    Duffey did not throw at Mercedes. That pitch went exactly where he intended it to go. (IMHO.) Sixty years ago the first pitch in Mercedes' first plate appearance would have been in his ribs at 90 mph. Whether or not that is right and good, both players, both teams, both managers, and all four umpires would have accepted it as part of the game. And that would have been the end of it. Of course, sixty years ago no team would have had such little pride as to have a third-string catcher lob 45-mph tosses from the mound. And, of course, even if that had happened no batter would have swung at 3-0 in that situation. It all comes down to sportsmanship. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Or something like that.

    This is an excusable newbie error. Those of us who have been here a while have a high level of appreciation for RandBalls Stu's excellent satirical work.

    And most of us remember 2006. The first 58 games: 25-33. The following 104 games: 71-33. Although, keep in mind that that team's bullpen was a brick wall.

    His salary is immaterial. Is a pitcher making the major league minimum is allowed to pitch badly?

    Positive test results have caused chaos in roster management and in scheduling and I think this issue is one of the biggest factors in the team's poor performance throughout much of April. I think this would have been avoided had there not been employees who failed to get vaccinated. Not being an expert in employment law I don't know if the Twins organization has the legal right to mandate vaccination for its employees (as is the case at my place of employment), but if that right exists and it was not implemented then whoever is (are) the team's health and safety officer(s) failed in their role.

    I was in the left field stands in the Dome for Steve Carlton's last major league game. I felt bad for him too, but when the end comes it cannot be stopped. I think it was worth it to take a flyer on Shoemaker but I think the end is near, if not here. I suppose we could give him one more start on a very short leash just in case, but if the results aren't there it's probably time to thank him for his hard work and wish him well in his future endeavors. Edit: And Colome is in a very similar position.

    I'm not going to say whether I agree or disagree with this post, which is why I erased all but one word. But I wish to offer my compliments for excellent verbiage!

    And replaced with whom? Firing a manager is easy. Choosing a superior replacement is far more difficult and far more important.

    On Sunday Baldelli was roundly criticized on this board (including by me) for leaving Shoemaker in too long even though he had sailed through five innings. Today he's being roundly criticized for yanking Pineda even though he had sailed through seven. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. It's a no-win situation.

    Chris Atteberry said on the post-game radio show that Thorpe is starting tomorrow.

    These stats don't tell all, but I think they are worth noting. The Twins are fifth in the majors in team ERA. The Twins are fourth in the majors in OPS. Small sample size though it may be, if we can stay in this range all season I think we will do well.

    Sometimes teams lose because a player has an off day. Sometimes teams lose because the manager has an off day. This game was the latter.

    If the game is tied in the home half of the extra inning it would be tempting to bunt twice and win the game. Provided the batters coming up are decent bunters, of course.

    Every pitcher, starter or reliever, should be managed based on his own strengths. Don't try to force a strategy onto your pitchers. Instead, use the strengths of your pitchers to set your strategy.

    I misread PDX's post when I replied originally. Absolutely, air resistance varies with weather conditions. But as we get to the hot, muggy summer we will expect more carry, not less.

    Dry air is considered to be about 78% nitrogen (molecular mass 28), about 21% oxygen (molecular mass 32), and about 1% argon (atomic mass 40). The rest are trace gases. Water vapor (molecular mass 18) rarely makes up more than about 3% of the atmosphere but it is enough to slightly decrease air resistance on very humid days.

    Not counterintuitive. On the contrary. Water vapor is less dense than atmospheric gases. Hence, humid air is less dense than dry air and the ball will carry better. Air density is a major reason that Fulton County stadium in Atlanta was also known as The Launching Pad. First, Atlanta had the highest elevation of any MLB city at the time. Phoenix (just barely) and Denver have since supplanted it from that status. Second, Atlanta tends to have warm temperatures. Third, Atlanta tends to have higher humidity. Of course, the fact that it was a small stadium also helped a lot. I'm sure #44 was very glad to have played so many games there.

    Absolutely. But if the ball is more resistant to airflow it will be so regardless of air density. My initial guess, based on no substantive data whatsoever, is that the ball has not changed enough to make a big difference.

    Agree. I don't see a reason at this point to guess whether one is more important than the other.
