A Sneak Peek at What’s New at Target Field
sweetmusicviola16 replied to Matthew Taylor's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Some major updates to the team on the field would have been what could have created the most excitement. -
If both Richardson and Paddack are in the rotation together I don't see how the pen will be able to stand up when the two will combine for essentially 9IP in the two starts. And if they are back to back starts? GL on this one. Going to have an exhausted pen imo.

Brooks Lee is and will be the better 3B. The question is will he hit well enough? I believe he will but he is still unproven. As for Lewis I don't doubt that he can become a decent 3B. What I doubt is that he will ever stay healthy enough to endure anywhere. His injury history is a very proven one. And as one gets older you don't all of a sudden become less injury prone as a rule. Though Lee's back is also a concern.

Paddack will very likely receive the 4 month Twins obligatory pass. It is the Twins way. If Ryan though isn't amped up yet it is easy to see him missing a couple of starts or so to start the season. But beyond Lopez, Ober and Ryan I really want to see Festa in the rotation. Another way to use Paddack would be as a tandem pitcher. Do this with SWR. I'm not personally impressed with Richardson's 4 plus inning starts. But if he and Paddack could go out every fifth day and each pitch 3 plus innings that imo might be the most useful use of each of them. Otherwise having both Paddack and SWR taking up two spots in the rotation and pitching only 4 plus per start is going to kill the pen. If Festa isn't in the rotation then this pitching pipeline is a fallacy. I can see Matthews getting some seasoning at AAA to start 2025 but not Festa.

I for one don't mind ground beef. Love it, as long as it is 90% lean.

Correa is not a question mark. Except, can he play 145 games? Lee I believe will be a very good 3B. Except, his bat doesn't profile at third. If his bat would play as solid I'd most like Lee at 3B and I don't really care if he isn't a 30 plus HR hitter. I for one am willing to use Martin at 2B. But in ST he is only being used in the OF. This is a mistake imo. Lee 3B, Correa SS, Martin 2B. Where does that leave Lewis then?

Sure we can hope that Julien rediscovers how to hit. But what is ignored in the article is that he has always been an awful 2B. This is actually a guy without a position.

I would include SWR in a trade without even thinking about it. Not suggesting giving him away of course. Sure, he's an OK back of the rotation guy. But when a guy doesn't get you through 5 on a regular basis isn't good. His 4.1 IP per start last season was a significant contributor to the Pen falling apart as the season progressed. I hope Festa shows he's the guy as the spring goes on and has that spot in the rotation.

I agree on the statement "I would not trade pitching for offense, but I would for a promising young MLB ready Catcher." The one I would have dangled in Nov/Dec would have been Jhoan Duran for this catcher. Not from our SP's. Not yet. But I noticed a post from chepettit, this coming off season I also see one of Ryan or Ober being traded. This will be the time to do so if the prospects keep progressing. Ober I think especially will bring back a very significant haul. Both of these will be down to two years of control, three with the QO. We will then have the depth to deal from. Hopefully anyway. I do think Paddack does get dealt before the deadline. If he shows he's healthy and decent he might even bring back a useful piece. If he breaks down that is just the life of baseball.

Thanks Doctor. I will keep on keeping on. Everybody has their opinions. That's awesome. I have mine. But one thing I do that is different is in that I look at players as people. I don't look at them as stats on a spreadsheet. They are humans and each of us as humans have something inside that sets us apart from others. Yes stats are fun. But they only tell a portion of who a player is. So when I saw something in Martin in April it had nothing to do with stats. It was something you don't see come out in every player. Martin has an intangible that can't be measured by a stat. Not that I don't think he is capable of putting up some decent stats. I could care less that he was a first round pick. I could also be wrong in that he ever makes it in the ML, I'm wrong often. But I am not wrong in the spark that I saw in him that not every player possess's.

Start him at AAA when he is ready to take the field. He should be done with AA imo. If he progresses satisfactorily at St.Paul then a promotion by the all Star break should be up for consideration. I'm of the camp that guys spending 4-5 years in the minors is only hurting us. I believe that too long and guys get frustrated and they lose almost all trade value as well. If a guy is going to struggle when he is called up at 23 he is probably going to struggle at the ML level at 25 as well. ML struggle is part of the process for most every player, then again every so often Puckett or Mauer comes along and there is no struggle. Brooks Lee is a prime example. 2 more years in the minors would not have better prepared him. The 2024 struggles will help define him. If he can't cut the ML we know sooner rather than later. Keaschell should be offered more than a cup of late September coffee.

Lewis would be my 2B moving forward. Lee would be my 3B. Miranda at first. Correa SS. Castro for 2025 would continue to move around and give people a day off. The odd man out would be Martin. Yes he could back up Lewis. But that doesn't give him full-time play which I think he needs. He could also backup Larnach in LF. As I stated in another story, I believe Martin can play this game. But for him to reach his full potential that might happen best on another team. But Lewis would be my full-time 2B.

You are correct, some players need to be able to settle in to a position. I believe if Martin were able to do that very thing that he could be a solid ML player, for me that position would be 2B or LF. I remember back in the day players that were allowed this liberty. I'll name a couple from Twins past. Gaetti, Gagne and Viola. These guys took a lot of time and patience to develop into the players they would become. I give much credit to their Manager for doing this, mostly Billy Gardner. These three struggled at times. Stats said that they should not be at ML. But people that watched them day in and day out could see their futures. Many on here would discard them just as they would Martin. I saw something in Martin when he came up in April that was apparent in the players I just mentioned. I don't know if Martin will succeed like Gaetti, Viola and Gagne did, mostly because I don't think he will receive the same chance that they did. I also think some will applaud if he doesn't. Just some of my thoughts and opinions.

Gasper goes 0 for 3. He's been an ST hitting machine in the past. Came in 7 for 11 in ST. But his 0 for 18 regular season keeps him as the Terry Felton hitting equivalent.

The problem that I see for Keirsey is that he is behind not only Buxton and Bader but also behind Castro and Martin. Quite possibly Emma as well. That's a lot of injuries for him to even get called up at all let alone play if he does. The signing of Bader was a clear signal that the organization has zero regard for Keirsey. I don't expect him to get called up again, if they did have that many injuries I'd wager a trade or another dumpster FA that doesn't get signed by another team. That's my opinion.

The signing of Bader sealed Keirsey's fate. Back to AAA and he'll be behind 5 or 6 other guys when it comes to being recalled. And I concur with doctorgast, with Bader behind Buxton why would you force Martin to play CF in ST? I would guess it is because they have no intention of playing Martin at 2B his best position. I'm guessing Martins fate is sealed as well. "He wasn't good enough coming out of ST and didn't shine in CF so we'll stick him at AAA to get some more seasoning."

Doctor, I like Keirsey as a player a lot. But I would like to see him get traded and the sooner the better. Preferebly before ST ends. He has done everything asked of him to get an authentic shot at being an ML player but he will not get it here. He will be 28 in May and now age will be used against him. He should be traded but this org will not because they are greedy and want to keep him down as a 5th or 6th option for injury. No regard for the player himself.

Sorry but no Keirsey will not make the team. He can't even earn a spot unlike Bader, France and Gasper. Miranda will have to earn playing time unlike Bader, France and Gasper.

What I read from our leadership is that the blame has been laid at the feet of Popkins the former hitting coach. I'm not defending Popkins but he was merely following the philosophy that the organization has followed for years. Good and convenient way for Falvey and Balldelli to use Popkins as a scapegoat. The fact ignored is the team that Falvey and Baldelli have put together feasted upon bad teams. Then proceeded to tank against the better teams in Aug/Sept. Does the history of 2024 matter as far as 2025 success goes? Maybe not. But at least Derek and Rocco tell the full story of the past failure. You'd actually look better in moving forward if you did. Don't blame a now gone hitting coach for what you had long preached and drafted for the organization to do.
