they just say nice things about him in the press and keep bringing him back year after year. That theory... Makes Much More Sense. ?

The way it should work is: If Royce is playing better than others on the roster... He stays when Correa returns. If he is struggling and not getting the job done... He should go back down and go back down before Correa returns. Give Lewis a solid couple of weeks to a month to adjust and show what he can do and these things should sort themselves. I'm planning on the Twins being in contention and if in contention we have no room to award playing time to struggling players. I have no fear of finding significant playing time for Correa, Lewis, Kirilloff and Larnach if all 4 are playing well and if all 4 are playing well... we will be in contention. Good luck to Royce... Go Get Em!!!

Is the Twins Rotation for Real?
Riverbrian replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I believe Canterino, Woods-Richardson and Varland will have to be added to the 40 man in December. Balazovic, Sands, Strotman and Henriquez are on the 40 man right now in St. Paul along with Vallimont in Wichita and Enlow on the DL. Ryan, Gray, Ober, Paddack, Winder and Maeda are under control for next year at the major league level. Pitching depth like we've never had and for the first time in a long time it's pitching depth with actual VALUE that could be traded for a significant addition wherever needed on the rest of the roster. I'm buying Twins stock. And I also believe that we could do some things this year. I can't wait... and I may not have to.- 44 replies

Agreed Bundy was at 60 pitches after 3 innings so the question becomes how many more innings could Rocco milk out of him in order to preserve the pen if that is what he was attempting to do. The Bullpen was going to be needed to throw significant innings regardless if he had a clean 4th (Which he didn't). Also, we had a total of 6 relievers who did not throw on Tuesday... 4 of those 6 relievers who did not throw on Tuesday threw on Monday, and of the 4 who threw on Monday only Pagan threw more than 15 pitches. No Reliever has pitched in back to back days over the last week so the bullpen was pretty fresh. So, I have a question about how much bullpen preservation was necessary at the time. In the end though... it was the wheels coming off in the third that trumps the pitch count and bullpen preservation. I acknowledge the role that Celestino and Miranda played defensively that inning to extend the problem. However, In the 3rd inning alone Bundy threw 28 pitches. Almost half of those pitches were balls. Not to mention two home runs and a mound visit after walking back to back hitters on 9 pitches. I look at all of that and I fail to understand how he gets the ball to start the 4th. The Bullpen should have started heating up during the mound visit after the two walks at the latest. Well... Tingler will have a real fresh bullpen to work with tonight.

Agreed... the Twins rally is another thing that I considered. The team is fighting back. Bring in a fresh arm to hold serve. Let's see if they can keep fighting. Just spit balling but I think Managers are careful when the bullpen gets up and if they get up, they get in so they don't heat up for no reason. I'm assuming that once he decided that Dylan was going out for the next inning... it's a good chance that nobody was getting lathered up so the rally wouldn't have been part of the decision making. Maybe... Rocco is trying to show faith in his guy like he did in Tampa. Just spit balling because I would have had the pen going before the 6th run plated that inning. It's hard watching wheels fall off without a call to the pen. When the 2nd wheel hits the ditch after the first wheel bounced off the windshield of a Subaru it's time to make a call. Once the pen is up... they go in. I don't know... maybe someone was tossing in the pen. I'm just spit balling. In the end, I just don't get the extra inning of work for Bundy. ?

Agreed And it's possible that Celestino not reaching that ball was a consideration. However, the way I see it from my living room. 1. This wasn't the 1st inning he had already ate some innings. 2. His pitch count was already up. The bullpen was going to be necessary regardless of how he performed in the next inning. 3. This was the 2nd game in a row of hanging a 6. I merely question the decision but I don't feel the need to burn the house down over it. The team gets to compete again tonight.

I have nothing against the Reds organization but there is a part of me that would like to see a team lose 130 games during a season just so I can witness it.

Gotta admit. I didn't really understand Bundy getting another inning after hanging a 6 on the board. Tomorrow is another day.

Reevaluating Minnesota’s First Base Depth
Riverbrian replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Agreed Besides... If it turns out that Sano is out long term and Kirilloff continues to have nagging problems and we need to replace some power. 1B is the one position that a player that most of us have never heard of in other systems can be acquired for a low level prospect. Guys like Frank Schwindel, Ji-Man Choi, Luke Voit, Darin Ruf. These types are always out there.- 48 replies

Reevaluating Minnesota’s First Base Depth
Riverbrian replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
There are roster space limitations for how much depth that you can commit to any position. With that said: Sano, Kirilloff, Miranda, Arraez, Urshela, Sanchez and Kepler are all on the 40 man roster. SS, CF and C is miles from that kind of depth,- 48 replies

Let's Cut Miguel Sanó Some Slack
Riverbrian replied to Matthew Taylor's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
He doesn't need to be benched completely. He just hasn't earned the right to play every day. He has earned the right for others to earn more playing time. It doesn't have to be an either or proposition like there is nothing in-between. Play him but play him less. The ratio can change once he starts hitting like we hope he can. -
I've never heard of a losing team that had great chemistry. The designation is never applied unless winning takes place. The definition of Chemistry is muddy while the definition of winning is not. Therefore Winning creates Chemistry

When superstar players are given the rare day off... managers frequently plan that day off before an off day for a little extra rest. Monday was an off-day... it's not a surprise that day was chosen. Could Correa have pinch hit for Godoy... as mere mortals... do we know for sure that Jeffers (Who was scratched from the lineup) was good to get behind the plate? Also, we do know that Garlick and Celestino were already used as substitutes so Correa pinch hitting for Godoy and Jeffers putting on the catching gear would have completely depleted the bench. And here's the other thing... and I stress this all the time and I understand that some people just ain't going to buy what I'm selling but here goes anyway. I don't care what anybody thinks about the bench, Garlick, Gordon, Celestino, Godoy. They need to play to stay sharp just like everyone else. All the arguments about players needing work to stay sharp and rest to stay sharp applies to everyone! It isn't something that only the chosen 9 need (whoever they may be). If you want to start the same 9 every day and let the other 4 rot on the bench. When the injury to one or four of that starting 9 occurs and it will occur... now you have to insert the replacement after rotting on the bench. How sharp will they be when you are forced to ask for immediate sharpness? Playing time can be easily managed for a functional 26 man roster. And the other question... Who are our best players? Buxton for sure that's easy but is Correa our 2nd best hitter right now? Correa appears to be struggling a bit so is he our best on April 24, 2022? Is Kepler clearly better than Garlick? How about Sano? 26 guys who can play and do play is absolutely necessary. IF they don't play, they are not necessary. If there is a player on the roster who the manager can't play because he doesn't trust them to contribute... it's real simple... get them off the roster they are taking up valuable real estate doing nothing. Those roster spots are gold. Carry on Rocco... you are doing fine.

Twins Banged Up Backstops
Riverbrian replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Godoy is our #3 catcher at the moment and after one game in the lineup he is still our #3 catcher. He had a nice game so at this time and contributed to a victory so there is no need to drop him to #4 on the depth chart at this moment. I can't recall a single year that a single team was able to go the entire year with just two catchers doing every single squat behind the plate.- 27 replies

La Russa did state that Arraez on deck and the possibility of a Buxton K was his thinking. How bout that... Arraez protecting Buxton in the lineup. ? Myself... I walk Buxton for the DP possibility and force at every base but Tony has a few more World Series titles than I do. What a cool home run it was! Loving Buxton right now.

1. Buxton was incredible when healthy last year. He has been incredible again so far this year. It's possible that Buxton is indeed incredible when healthy. MVP discussion incredible. 2. Buxton has been so good that I don't think the April small sample size argument applies to him. He's been locked in long enough. 3. Thank You to that old school closer mentality. There was no reason to pitch to Buxton. His run didn't matter. Walking Buxton sets up a force at every base and sets up the possible inning (game) ending double play. Instead, the White Sox opted to bring the infield in and pitch to our best hitter... maybe best in baseball. Thank You to that old school --never give out an intentional pass -- closer mentality. Thank You 4. I hope Byron gets every single penny of that bonus. I drink to his health.

Game Score: Red Sox 8, Twins, 1
Riverbrian replied to Theodore Tollefson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Great post Rewarding bad performance with every day jobs is how clubs draft early in the 1st round. Allowing competition for playing time based on performance... is simple enough... yet not done. I will echo the "It's early" chorus but it isn't too early for some. Kepler's performance last year and Kepler's performance so far this year still scream out "I am not an every day player". Yet, he plays every day. I hope he turns it around but he needs to be fighting for playing time and there is seemingly no battle. Somebody should be allowed to compete with Kepler. -

I agree... they should manage his innings while ramping them upward due to 16 innings pitched... the last two years. Relievers do not have to be limited to one inning. Relievers can transition to starter. Give him the ball... and may he hang zeroes whenever they use him. I'm also not a fan of limiting one of your best arms to 60 innings of 9th inning work only.

Buxton doesn't have to directly tie his comment to Donaldson, when others who haven't met Donaldson are absolutely willing to do it for him. Social Media just doing what it does... Making sure every person is labelled.- 30 replies
