  1. The ONLY reason why freeing up money won't bring in a #2 starter is the Front Office's decision NOT to SPEND it on a #2 Free Agent starter. With both Polanco and Kepler being traded for prospects, promoting Martin and allocating 2B to Julien and Farmer, RF and LF to Wallner, Castro, Martin and possibly one of the prospects you just traded them for, you free up $20.5M for that starter. The problem child in all of the roster constraints is Buxton by his inability to be the CFer he was paid to be.
  2. Timewise it doesn't matter with Polanco. Other teams already know the Twins have good depth at 2nd base. His value isn't any more now than it will be late spring training. The only way his value goes up is if 2 or more clubs get into a bidding war for him, and waiting for that to happen is the only chance you have of getting his true value in return.
  3. So far the FO has made moves that don't move the needle. With the loss of Gray and Maeda they have gone backwards. Meanwhile other teams continue to take the cream of the crop. Nothing new here. It is the way this FO operates. A small playoff success last year has them thinking they are doing things the right way. Falvine has been in charge for 7 seasons going on 8 and have 3 playoff victories as their major accomplishments. Think about that for a minute. These guys continue to operate the same way each year thinking it works when it obviously doesn't. In past years we've been told they had plenty of dollars at their disposal to improve the team but always bypassed the expensive Free Agents in favor of trading away players, even batting champions (Arraez), for players of need (Lopez). Now we are told they need to trim the budget. The chance of them signing any significant Free Agent WILL NOT HAPPEN. They didn't do it when they had an almost unlimited payroll, why do any of you think it will happen when they are trimming payroll. It is ridiculous and insane to continue to think it will happen. The Twins are a 2nd or even 3rd tier team. Always have been, always will be. It's in their DNA and without a major change in ownership it won't change. They aren't going to spend like the Dodgers or Yankees even if they could.
  4. Running is running. Jogging is less stressful than running. Which is MORE painful? Running the bases or running after balls hit in the outfield. Again, running is running. We are talking about pain, not stress. Where did I mention stress to the knee in my post? Hmmm... can't seem to find it anywere. Pain and stress are 2 different things. Don't confuse the two or twist my words to fit your narritive.
  5. Here we go again. I will forever remember who Buxton is long after his career ends. A broken over-hyped player that did little to nothing to help the Twins win any meaningful games. I wonder how wrong you are about him being in so much pain he couldn't take the field defensively even once all season. I'd be willing to bet it was more of a managierial and FO decision not to play him there than it was his pain as the deciding factor. You can't tell me that runnning the bases was less painful than running in the outfield. If the FO had any smarts at all they would have shut him down completely by the All-Star break and had him undergo his follow up procedure then, making him even more ready for 2024. Not that that will probably make any difference..... Any betting man would figure he's going to get injured again anyway.
  6. The first thing Rocco can do is look in the mirror and see who throws games away. Too many times he goes with a get away lineup on the last day of a series resting his best players. It costs them wins. If you are going to expect the players to try to win every game when they play then the Manager should be managing games that way too. You speak of his experience yet he constantly makes the same mistakes, batting guys that can't drive in runs in the middle of the lineup, putting guys in the leadoff spot that are terrible at getting on base, rarely if ever tries to advance runners, or never goes for 1 run when that is all they need, instead hoping for the 3 run homer when they can't even get 2 hits in an inning. Platooning and changing the lineup almost every day doesn't automatically make you a good manager. It makes you look like you don't know who to play and where to put them in the lineup.
  7. If their bullpen philosophy is to bring in guys that are part of the dumpster diving variety then yes, he fits perfectly. The bullpen has always been low priority for this FO and the signing of Staumont proves they haven't changed their tune.
  8. I say No. Go with Buxton in CF everyday and if he can't play there show Falvine the door. Constantly having to coverup mistakes does not make you a good GM. Then get Buck to agree to a trade and solve the problem once and for all. Only the Twins go into every season required to have a backup player for one of the players they are trying to build around. Sorry, the mistake is, trying to build a team around someone who rarely plays. If the budget is to undergo tightening and subtraction you don't waste that money on 2 players where one should be sufficient. Maybe they should trade for a #1 Ace Pitcher to play in case Pablo Lopez gets hurt and can't play. We know that's not going to happen but in theory it's the same thing they have to do with Buck every year and most of you see no problem with it. In fact, article after article gets written about who Buxtons backup should be. I think for once it should be Buxton and if he fails to stay healthy, ask him to retire.
  9. While these 3, maintaining their level of play they displayed as rookies, is important. It will be even more important for the 2 highly paid superduds (Correa & Buxton) of 2023 to produce up to their expected level in 2024. Especially if the 3 rookies that outplayed them do regress. I know it is always a big IF, but IF Buxton can stay healthy and play at a level like he did in 2021 for a full season and IF Correa can play at a level like he did in 2021 or 2022 then the way Lewis, Wallner and Julien play won't NEED to be that prolific. The Twins need to get their moneys worth from those they are paying it to. Period!
  10. The Twins have come a long way from their “Bomba Squad” identity, with a new style overall Huh? Their approach hasn't changed. It's still swing for the fences. The only thing that HAS changed is their ability to be prolific at doing it. Makes a difference when the ball isn't juiced..... I'd say watching most of their at bats last year they're still trying to be Bomba Squad #2.
  11. I understand the work involved in writing up these articles and appreciate the effort in doing so, but isn't this just another one of those written on pure speculation? Is there any indication from anyone in the Orioles organization that they are taking offers for Kremer. If not, then there are 28 other clubs besides the Orioles that we could speculate have a pitcher or two that the Twins could trade for. Give us something with teeth that is in the works. If ya ain't got it then you might as well put the keyboard to rest. Speculation comes true about one time out of a hundred and it isn't worth the time to write about or read.
  12. If Buck was worthy of an extension with his injury riddled past then taking a chance with Lewis and doing the same should happen sooner rather than later.
  13. What is Rocco Baldelli's Seniority Worth in the 2024 AL Central? Zilch!
  14. Grisham looks to be a cheaper version of Gallo. Which means this FO is likely to jump at the opportunity to get him. I'll be more emphatic and say, H E double L toothpicks NO.
  15. Not sure why there is so much love for Kepler. He's a part-time hitter playing full-time. Take away his 2019 season and his 2nd half 2023 season and the only worth he's provided is defense. I guess he looks good because he plays next to Buxton who's even more than a part-time hitter, he's a part-time player completely. Now add in LF and the Twins haven't had anyone there that could hit since Eddie left. That's a whole lot of nothing from your outfield for too long already. Gee, I wonder why this team, at times, struggles to score runs. I'd start the year with Wallner, Castro and Larnach in the outfield and give Martin or Gordon the 4th OF spot. The past 3 years has proven the guys they've went with aren't that good if they can even play. Time to try something different and let the young guys get the chance, to learn from their mistakes, and actually see if they are any good, especially if the FO doesn't sign a #2 Starter to replace Gray.
  16. " we can't say for sure whether Buxton will ever play center field again--let alone do so on a regular basis. " Unfortunately for Twins fans and for Buck, you could have made this statement a long time ago. He hasn't played on a regular basis most of his career.
  17. A headline reads: "We need to chill" :The offseason is going to take a while to develop. All that really means is, the Twins FO will let other teams dictate the market. They are not leaders but followers. It is too much too ask for them to take the initiative and go out and get what this team really needs before other teams take the cream of the crop, Their overwhelming patience will once again mean they will have to take from the leftovers or over-pay with in-house talent or top level prospects to actually improve the major league roster. Of course, maybe "improving" the roster is not a goal, Saving money is the real goal and we should be happy they are being cautious. Amazing what a difference 1 year makes.
  18. I agree. But having $50M come off the books in 2029 to help finance that extension will matter when and if they get that done.
  19. This is the guy you build a team around. .300 hitters with the potential power of 40-50 HR's a year don't come around very often. Thank goodness that both of Correa's and Buxtons contracts come off the books the year he becomes a Free Agent. 2029. Their going to need that money to keep him.
  20. You are right about the 20 HR's per year but hitting .300 has only happened once and close to .300 has only happened once. He's more likely to hit .275-.280 which has happened 4 times. Maybe I'm just splitting hairs but let's not make him better than what he really is. What would really be nice if if he would play and perform at that level for 155-160 games like the other top shortstops in baseball, since he's getting paid like one.
  21. If only they played games on paper. If the Twins don't make at least 2 significant moves, a #2 starter and a good CF that can play everyday, Detroit will give them all they can handle and I wouldn't bet against them to win the division. The X factor is the Manager. One knows how to manage and the Rocco over-manages.
  22. You have to remember who you are talking about. If his bad knee is finally healed there is another knee he'll probably injure. Or pull a hamstring, or tear an achilles, or stub a toe, or break a tooth eating some pudding. He's over-rated and over-hyped to the extreme.
  23. How many times is Buxton going to be discussed here? Must be a slow day at the office. Sorry but it is really getting old. Rinse and repeat the same articles and here we are again. Why are the writers here so enamored with a part-time player that has done nothing to help this team go to the next level. Even in 2023 he was not a factor in the playoffs and they won 3 games and a series without him. The Twins success does NOT depend on Buxton. It depends on the other 25, 30 or more players who actually play and contribute on a regular basis. Nine years he's put on a major league uniform and we've had a broken Buxton in almost everyone of them. His average stats over those 9 years is a .239 Batting Average, 12 HR's, 33RBI's and 9 Stolen Bases. People here clamor over how he is worth every penny of his $15M contract and the Twins never would have gotten him that cheap had it not been for his injured history. Anyone who tells me a player who has numbers like his average stats, is worth $15M a year, drinks too much Kool-Aid. Please ask him if he'll waive his NO Trade clause in his contract so he becomes another teams problem. Because when you have to have another player to cover for him, that is all he is. A Problem.
