  1. I'm sure Johnson (and his ilk) have put a lot of thought and research in the ways this can be done while still minimizing that risk. But, I think you're right...it can't eliminate that risk. Two weeks before Gonsalves's elbow blew up, or kinda blew up, or whatever it did, Johnson was quoted in a story that he had Gonsalves "on a road to 95" (mph) velo.
  2. I don't. And didn't. At least in terms of being good in the context of the league. So, I'm with you there. Club is only beating one type of team. Bad ones. Non-divisional opponents that are not Baltimore...record 5-9; run differential...62-83. Thing is, in 2019, you can win an AL Central with that. Sometimes punting is the right thing to do...but it's going to be awkward if the FO finds themselves in a position of punting on a division title.
  3. It's a fine line, and we've crossed it. When all the guys in the batting order regardless of athletic/agility/speed profile and position played can reach the fence easily, then everyone develops the same approach and the same swing. And then pile on the analytical case for HR and K's over BA and balls in play. Diversity dies. Don't really have an answer...but don't know why we have to have a juiced ball on top of it. Maybe when a pitcher gets killed by a line drive, we'll think about doing something. Although, I don't know if it's the 'rebound' properties (exit velo) that are contributing as much as the reduced wind resistance. And if you raise the seams to retard carry, guess what the pitchers will do with that...even more K's. No easy answers. Very long term: the league should implement significantly greater dimensional minimums for new parks going forward.
  4. I'll wait for more than 86 PA to declare Buxton has turned the offensive corner. He's OPS'ing 765 now, which would be very ok if he can sustain that. But agree with Howie above, that the leash will not be short for either Buxton or Sano. For now, I just want them both playing extended months of healthy baseball...for their sake, and also for the sake of the club being able to make more informed decisions regarding their future.
  5. Is it just me? In prior years, I don't remember Pineda looking like....he looks.
  6. Listened to the Miracle game. 2 of the 3 hits (both by Lewis) were infield dribblers...two balls were hit well to the outfield. But, it’s early and the Florida State League...so they say. In addition to his double, Rortvedt threw out another would-be base stealer and has now nabbed 8 of 12. And with Lewis barely 50% in the SB department, despite reports of his elite speed, it got me thinking. Does the FSL also have longer basepaths?
  7. The clueless ones...so probably, yes But he had a 3.29 FIP and leading the league in K’s heading into this game. So, not exactly struggling. This is what a number two starter on a championship team looks like.
  8. Gets hit by pitch in first PA...naturally. Apparently not hurt...he remains in game.
  9. Agree with posters that have cited how weak the Twins schedule has been...AND how weak it will continue to be (overall) for the entire season. That's what makes it tricky in terms of how aggressive the FO should be, IMO. In terms of hopes for actually competing in the post season, one win like yesterday's means more than six pummellings of Baltimore or any number of future pummellings of KC or the White Sox. The players will get a chance to state their case in the near future with a better mix of competing teams appearing on the schedule.
  10. The only Wander I'm interested in seeing play right now is Javier. Terribly provincial of me, I know. (But yes, If I was a bit closer to Cedar Rapids it would be interesting to see Franco )
  11. I’d love a report on his fielding so far this year. Is his speed and range still truly elite? Sometimes young athletes lose a step as their body fills out. Notice he’s having poor early results in trying to steal bases this year.
  12. I knew if the Twins were to ever show they can beat a really good team in a tight, low-scoring game, that it would have to be Odorizzi and Adrianza.
  13. Apparently Wes Johnson’s “road to 95” (mph) for Gonsalves had a bit of a pothole. Nevertheless, thanks for including expected returns for all the guys that are out. Severino?
  14. The starting 3rd baseman is out, No? Gonzalez’s bacon will get eaten when Sano is back. When Escobar was here, what did he do when Sano was out? He played 3rd base and Adrianza ‘moved around’. The question of why Astudillo didn’t (at some point) become the regular 3rd baseman is a more relevant question, IMO...and probably has to do with how the club views Astudillo’s defense there and how they view Gonzalez long-term, which probably hasn’t changed much in one month.
  15. Only a quality start because Berrios was facing a AAAA lineup (without Mancini). He had nothing as evidenced by the fact that two struggling relievers...May and Mejia...both had innings that were cleaner than almost every inning Berrios pitched. Still, Berrios is not one to give up easily and the 6 innings were important for the bullpen.
  16. I notice in the Ft Myers box that Lewis was caught stealing and was also picked off. I like the fact that he’s aggressively working on that part of his game. But fwiw, he’s hit a wall there at least temporarily. Now 11 SB with 8 CS at A+. That would project to Jorge Polonco on the bases...and his A numbers were pointing to something more Buxton-ish.
  17. For those of you counting at home...today was Austin’s second start in the OF in the 16 games he’s spent with SF. Although to be fair, he’s only had four starts at 1B. Given the roster make-up (with Cruz), he had zero chance to survive with the Twins from the moment Cron was signed...unless of course he had massively outperformed Cron out of the gate...which he didn’t. Really wish he was getting more play with SF.
  18. Coming up on about 25 or so extra pitches thrown by Barrios based solely on Kepler not attempting to catch two balls that should have been caught...not should have been caught by Buxton...should have been caught by Kepler. Or anyone.
  19. I think the term “league average” sometimes needs more context. Actually, Castro’s been slightly better than league average during his career...and very near league-average even in recent years...if you compare him to other catchers...which is probably the only relevant context. If you also buy that he’s at least average defensively, he’s a player you can win with at the bottom of the lineup. I like that the Twins seem to have better offensive options at the position. It’s a good problem to have.
  20. Can’t find anything. He finished the second inning in the field...then was pinch hit for to lead of the bottom of the inning. The Red Wings were down 16-0 at the time. That’s right...they were down by 16 runs before Rooker had a chance to bat.
  21. Has nothing to do with pull rate...he doesn’t hit the ball hard to the left of center. Rosario does. His career BABiP speaks for itself at this point.
  22. Really interesting. And also not drawing walks...one of the lowest BB rates. It’s been pretty obvious that the approach has been to be aggressive and try to drive the first good pitch you see. There has not been much pretense to ‘work counts’ and/or try to build the pitch count for the opposition.
  23. It’s rare that he hits balls hard too any area of the field other than the right-most third. When he does, it’s an accident...takes the same swing at every pitch and tries to pull everything.
  24. I would think Baltimore fans would be very happy if this year's Orioles were the equivalent of the 1999 Twins team. Appearing on that club...all age 26 or younger... Doug Mientkiewicz, Christian Guzman, Corey Koskie, Torii Hunter, Jacque Jones, A.J. Pierzynski, Brad Radke, Eric Milton, LaTroy Hawkins...(and the guy that couldn't make it, David Ortiz.) Give me 97 losses to watch, watching young players with talent, instead of 80-85 watching guys that will never contribute to a legitimately good team. Every. Time. It's always darkest before the dawn.
  25. The primary unfavorable early results for Lewis are tied to SLG. Last year 5 HR in his 208 PA at Fort Myers. This year, zero so far in 87....and not many x-base hits of any kind. Meanwhile, he’s also striking out at a slightly higher rate than he did during his 2018 Fort Myers stint. He did start slow last year at Cedar Rapids, as well. Not this slow, but slow.
