  1. I respectfully disagree. Maybe Baldelli is playing chess. I will play checkers and have the manager say, "Let's see -- I have a young developing player, Wallner. He is 2-2 today. It's important to show the young man that I have confidence in him. Not going to have a .215 catcher hit for him." This kind of demonstration of belief in a person is part of the game. It's a long view in developing a ballclub. Pulling Wallner was a resounding, "I don't trust you." Very wrong message, IMHO.
  2. Josh Donaldson has a torn right calf and could miss the rest of the season. He would finish his Yankees career having hit just .207/.293/.385 while missing 159 of a possible 324 games and getting paid $51.5 million. Donaldson will be a 38-year-old free agent this offseason. Thank you Cash($)man.
  3. Smeltzer, pitching for Jax Shrimp, AAA for the Fish. 6.10 ERA, 1.67 wHip Sanchez. Had the Detroit/Padres game on radio. Sanchez catching for SD. Hitting .180.
  4. Beautiful tilth in that soil. I have worked like a bugger for past 10 years to improve mine. Prior owner had 70 years of chemicals; every year, rinse, repeat. I sow winter rye for green manure every year, sickle, and turn over in the Spring. Straw mulching around plants. Turned over. Aged horse manure. Still working on it.
  5. While I agree for your sentiment for the man, he has no business on the mound. When you can't control a 98mph, someone could be injured for life. 3 hitters beaned in a row clearly indicates he has no idea where the ball is going. He needs to shut himself down.
  6. "Pohlad expressed a sense of urgency that has opened eyes amongst those who follow the Twins closely..." I believe the line was for public consumption only. Your byline includes "If Baldelli is fired..." 'If' is the operative word in the clause. Not going to happen. Loved Cruz as a player. Personality strikes me as a nice man but not sure there is leadership as an attribute. Teammate yes; manager doubtful. Hitting coach, possibly. Mere opinions from the recliner. Heck, my grandson works me over in ball now. Missed throws seem further away than they used to be.
  7. I have told you privately but will add it publicly. Superb work on the draft selections, Ted. db
  8. Wed, Jul 19: Berrios/Darvish on Toronto radio now, 590. Berrios 2-hits thru top of 5th. 0-0.

  9. Don't worry, you won't have to bear it tonite. He has been replaced by Wallner at DH: https://www.mlb.com/gameday/twins-vs-mariners/2023/07/18/717350/preview
  10. Someone mentioned this in the game thread last night --- Gray does fine but if he begins to get runners, he is almost afraid to use his command of the strike zone and BBs the entire world. I thought it was very insightful. Gibby-like on steroids.
  11. Cardinals can afford to rebuild. Attendance is averaging over 41,000, actually up a few hundred over 2022 despite a horrible year. Spoiled: been at Busch Stadium. A knowledgeable, loyal base, attending group. Trades? Not interested. Going after Goldy or Arenado is a straw-man approach to fix fundamental problems. Would have to surrender too many prospects. Focus on 2024 and beyond.
  12. This comes from Baldelli's inability to view things on a macro level. He is consumed by data and loses a feel for the game, his players, and a larger picture of his role as a leader. He has not grown into his position. E-Mgr.
  13. First place is immaterial to me. What I am interested in is quality ball. We don't have that. Offense is anemic -- leadership is absent. Stats trump a sense or awareness of his players. My fear is that the FO is going to dump a bunch of prospects at trade deadline in an effort to shore up glaring holes. It will take more than one or two trades to rectify this dysfunctional organization.
  14. Sonny, Sonny... "Good nite, Mrs. Calabash, wherever you are."
  15. The whole thing is baffling. He is a boat anchor on the DH role. Working from memory, but I think he is 1-28 with 18 Ks in his last 28 attempts. Gladden says Baldelli told Buxton that "he has to work it out." Gladden agrees with that! Drop him to the 8 or 9 spot if you are going to employ that. Better yet, put him on the IL and let the team rip it loose with a youth drive. Bizarro Baseball is here.
  16. A VP I worked with had a son working on dark matter. I asked him to explain it to me in layperson's language. I walked out 20 minutes later and couldn't even fill a cartoon bubble with anything I understood.
  17. Bill got it from Reinhold Niebuhr, a Lutheran theologian.
  18. Well done.
  19. Get 'er up...

While I agree with you, Twins won't do it. They are not prepared to eat, what $5.5MM?
