  1. I have a question for opening day. What's the snow depth these days?
  2. A well-rounded synopsis of the hand we have. The bullpen rundown is especially prescient in light of the fact that Odorizzi is a twice through pitcher during his better outings and that means long relief. We can ill afford having two relievers underperforming or getting dinged up; then the situation will go from suspect to "ring the alarms," but I have hope in the Twins' staff thus far. I think they might be willing to try some things. JERRY: They could at least try it. GEORGE: They never try anything. JERRY: What's the harm? GEORGE: No harm! I like the fact that this group is really open-minded in their approach, at least it appears that way at the outset. It could turn out to be a very, very exciting season. Let's hope we can get a couple of breaks (not legs or arms though) this year and finally, knock Cleveland off the throne in the Central.
  3. My only worry about Hildenberger is that he now has dead arm from overuse or is hampered by some kind of minor but bothersome injury. Those represent the worst case scenarios, but I also think that prior to his meltdown mid-season in 2018, he had been the most trustworthy asset (IMHO) that the Twins had in their bullpen. If he is fully healthy, it is just a matter of getting his mechanics and possibly his mindset back on track.
  4. Thanks for this. I've always liked the Royals all the way back to the George Brett days. If the Twins can't win it, I always pull for the Royals, but Nater79a's mini-video is probably pretty accurate.
  5. It's a nice synopsis of the Tigers and gives the readers a bit of perspective. I want the Tigers to be bad, so the Twins can take advantage :-). I do take issue with the assertion that Gardy turned a bunch of ragtag players into a force. The Twins had the base already built under Kelly. They were trending up. Gardy demonstrated in practically every situation that he was old school and formulaic, but was still blessed with having a very good, young roster when he stepped in. Nevertheless, his managerial gaffes against the Yankees in the 2004 playoffs should have gotten him fired, but let's just be happy that he is in charge of the Tigers now instead of the Twins.
  6. This looks like the best case scenario from my point of view. There aren't any perfect solutions, but weighing everything, I think this looks about right.
  7. Very cool to learn about this. It is always interesting to see the path these pilgrims have taken to get to the big leagues.
  8. Warning: off-topic post approaching...I just returned home from my gym where I got to watch MLB baseball during prime time--a first for me here in Japan. The gym area closed with two outs and two strikes on Chapman, so I am assuming the Mariners beat the A's 9-7, which made the fans in The Big Egg happy because they could see a win in Ichiro's unretirement party (of two games). Since he didn't get any hits, they showed him lining a foul ball to right field at least six times. Interestingly, two former Twins appeared: ロビー グロスマン & フェルナワドー ロドニ (Robbie Grossman and Fernando Rodney). Robbie Grossman pinch hit in the 7th and slapped a single to left on a 3-2 fastball and Fernando Rodney was three balls on every batter but only gave up a walk and a single. The Japanese announcers were fascinated with Rodney's classic pose, showing a replay of his pose for the TV audience (he did it before the game had started). It was fun to watch. The Twins will likely be on TV more this year because of Kikuchi and Ohtani, so let's, "Play ball!"
  9. I saw Pressly my requisite two times against the Angels. He had two blown saves. Blame can be laid at the feet of the pitching coaches from what I witnessed. I don't remember the first appearance, but in the second appearance, he gave up a two-run blast. Out of 16 pitches, he threw 14 breaking balls. His last breaking ball was hammered. He was visibly upset and struck Trout out with three consecutive fastballs--completely overpowered him. It was head scratching.
  10. Last year, I only got to see A. Reed pitch against the Angels (twice). By that point in time, he was already toast. His fastball had almost zero movement and the Angels scorched a few of those fastballs. He tried to blow a fastball past Simmons off the outside part of the plate. Simmons absolutely crushed it to left field. Reed scares me. So is he on the IR...or was that a suggestion? I am hopeful about Hildenberger, maybe because the last time I saw him pitch was actually two years ago. I liked May's approach last year. To me he seems like he has the goods to be a closer. The remaining members are 'those mysteries inside of a riddle.'
  11. Despite the big advantage to Mr. Austin, I'm stunned that they will actually have the three batter rule. This will have a dramatic effect on bullpens and strategy imho.
  12. Thanks again Nick! These are fun and thought-provoking reads.
  13. I'm not sure what to think of Buxton. I want him to be a force to be reckoned with, but I'm not that confident. I think it would be so great if he started bunting. Early in the Kirbster's career he often bunted to get on base, especially to snap out of a slump. It seems as if Buxton doesn't take it upon himself to bunt. I recall him bunting twice last year, both at the direction of Molitor. (Correct me if I'm in error.) I think it's a waste not to bunt with his speed. Mickey Rivers used to cause havoc because he was good at bunting, so the corners had to cheat in. It didn't matter much. If he laid down a good bunt, he'd be standing at second base more often than not. *Sigh*
  14. Nice presentation Seth. I'd take a two-year deal in a heartbeat as long as he is physically sound. I don't see any comparisons to Lance Lynn. The rotation would suddenly look very formidable indeed. (He wasn't awful last year; and he's one year removed from going 14-5.)
  15. It's quite, quite interesting to see the numbers and in particular the bar graph. It does make us all breathe a little easier I hope. Still, and not intending to toss a wrench into the gears here, I also think it's tough to draw definitive conclusions due to the truncated samples for both Sano and Buxton (i.e., how much can those records be attributed to those players' absence/presence in the lineup and what other factors may have contributed to the wins and losses).
  16. Agree on the bat vs. defense conundrum. Polanco has had some very big hits, especially in 2017, but he also bounced some throws when the game was on the line.
  17. Her shirt says 'ramen' if anyone is wondering :-)...I wonder if she knows what it means...
  18. Rosales doesn't have the big bat (except in spring training apparently), but is he decent defensively? (We grabbed him to play 3rd as well, I imagine, didn't we?)
  19. Schoop wasn't fooled at all by the breaking ball.
