The Twins biggest need is hitters who can hit and hit with men on. So they trade several players to get 8 pitchers and 5 hitters- 2 of which have major league experience but bat left handed- something they have a surplus of right now. Outman can be ok. Roden hasn't done anything yet. I don't like them giving up both Jax and Duran. One yes but not both. But they can sign relievers in the off season. They aren't as super important IF they are good and IF the team has a lead late. They also can be somewhat fickle- though ours have been consistent. I also don't like them giving up Castro who is very versatile and can hit a bit and steal bases. While next year doesn't look good right now, we still have a good starting pitching staff and can get relievers. Batters are another thing. We have potential but guys like Lee and Julien must pick it up and Wallner needs to hit with men on base. 14 homers with 27 RBI (or whatever he has) indicates it's all or nothing with him. But he's young so we'll see. Is he another Dave Kingman?

The Twins Finally Picked a Lane
twinfan replied to Matthew Taylor's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The entire day was puzzling to me. I figured they would make a few deals and thought they could get more for Duran, Jax (though they should not have traded both), Correa and maybe Castro. Trading Varland was a surprise considering it happened after the others but many here have been dumping on him for 2+ years so I'm surprised they are upset- unless it's because of the amount of control we had. Many of the others weren't in our future anyway so it shouldn't have been a big surprise. So now we have a bunch of new players and several suspects who will probably (mostly except maybe 2-3) never make a significant contribution. But we still have a decent starting rotation, a couple of stars and a few more players who can become good. So we have holes to fill. Let's see who does what over the next 2 months and then what happens over the winter. I'm sure nobody thought we'd win the World Series after finishing last the year before.- 301 replies

Mets, Yankees Inquiring on Outfielder Harrison Bader
twinfan replied to Brock Beauchamp's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
The Yanks need pitching but keep obtaining hitters. Maybe their GM is worse than ours. Correa back to Houston could happen though I like the way he seems to be helping the young hitters. But he costs too much and maybe we can get a couple of good players for him if he's healthy. The Yanks don't want/need him. -
They probably need to trade one or the other but definitely not both. And they should trade for major league talent or AAA talent but not suspects in the low minors. And do not trade Pablo or Ryan. I honestly believe that if we get healthy next year we can contend for the playoffs- even though we stink right now. They are on MLB today but I cringe when I watch the poor offense that never seems to do well when on TV in my area. Also, trading Bader should be a no-brainer but not Castro (IMHO).

Los Angeles Dodgers Interested In Harrison Bader
twinfan replied to Matthew Lenz's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Bader has always been one of the best defensive outfielders in the game. He hits a little, has a little power and can steal bases. He will save up to a run a game when he plays and rarely makes mistakes. However, he is not a regular player and never has been. Unless we are committed to playing him and signing him for a couple more years, trading him makes sense. If the Dodgers want him, they should give us a pitcher that will help us now and next year or two- not some low A suspect. -
Do we have a choice? I agree not to trade Ryan and if you need to, trade either Duran or Jax but not both.

The trouble with baseball and the way starting pitchers are treated these days makes me believe that we may never see a 300 game winner again. How is a pitcher supposed to get better if he doesn't learn how to pitch to a lineup at any time- even the 3rd time through and also learn to get out of tough situations. Yes, some of our pitchers are young but you also have to take it game by game. Had Festa been throwing poorly, I'd have yanked him. Had he been at 85-90 pitches, maybe same thing. But he wasn't and needs the experience to learn. It just didn't exactly work out the way we (and Rocco) would have liked.

Shoot me if you want but don't trade Ryan. If the Cubs will give us those 2 for Jax or Duran, do it yesterday but not Ryan. Just my opinion.

Management has to ask itself where we might have been without the injuries- especially to Pablo. I'd trade Vasquez before Jeffries and Duran before Jax but wouldn't trade both Duran and Jax. Plus I'd rather get major league or AAA players than A league players in trades. And please don't trade Lewis. That would be a big mistake. He's finally finding himself after the injuries.

1- The lack of plate discipline falls directly on the hitting coach. 2- We are not in a pennant race. 3- A .240 average for a limited power infielder is not terrible but his OBP makes it worse. 4- We are not in a pennant race. 5- It's too early to give up on Lee but, without consistent reps, it will be tough for him to develop further. 6- We are not in a pennant race (let's get this off our minds that we are). So let's see what we have after the trade deadline.

Heyman Reports The Mets Are Checking In On Danny Coulombe
twinfan replied to Brock Beauchamp's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
If the Mets want Columbe, they will need to give us Acuna. He is an up and coming talent who has experience at the major league level. That's my opinion and I'm sticking to it. -
Dodgers Calling On Jhoan Duran And Griffin Jax
twinfan replied to Brock Beauchamp's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Forget the Dodgers. They are too rich. Look to the Cubs who have a great minor league system if you want players ready for the show.- 52 replies

Put Lewis at first or maybe Wallner and keep Lewis at third. It would be nice to get a Suarez if he can be signed (or is signed) beyond next year. If the Dodgers want either Jax or Duran, will they give us 2 good players? The Cubs might have the best talent major league ready and might be better to deal with. We play the Dodgers this week so let's see what happens. I would not trade both but maybe one will go. Guys like Clemons are still young and he has shown power and clutch hitting. Bader is expendable if we can get someone good for him. This year is shot but don't sell off the team. A healthy pitching staff can get us closer but would give us a good chance next year. And what the heck is WAR and how is it even calculated and is fWAR fu--ingWAR? Stupid stats IMHO. Of course the best hitters are going to have the highest WAR most of the time.

Looking Back: Top Prospects Moved at the 2024 Trade Deadline
twinfan commented on jorgenswest's blog entry in Blog jorgenswest
Prospects are always suspects. Teams that sell are best selling players in the final years of their contracts and should try to get AAA players or those in the majors. Some work out but I've always said that 10% of high school players make it on their college teams and 10% of those make it to become professionals. After that it's about 20% who ever get to the show for at least a cup of coffee and their names in the record books as having played in a major league game. -
Tony was actually Pedro. He stole his brother's identity to get out of Cuba and appear younger to scouts and aren't we glad he did. Happy Birthday Tony....er Pedro. He retired with an average over .300. Today only about 5 ballplayers are even batting .300 for the season. Shades of Pete Runnels (if you remember him).

Ah, Les Straker. That's who Woods-Richardson reminds me of. I remember the emory board incident. It was hysterical. He was on the mound being checked with his glove and hat (Gaylord always supposedly hid grease in his hat/hair/back of neck) and he reached into his back pocket and took his hand out in a "who me?" type of body language and the board fell out. It looked like he then said "what's that?". All we could do was laugh. Pitchers back then would do anything to get an edge. Joe did ok with us at the end of his career.

Everything is wishful thinking. If the Twins pitchers get healthy, do they need to trade any of them? and to whom? And for what? If we could make the playoffs with a healthy pitching staff, we could make some noise but that's a big if. Is our offense good enough to get there? We couldn't beat a 1-8 pitcher yesterday and that doesn't bode well. I think if we don't win 5 of the next 7 games, we'll sell off for next year. If we do win, we might make 1 major (maybe Jax and/or Castro) and 1 minor deal. I think our best possible deal could come with the Cubs who have lots of prospects nearly ready.

I believe that the Cubs need bullpen help and would like either Duran or Jax so they had better give us more than just Long. Maybe a minor league starter or two. Colombe is possible but not high on a list. I agree with moving Larnach or maybe Wallner to first but keep Lewis at third.

While I like Hayes, I would rather have Lewis or maybe both with Lewis at first or DH. I was never very high on Lewis but he did burst on the scene. I have no clue what has happened to him since last July unless he had gotten homer happy. I don't see Correa staying with us much longer if he has an opt out clause. I don't see dealing Ryan but could see trading Jax and/or Duran if we can get a good return. I think the Twins need to build for the next few years via deals/signings that won't deplete the young potential. Selling off to get guys in the final year of their contract just to make the playoffs would be a mistake for this current team. Guys like Wallner are touted as future stars and may just need reps to build more experience. But we may also need a good hitting coach to guide them through.

Hey. Even Mickey Mantle bunted several times in his career for base hits. It added dimension to his being a great ballplayer. I firmly believe that the home run derby can do more harm to a player than good. Bux is approaching greatness but doesn't need to be considered a home run hitter to get there. If he can stay healthy, bat over .280, add 30-35 homers and steals, and hit over .300 with men in scoring position, that's fine for me. I just hope his participation doesn't kill some of his swing. But then nowadays, everyone is swinging for the fences. I'd rather see Wallner (more raw power) in the derby but that won't happen right now.

Simeon Woods Richardson Has A New Pitch
twinfan replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
#5, #4,#3. Who cares? Those numbers only mean anything in the post-season (IMHO). While I'm not high on SWR, it's nice to see him adjusting at this time. Baseball is a game of always adjusting throughout most player's careers. Pitchers must adjust from game to game, within a game and, sometimes, from season to season. Hitters too. A good pitching coach and communication with fellow pitchers helps this. I hope he can continue to develop so we'll see. -
Did We Crown the Twins' Pitching Pipeline Too Soon?
twinfan replied to Matthew Taylor's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
A team can build a pitching staff by the draft and through trades or the waiver wire (which rarely works). It doesn't matter how you do it as long as it gets done. I am more concerned about the number of arm injuries and fatigue that our pitchers have had. That can cause your staff to go into the toilet. I also agree that, for some reason, we don't have pitchers who could dominate a game. The Skeins, Mosokowskis (though he's only had 2 starts) and Skubals are rarities but many teams have at least 2 starters who can consistently give you solid outings. I won't give up on our youngsters yet but so far they have not been consistent. Our best pitcher right now is Ryan but his history is not good in the second halves of seasons so we'll see. We should be sellers since we aren't going anywhere right now but don't sell the entire furniture. Hopefully we can get some good deals done...but not for Duran or Wallner.- 30 replies
