Three Offseason Decisions Already Hurting the Twins
Riverbrian replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Injuries have absolutely hurt us. Injuries are no excuse because Injuries were going to somehow someway sometime be a factor this year just like they are every year. It is completely fair to believe that the front office failed to prepare for a sure thing.- 144 replies

Three Offseason Decisions Already Hurting the Twins
Riverbrian replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I agree with you if these were the only two options. I would have taken Gordon for less money but this was never going to happen. We like oranges and the front office likes apples to the point that there is no other consideration. Gordon can't protect Julien from left handers... Farmer in theory can. The front office is absolutely locked into this. Margot was traded for because the front office is absolutely locked into this. Margot also isn't our primary CF backup that most here thought was necessary due to the Buxton fragileness. They are here to hit lefties. They have bad numbers against righties. #1. The advantage of the platoon split is absolutely statistically real. #2. 75% of pitchers being right handed is also absolutely statistically real. #3. The amount of hitters on the disabled list at any time during the season is absolutely real. Based on 75% to 25%... I think they are playing the percentages wrong by playing them right. The front office has sacrificed #2 and #3 to prioritize #1 because Farmer and Margot are now being asked to bat against right handers because injuries have changed everything and injuries were always going to change everything. Injuries have upset the apple cart.- 144 replies

Camargo was allowed to walk up to the plate with a bat. A pinch hit opportunity in a blow out. 5 games up in the big leagues... one pinch hit. Is our offense performing decently enough to keep anyone glued to the bench?

If he is sent down this year. He will have no options remaining next year. He has to earn his job this year. This is Larnach's last chance.

Is Matt Wallner Still a Viable MLB Bat?
Riverbrian replied to Cody Schoenmann's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I wouldn't have made the move this quickly but I certainly understand... and almost appreciate the immediate attention to what has been a problem. -
@Sherry Cerny I do want to say and I have told Sherry this before. I normally enjoy her writeups. This one... Well... Sherry... I hope you try again. 😄

Chia Pet went over it many times with you how Polanco could be implemented. I stated on multiple occasions on multiple threads that injuries were going to occur. Here's a post where I respond to your claiming that Polanco is a bench player. AFTER Royce Lewis is hurt. You are still asking who Polanco replaces in the field and using Santana in your paragraph. I quote you entirely and I quote me entirely. Posted April 2 Royce Lewis is out for two months after two AB's and you still want to make this same point? Like Chief pointed out... Manuel Margot was our opening day DH and you still want to make this same point? Alex Kirilloff was in LF by game two and you still want to make this point? Julien still isn't in the lineup against left handers. Santana leads the team in plate appearances. Willie Castro is our everyday 3B and you still want to make this point? It's just game three. Your paper lineup doesn't have any staying power. You are standing in the middle of a lineup already in flux around you. But... Nevermind all of that. Polanco would not be a bench player.

You understand what question marks mean? When I quoted you... I quoted your entire post so context was intact and others could determine what you meant. Please quote me in entirety so others can determine what I meant.

What are the odds? I don't know but I've stated it over and over and over again. With the injury history of Lewis, Buxton and Kirilloff the odds would have to be higher than normal... whatever they are. Here's a post from February having a pleasant honest conversation with Jorgenswest. Posted February 14 Great post as usual. Being a GM is a tough job and I'm not willing to hang them for the decisions that they make... after all sometimes these 1 year guys have good years and are worth the money. However... the failure rate has become high in my opinion and the most simple thing that you can do is not let them double down on the mistake. Spending the money is a mistake but the money spent can't hurt you unless you make the bigger mistake of letting the money spent mistake step to the plate continuously or take the mound continuously. The bottom line to me is pretty simple. A vet on an expiring contract has to perform at the very least average because you can find at least average or close to average waiting in the wings below. Agreed on the short side Platoon. The true short sider (Garlick for example) is a waste of a roster spot. In the case of Farmer... I'll bet anyone money that he will face more right handers than left handers this year. You can set up these pretty platoons in the off-season... they will be blown apart before April is over due to injury or poor performance... and in order to keep the platoon integrity you are signing Luplow and signing Luplow over promoting Larnach for example because of short side splits is just going to kill Larnach.

Which was what I was asking if that was what the OP was stating by declaring that "Trading Polanco to secure his spot on the team was a good decision by the front office". Why would his spot need to be secured unless the OP assumes that Polanco is the better player?

If you insist. There are more... but 2 fairly quickly should suffice. April 2 This is true only if the twins were willing to devote a roster to a player who is primarily a DH. Most teams don't want to devote a spot to a DH and if the twins were to do so Martinez made more sense. Who does he replace in the field? Julien is the superior and cheaper player at 2B against RHP. Farmer is the superior player a 2B against LHP. Lewis the much better player at 3B. Kirilloff is the equivalent player at 1B against RHP and much cheaper. Santana is the superior player at 1B against LHP. So, when is he the preferred starter? There is also the issue of having room on the roster for Brooks Lee. April 4 This is your opinion of who he starts over. If the twins agreed with you, Polanco would still be here. They don't want a full-time DH and neither do most teams. And, if they wanted a full-time DH, Martinez would have made much more sense. They would have a better hitter, a good RP, and two good prospects. In addition, he is an inferior choice over Kirilloff against RHP and Inferior to Santana against LHP. The only time he would not be an inferior choice is at DH.

You have consistently used Santana in your model to justify the trading of Polanco.

First Off - Polanco wRC+ is 110 Things change fast in a small sample size. You gotta try and keep up if small sample size is your weapon of choice. 2nd Off wRC+ - Here are some more numbers. Which ones do you want to ignore? Do you want to ask the question... In what way are any of these players below better than Polanco? Castro 36 Farmer: 18 Santana: 11 Kepler: -62 Crawford: 56 Garver: 46 Julio Rodriquez: 40 Nolan Jones: 47 Devers: 102 Arozarena: 63 Oneil Cruz: 74 Harper: 81 Castellanos: 26 Boegaerts: 69 Santander: 63 Lindor: 48 Jose Ramirez: 98 Matt Chapman: 66 Carroll: 82 Swanson: 93 Bellinger: 54 Arenado: 93 Goldschmidt: 54 Vlad Jr.: 103 Bichette: 79 Bregman: 96 Third off: You and I have had a lot of discussions on this. Show me where I said Polanco is better than Julien. I've said Polanco wouldn't be a bench player! I've said that Polanco and Julien can be on the same roster. I've said that injuries are going to occur I've said your paper lineup of a Julien/Farmer Platoon, Kirilloff/Santana Platoon, Lewis and Correa being better than Polanco won't last before April is done. I've said that Rocco doesn't let Julien hit left handers. I've said that Rocco lets Polanco hit both left handers and right handers. I've said that Santana will play every day. I've said that you put words in other peoples mouths. And you've done that again.

I don't disagree. I'm a Julien Fan. I won't use small sample size volatile defensive metrics to support my position but I think he is doing well defensively so I don't have any issues with him wearing a glove on his hand. I think his bat is plus plus. I'm happy that Rocco has been forced to give Julien AB's against southpaws so he can improve his game furthur more. What I strongly disagree with is the pretzel logic used to claim that trading Polanco was a good thing to secure a position for Julien.

Is Matt Wallner Still a Viable MLB Bat?
Riverbrian replied to Cody Schoenmann's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Yes he is still a viable major league bat... his kind of power doesn't grow on trees... just not at the moment. He may have to go down to find himself if he doesn't start figuring it out... much like Miranda last season. I'd say not yet but maybe at the end of the month if he doesn't start putting more balls in play by the time May rolls around. 17 K's in 33 PA's is a real bad start for a player with options remaining. We don't have to tolerate it if it continues. Just not yet in my opinion. -
Polanco and Julien can exist on the same roster!!! If anyone doesn't believe that. Enjoy your Carlos Santana.
