  1. Yeah, and even though it's flat and straight, he can't throw it over the plate when leading by two touchdowns...
  2. The funny thing is that the game could have been played yesterday (according to Rocco's comments). They have a different standard out in CA. I remember once when living in northern CA having my weekend ruined when the A's cancelled their game against the Twins the day before the game was to played because of the forecast of rain. I went to the stadium anyway on the day because it wasn't even raining, but it really was cancelled! I love the lineup roulette. It keeps players fresh. De Jong will probably be sent down...I mean Adams.
  3. I agree completely. It seems unlikely that his career is over. Over long stretches, he really had been lights out and then, suddenly he can't get anyone out? There must be something that changes in his delivery...maybe it is such a small change that it is almost imperceptible.
  4. Today's game was really one of my favorite games (I say today's; I suppose I should say last night/this morning's game; it all gets jumbled when spanning the Pacific Ocean) and also the first game against the Angels at the Big A (do they still play there?). Last year, I sincerely doubt we would have won either of those games. In the opening game (the 3-1 victory), the 2018 Twins would have almost certainly squandered the lead as the 2019 Twins also proceeded to do, but eventually the 2018 version would have almost certainly lost the game in the 8th or 9th inning. In the 8-3 win, the 2019 Twins did something they haven't really done even this year. They locked things down and came roaring back to win. For me, this was Pineda's best performance. Sure he gave a home run to Trout, but it's going to eventually happen when you play the Angels and after his wild pitch, he could have just phoned it in, but instead, he got tough and started really pitching well. Besides, he didn't give up 6 hits to La Stella, which was a refreshing change of pace. Also, the Twins mounted a comeback against a very decent Angels bullpen, and they delivered a number of big hits with two outs. This time they completed the comeback by not only tying the score in one inning but putting the game away in the next. Arraez........(no words).
  5. The Good: Great win (although I feel bit sorry for Odorizzi, who deserved a better fate, but he was also 'good'). Ryne Harper pitched well again (and it's a pity he was charged with the run, but that's baseball). Sano's blast. Rogers after La STELLAAAAAAAAAAAA! Parker. Arraez!! Defense and pitching! The Bad: The offense in general. Rogers' pitch selection to La STELLAAAAAA after 0-2. The Ugly: Injuries on consecutive plays for the Angels. The umpire was terrible according to mlb.com's pitch locator. His strike zone was quite inconsistent throughout the game.
  6. I hadn't heard this, and it does make me curious. Was he resistant to bunting? Did he claim he couldn't bunt? Those are the only two reasons I can think of for not being "able" to bunt.
  7. I'm glad to see Zack pitch better. He might be the next call up in a pinch situation...since we've seen Stewart a couple of times, why not bring up Littel again?
  8. Kikuchi is starting to get in his groove. He's a tough pitcher. I've seen him pitch a number of times in Japan--a couple of those times, he was virtually unhittable.
  9. Very interesting stuff. I think your point about rolling the hands over upon contact is the the most significant difference. It's hard to say if this is the final version of the Buxton stance, but at least at the moment,it seems to be working.
  10. Another very nice wrap. 92 mph fastball right behind him, but you could almost guess that was coming. I'm not all that sure Lewis was trying to show them up, but it's hard to know.
  11. Maybe, but that slices both ways. Buxton has been hot for about 10 days, so now he should be leadoff?
  12. Today's game was just gravy, but they gave themselves a chance to win, but the dam eventually started leaking water. It was strange that May reverted back to the mystery man after recording two outs, but that's the way it goes. Again, I think Rocco will move Buxton to leadoff when he thinks he's ready. It starts with consistency. The leadoff hitter needs to get on base consistently. The definition may be different among various contributors here, but the reality is that from April 21 through May 3, Buxton hit .182 with only (2) extra base hits, to go along with (9) strikeouts and only (2) BBs. For me, that is too long a stretch of inconsistent plate appearances to warrant the leadoff spot. I still think he should start bunting. He could probably corral the leadoff spot if he occasionally dropped one down. Polanco did it today with great effect. (Puckett used to do it quite often as well.) If the bases were empty, it would almost be like wacking a double.
  13. What a difference a year makes!! I do remember sleepless in Seattle last year. 2018 (3 games) Record 0-3 Runs 5 Hits 12 HRs 1 That wasn't fun for us fans and it probably wasn't much for Twins players either. It was dreadful. 2019... awesome! Record 3-0 Runs 36 Hits 45 HRs 11
  14. I still have hope for Vasquez. I think he just wasn't quite ready for prime time in his previous call up to the Twins. If he can keep things together down on the farm for a few weeks, I think he might stick a little bit longer this next time around.
  15. He's a streaky hitter. In case anyone has forgotten, his BA had regressed to below .250 just a week ago; now he's been on fire. Now that he's hot, there is all this clamoring for him to be the leadoff hitter. Rocco knows Buxton and how he should be dealt with. I don't always agree with Rocco about in-game decisions, but I think he really understands his players well, so I'll go with his instincts. When he thinks Buxton is ready, he can move him to wherever he wants in the lineup. PS: There is a nice article on Rocco. Someone may have already provided a link to it, but it is a very impressive article: https://www.beyondtheboxscore.com/2019/5/15/18618673/mlb-minnesota-twins-manager-rocco-baldelli-culture-success
  16. That home run by Cron was a monster blast. The Twins were just bashing the ball. Swanson wasn't exactly fooling anyone. As Tom mentioned, the Mariners didn't play well; but the Twins made some blunders as well--on the base paths and throwing the ball around as well. Those miscues are easy to overlook when you score 11 runs. Pineda is an interesting case. I thought today would be his best outing of the season. Again, he was able to get swinging strikes as Tom mentioned, but they still jacked the ball three more times. Was it his best outing? Questionable. I can say it was a win and he certainly could relax with such a large lead, but do I trust him in a tight game? Not yet...but I really want to!!! I'm thankful for the win; that's more than we can say about last year in Seattle. Last year after having beaten the Cards in St. Louis twice and playing .500 over a few games and then winning three of four games at home, I was optimistic that the Twins were going to right the ship in Seattle and all would be well. I couldn't have been more wrong. The Seattle trip (to me) was the most demoralizing series of the season; it exposed all of the Twins' weaknesses in one series. We then went into KC and laid another egg. We are already one win in the plus column at Seattle this year!! This is much more fun!! (We were 20-23 at this point last year as a comparison.)
  17. This website has a video not only showing Odorizzi's reaction, but also provides another angle, showing Schoop fielding the imaginary baseball and throwing 'it' to Cron at first. Cron totally believes that Schoop had fielded it, so when the other baseball suddenly appears, he thinks it must be raining baseballs and gets totally freaked out. I'm not sure why Schoop did that, but it adds to the hilarity. Here's the link: https://www.12up.com/posts/video-twins-cj-cron-missed-easy-toss-from-jake-odorizzi-after-being-tricked-by-jonathan-schoop-01dayeqq3hn3 (make sure you play the second video--the first one doesn't play--at least not on my pc)
  18. Well, for the most part, I think that Rocco has used the pen effectively during the latter part of games. Early on in games, he has made some less than stellar choices IMHO, but it is all a learning process I suppose. Hildy is an interesting case. He seems to be lights out and completely reliable for long stretches so that you even breathe a sigh of relief when he comes in to save the day. Then, it is like a switch is turned and he really can't get anyone out in any situation and you hold your breath in the hopes that someone might catch one of the line drives. This was the case last year as well. My point is, the natural emotional reaction is to say that he's become trash, but there must be a rationale behind his Jekyl and Hyde performances. I seriously doubt that he is washed up and if he can his head screwed on straight or fix his mechanics, he can be a great help to the team. At least with Hildy, you know what version you are getting. Right now, we are getting the Mr. Hyde version.
  19. I'm sure it will be added to MLB Oddities version 4 on Youtube. Cron already appears in one of those videos (as a Devil Ray) when he hit a pitch after it bounced in front of the plate (a flyout to left field). Amazingly, I watched that yesterday. I thought to myself that I had never actually seen that before (a batter making contact on a bounced pitch and hitting a fair ball--I wasn't even sure it was legal but apparently it is). What is so weird is that last night I was watching a game between the Yomiuri Giants and the Hanshin Tigers and in the top of the 7th inning, a Hanshin player did exactly the same thing by hitting a bounced pitch fair--a groundout to the catcher. My jaw dropped, but just to show you that baseball is one crazy game, in the bottom of the 7th, a Yomiuri player did the same thing. He hit a bounced pitch back to the mound. It was like the Twilight Zone. It would be great if someone could actually deliver a base hit on a bounced pitch...has it ever happened?
  20. Rocco Baldelli nearly guaranteed himself a cameo appearance on Japanese TV by pointing out that Ohtani-san is one of the fastest players and that he runs like a gazelle. If the Japanese media find the clip posted here, it is almost a foregone conclusion.
  21. Do you think the Twins will bring Telis or Sawyer up to the big club?
  22. Well, we can all start breathing again at least. Ohtani-san will be on the news again tonight, but he might be shown getting thrown out twice as well as the praising of his hits. (Personally, I like Ohtani-san to succeed, but not at the expense of a Twins' loss. Last night on just the sporting section of the news, they showed Ohtani-san's home run six times; his single once; they interviewed him after the game and they also interviewed the TV broadcaster for the Angels' games because apparently, he uses the term 'big fly' to indicate a home run, so clearly they were waiting for Ohtani-san to hit his first homer of the season so they could interview him. They have also now made the term 'big fly' into Japanese(ビッグ・フライ)and I suppose they are selling t-shirts as the broadcaster was wearing one. That is all to say, things just tend to get a little bit over the top--especially concerning Ohtani-san who is loved by virtually all Japanese across every generation.) I wasn't really sure why Rocco switched from Harper to Duffey. It seemed like Harper was doing fine, but I really appreciated the switch from Duffey to Morin. I know that there are times when Duffey looks like Mariano Rivera (OK--maybe a stretch but it seems that way in the chatter), but in the context of today's game--clinging to a one run lead--I can say that he has been unreliable, so getting the hook was the right move IMHO.
