It would certainly look good to get a TOR in Cease. But this team needs offense much more than any Pitcher. Who's going to replace Larnach and Castro? How many black holes can this team employ? Seattle is proving that you need some better hitters to go along with great pitching in order to be a PO team.
If Castro is traded and replaced by either of these guys that is sickening. Sign Bader. Trade Castro. Sign DeJong. You just took three steps backwards in one fell swoop. Enough damage has been done already with the first move of Bader. Stop tinkering with poor fringe moves.
My own thoughts were if we're talking Ober, sure Mountcastle as a throw in. But it starts with Mayo and Bassallo. Nothing less. 4 possible years of Ober, when you count the 3 and a QO year if accepted. Personally, now is not at all the time to talk a trade for Ober or Ryan. I'm of the opinion that after 2025 we might want to move one of them. If Matthews, Festa, Raya,Soto, etc have taken positive steps foreward.
Appreciate your thoughts jm. If Buxton was your typical CF that was playing 120-130 games a year in CF I'd have no issue if his backup is a high defense guy that is a subpar hitter. That however has rarely, if ever, been the case. But for 30-40 games a cheap option is a far better option. But the potential platoon partner with Larnach and Wallner should not be a light hitting backup CF. If Wallner is sitting I want someone who can hit. This is not Bader. Sure he could bounce back but his history shows he is regressing rather fast at the plate.
Don't forget Willi can play SS, 2B and 3B. Bader cannot. I'm sure Willi could step in at 1B too if really needed. Castro's career trajectory is still trending upward. He was way over used at the end of season. Speaking of 1B that hasn't been addressed. Oh, but maybe it has. Think Gasper. I can see them kicking Miranda in the gut too by giving Gasper the majority of 1B play.
As the day has gone on and the more I evaluate this sign, the more I see that I would have liked to see this FO do nothing. I'm not anti Bader, but we just signed a guy for 6.25 mil, who will play very regularly. Who's career trajectory is going downward. And derailed once again the careers of our significant prospects and players.
This move also greatly effects Hellman and Martin. Hellman and Keirsey for sure have just had their taxi ride to St.Paul booked. Martin also likely. No chance Martin makes the team now. Bader and Castro will both have full-time jobs moving around from position to position. Larnach also affected. As long as Buxton is healthy, and we hope he is, Bader making the big Twins $$$$ will be cutting into Larnach's role. Just when he is starting to make headway. BAM!!! I also contend that when the trade was made for Gasper that he will have an ML job. Why even have a minor league system when you do everything you can to get in the way of your prospects???
We needed a bat, who would have even a respectable glove. We got Bader who we know from history will be in the lineup on a fairly regular basis no matter how bad that bat is. Many wanted to see Emrod be that bat. Now we can wait until multiple injuries to see if he has a future. Because we know that this team is very slow to move off of veterans on multiple million dollar salaries, they don't just get moved out. I have nothing against Bader. But offensively we just got worse and defensively Bader has been in regression. Looking at that lineup, why would we want a well below average bat in COF? But I think your lineup is accurate.
Bader has a +1 drs in the last 3 years. A 78 wRC in the span. It is what it is. I'm also in the camp that this keeps Emrod in the minors again. Unless they swing a deal with Larnach for example.
Agreed, uninspiring.
I don't like that his defense in Center is regressing to average. Still good in the corners, sure. But why would you ever want his bat in the corners? Would have preferred we just stay within the organization. But I'll cheer for it to work. Call me a doubter though.
That is an interesting twist Tony. Trade for Cease, depending on the cost. But trade Ryan, or Ober, and get a bigger load for one of them. With 3 years they'd demand a much greater haul back than Cease with one year. I'm an advocate of trading one of Ryan or Ober after this season. Prefer to move Ryan myself. This might be the best way to get an all Star impact bat here.
I would consider a trade for Casas a solid move and one that I could support at the right price. Ober or Ryan is not the right price however. Not at all. At most Richardson, even that is likely a bit of an overpay. Julien and Martin maybe more in line. NOT Ober. IF,Festa, Raya, Matthews etc continue to progress I can see Ober being traded after this season when he has 2 years of control left. The deal at that point would be a blockbuster. Casas is solid imo but just a player. Not blockbuster material.
It's who I expected them to sign two months ago. The price was bit higher than I expected. It's an ok move, but I concur with doctor, hope they don't do something stupid to follow this up. Like trade Vazquez for a flyer and go with Camargo at C.
I believe this is Falvey's annual "I'm the smartest guy in the room" foray. They got Gasper to be on the ML roster as a tandem for Miranda. As a 2B option. To play some COF. To catch. To knock Hellman off of the roster. Right now I sense that Gasper is already pegged to make the ML team out of ST. This is the big splash move. The creativity that we have heard about. This is 2025's Margot move. I don't like it.
