They are gonna have to start getting creative. Especially when rosters expand. Time to use the opener/primary pitcher strategy. We simply do not have good enough arms to go more than 3-4 at most deep in the rotation. They are gonna have to mix it up. And also hope Berrios gets back into form, Pineda gets healthy and Gibson can be consitent. Hopefully those 3, Rogers and Romo can get us through the playoffs. Because as I see it, that is about all we have throughout the entire pitching staff.

Article: Blueprinting the Twins Deadline Plan
Battle ur tail off replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Really, REALLY, hope this isn't the case. People have been waiting around a long time for our home grown talent to be here and producing to finally make a run for it. Well, here it is. Most of it is up here and producing but they need to add in order to give themselves a real shot to win in the playoffs. IMO, this trade deadline is the most important thing that has happened around here in a long time and definitely the biggest point in the careers of the 2 wonderkids we have running the show.- 41 replies

Why is that? If Kiriloff is able to be traded for a controllable top of the rotation piece, move him. You have some nice outfielders on your team. Lock up Eddie and Buxton and this team will be fine for years to come. If it is me, I go over to the Mets and offer a guy like Kiriloff + another 10-20 guy for one of those high end starters they have. It is OK to send out good talent if you are getting good talent in return. The iron is hot now, go ahead and do what it takes.- 41 replies

Article: Three Catcher Conundrum
Battle ur tail off replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If it were me, I just start Austudillo and use the other 2 as backups. I don't care what metrics say, I don't care who thinks who is better defensively. Austudillo is a ballplayer. He hits the ball and from what I have seen of him, he plays defense well also. Give the damn guy the reigns. If he is able to keep the kind of production from last year, spring training and his hot start here, he is a friggen all star. The other 2, I don't care how you slice it, are average at best catchers when you look at their entire game. -
Without knowing the numbers, it's hard to figure this. I'm fine with him not signing this year though. One more prove it year is fine. If he keeps improving, then they will have to pony up. If he doesn't, he will probably have to settle for the kind of money they offered him right now. Either is probably good for the Twins.

I'd guess both of these guys will be on one year deals. Teams aren't taking chances anymore on older players that are trending downward. It's too bad for them, but both are gonna have to bite the bullet if they want to continue making major league money. I would take either or both. Overpay for one year if you think that does it. Never hurts to bring talent in. And if they flop, it's only for a year. DFA and be done with them if you have to.

Article: Miguel Sano To Miss Opening Day

Exactly. The more things change, the more they stay the same. The medical staff for this club has to be the worst in professional sports.- 112 replies

Article: Miguel Sano To Miss Opening Day
Battle ur tail off replied to Parker Hageman's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
No it's not. It was either a lie to what really happened, or it has been treated by a 3rd world doctor. There isn't any cut you could make that would have a player out that long. Maybe he sliced his achilles tendon. That would make more sense. A cut on the heel though? Yah right.- 112 replies

Buxton's approach has always been his problem, more than his mechanics. He generally has swung at bad pitches. Guessed alot of the time and gotten himself into bad counts and situations. If he can control the strike zone a little better, that is the key.

I don't mind the signing. Versatile guy that can hit. He's good insurance for when Sano get hurt walking his dog or going out to get the mail. I still would rather have had the Twins spend real money on a difference maker, rather than bring in him, the pitcher from Texas, and the Angels pitcher. Use that money on one good guy instead of 3 marginal ones is my line of thinking.

I'll bet it is too. And I will also bet he ends up being the second coming of Logan Morrison.

I just find a roster spot for this guy almost no matter what. I don't care if you have to start him at 1B or move him around and get him 3 days a week all over the diamond. This guy is a baseball player and has the kind of fire you want around your team. Plays the game HARD. I think he adds a win or 2 this season, just by being around the club.
-
Maybe you aren't looking at the players you are choosing from here. All 3 are castoff players. My choice would have been to go with Sano at 1B and find a 3B. Could have tried to get Escobar back here to play there, or signed Josh Donaldson.

Do what you just did with any player and you can make them look good. If this guy didn't have this bad stretch, they would be great. Hope you are right though and he is just young and small.

And this was probably the right play. Put Romero in there if you aren't going to sign the best FA pitcher out there. Put Romero in and buy or trade for the best bullpen piece you can get your hands on. Even using the large lefthanded kid in the rotation would have been preferable IMO. At the very worst, the guy shows he has a little something to the league and you can flip him packaged up for something decent. The league by now knows Perez isn't worth much.

Just win baby and it would happen. When you suck 9 out of 10 years, you don't build a loyal fan base. Look at the Vikings. Yes, they have disappointed but have always been competitive and have had ownership groups and front office management that brought in the best they could. Their fans reward them for it.

Article: Show Me the Money (and the Wins)
Battle ur tail off replied to Matt Braun's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
This is why you employ a scouting department. You have stats guys, baseball guys, guys that need to know how these FA's tick, their work ethic, etc. These guys are PAID to do this stuff. Do some research and scout them. That is how you do things smarter. Figure out, is signing a one year wonder like Logan Morrison worth it? Or could we fill in with someone in our system and get similar production? How about a 1 year contract to a pitcher that hasn't been any good - ever? Is he going to be better than what we have in house? Or is this just wasted money to look like we are out thinking everybody? -
And if that were enough to get him and that offer truly is out there, then he would have signed already. Don't let the reports about Twins offering money get to you. What they are offering is below market value, you can bet on that. They know there is a very slim chance he signs that type of contract, but by leaking that info - The "Hey! We tried!!" is still alive and well as per usual.
